Development of Strategic Fundraising Practices for Divisions of Student Affairs at 4-year Public Flagship Institutions

Today public higher education leaders are charged with finding private gifts to support their campus operations as state appropriations decline. Accordingly, budget cuts are often a challenge for units within institutions that support the co-curricular experience. This applied dissertation was designed to identify fundraising strategies that supplement operating budgets for student affairs divisions at four-year public institutions that are members the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Big Ten. The researcher surveyed development officers that were charged with fundraising for student affairs these institutions, as well other public institutions with an NCAA affiliation. An analysis of the data using Light’s (2005) four pillars of high performance revealed strategies that student affairs have used to be successful. For instance, student affairs divisions that raised the most money were included in the institutions capital campaign and had a dedicated fundraiser for their division. In addition, they collaborated with other development colleagues to ensure priorities under the purview of student affairs were clearly articulated. Put simply, student affairs divisions can be successful in raising philanthropic dollars to support programs and services within their unit.

Giving and Red Cloud Indian School : fiscal years 2007-2011

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This dissertation focuses on the philanthropic partnerships at Red Cloud Indian School, a private-public religious partnership that educates approximately 600 Lakota students on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, during the worst recession since the Great Depression – 2007 through 2011. Research finds that during this time contributions fell for Native American organizations, educational and religious organizations. Despite these realities, contributions to Red Cloud Indian School increased. Red Cloud Indian School attempted numerous fundraising approaches dating back to the late 1880s with the support from Sister Katherine Drexel. Throughout the decades Red Cloud Indian School relied on contributions from networks, including friends of the Society of Jesus, the Black and Indian Mission, and a national direct mail program. These fundraising efforts fluctuated significantly since the mid-century and plateau in the early 2000s forcing a board directed change to raise additional financial support. This dissertation examines the research question: “In what ways do high net worth individual supporters understand their relationship to Red Cloud Indian School from Fiscal Years 2007 through 2011 which led to an increase in financial support of fortyfour percent (44%) over the five-year period.” This study provides an example of donor relationships with an organization, in particular engaging donors who support educational organizations for indigenous populations. Understanding the donors’ perceptions, desires, and motivations for directing their philanthropic activity specific to Red Cloud will complement the quantitative research that has been completed regarding high net worth donors. This study uses an emergent qualitative design, which allows the study to evolve and be as malleable as possible in order to follow the interviewees and explore information uncovered.

Empathy and its implications for prosocial behavior and engagement with the arts

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This dissertation contains three essays examining empathy and its implications for prosocial behavior and arts engagement. Empathy here refers to both compassion and concern for others (emotional empathy) and the understanding of the feelings and needs of others (cognitive empathy). Empathy is fundamental to our social life, and this dissertation explores its implications for two essential components of social life: prosocial behavior and arts engagement. Chapter 2 examines how three dimensions of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI; Davis, 1983)—empathic concern, perspective taking, and personal distress—are associated with charitable giving, and whether these associations vary across charitable causes. Using data from a nationally representative sample of American adults, the study confirms that the three IRI dimensions are associated with charitable giving in different ways. Chapter 3 focuses on the interplay of trait empathy and people’s tendencies to diversify (spread out) their prosocial behavior. By analyzing data from two samples of American adults, this study reveals that people with higher empathic concern (emotional empathy) versus higher perspective taking (cognitive empathy) have distinct patterns in how they spread out their monetary gifts, but trait empathy is not associated with the distribution of time spent in helping others.

This report details an internship with the Louisiana Children’s Museum’s development office, which started in February 2014; transitioned from internship to employment in May 2014; and concluded in June 2014 after the Museum’s fundraising event, Circus Magic Night. In this paper, I will provide an overview of the Museum’s history, programs, and organizational structure, as well as describe my internship experience and contributions over a period of five months and 480 hours. Additionally, I will analyze LCM’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; discuss relevant best practices; and finally, offer recommendations that propose solutions to some of the challenges I observed as the development/special events intern and as the new special events coordinator.

Cette recherche traite de l'engagement en faveur de l'intérêt général, et notamment des modalités d'engagement des organisations mécènes auprès des organisations d'intérêt général, aujourd'hui, en France.Ce travail s'inscrit dans le cadre général des théories de l'action et plus particulièrement dans le courant représenté par les travaux de Boltanski et Thévenot sur la justification et l'engagement (Boltanski et Thévenot 1991, Thévenot, 2005), qui s'intéressent à comment les gens justifient leurs actions et à ce qu'ils disent de « pourquoi ils s'engagent ». Les études anthropologiques, sociologiques et socio-économiques sur les significations du don et sur les pratiques de mécénat, aujourd'hui, en France, nous ont fourni le socle de notre analyse.A partir de ces cadres de références, nous proposons un modèle qui rend compte des actions empiriques des professionnels de la collecte de fonds (les « fundraisers ») et des mécènes lorsqu'ils construisent un accord mécène.Ce modèle met en évidence les dispositifs et les objets dans lesquels s'enracine l'engagement des organisations mécènes. Il éclaire sur ce qu'est une action juste et légitime en faveur de l'intérêt général. Il propose un mécanisme permettant d'expliquer comment ces actions sont jugées par les parties prenantes des organisations impliquées dans un accord mécène.Nos recherches ont deux applications concrètes :1. Mettre en évidence les leviers actionnables par les organisations d'intérêt général pour collecter des fonds auprès des organisations mécènes.2. Enrichir la compréhension de l'engagement des entreprises en faveur de l'intérêt général. This sociological approach of “action” tries to explain how people justify their actions and what they say about why they engage.From these frames of reference, we propose a model that reflects the empirical practices of professionals in fundraising and organisations involved in building an agreement around philanthropy.This model highlights the devices and equipment being used to build the agreement. It illuminates on what is a “fair and legitimate” action for the general interest. It offer a mechanism to explain how these actions are judged by the stakeholders of organizations involved in a patronage.Our research has two applications in management:1. Identify actions for non-profit organisations to raise funds from organizations who wish to involve in public good.2. Understand of business engagement for the public good. Highlight good practices and benefits that companies can expect of their commitmentOur work brings a specific contribution to understanding the creation of value in a strategic marketing approach of corporate social responsibility, and the development of corporate social capital of public and private organizations acting for the benefit of general interest.

This master thesis analyses the role of running charity fundraising and its impact on non-profit organizations. It discovers the impact of various non-profit marketing and fundraising methods to address the donors, both current and prospective. First part of the thesis is focusing on explanation of key terms and concepts of non-profit organizations. It also describes what the position of marketing in the nonprofit sector is and how the fundraising is done. Author then identified the main fundraising methods in which non-profit organizations use running to make an impact. All identified types are supported by the real life examples. An intensive mapping of running oriented charity events in the Czech Republic and its deep analysis has helped author to identify what are the key success factors to be used when designing a new fundraising or marketing plan linked to running initiatives for Světlo pro svět NPO.

The aim of this work is the processing and evaluation of information gained from the questionnaire survey, which took place within the University research. The work is focused on factors that influence the success of NGOs in particular in the areas of activities of organizations and their financing. NGOs are first grouped according to age, geographical scope and legal status. It is also being considered with a vision and mission of their short-term and long-term goals. Another chapter examines the importance of volunteers and their application in different areas of operation. Here is an analysis of the internal control situation, the quality of services and use of information systems. The last task is focused on the allocation of financial resources and evaluation of NGO work with the financial plans.
