Optimization of the polishing procedure using a robot assisted polishing equipment

<p>Today, manual polishing is the most common method to improve the surface finish of mould and dies for e.g. plastic injection moulding, although it is a cumbersome and time-consuming process. Therefore, automated robots are being developed in order to speed up and secure the final result of this important final process.</p><p>The purpose of this thesis is to find out some clues about the influence of different parameters for the polishing of a steel grade called Mirrax ESR (Uddeholm Tooling AB) using a Design of Experiment. The report starts with a brief description of mechanical polishing (the techniques and polishing mechanisms) and ends up with the optimization of the polishing procedure with a polishing machine, the Strecon RAP-200 made by Strecon A/S.</p><p>Even if all the runs of the Design of Experiments couldn’t be carried out, the surfaces studied revealed some information about the importance of the previous process (turning marks not removed) and about the link between the aspect of the surfaces and the roughness parameters.</p>

Black Gloss Ceramics From Cerveteri: The Vigna Marini Project 2012

The purpose of this thesis is threefold: to catalogue the black gloss ceramics excavated by the Vigna Marini project in Cerveteri in 2012; to understand the relationship between Rome and Caere in terms of ceramic production, especially in the third century BCE; and to highlight the importance of archaeometric analysis in ceramic studies. Using a firmly established typology of black gloss ceramics, a qualitative analysis of the ceramics of this type recovered in Cerveteri, and archaeometric studies, I show that black gloss production remained relatively stable in Caere during Rome’s expansion into Italy. English to ASL Gloss Machine Translation

Low-resource languages, including sign languages, are a challenge for machine translation research. Given the lack of parallel corpora, current researchers must be content with a small parallel corpus in a narrow domain for training a system. For this thesis, we obtained a small parallel corpus of English text and American Sign Language gloss from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We cleaned the corpus by loading it into an open-source translation memory tool, where we removed computer markup language and split the large chunks of text into sentences and phrases, creating a total of 14,247 sentence pairs. We randomly partitioned the corpus into three sections: 70% for a training set, 10% for a development set, and 20% for a test set. After downloading and installing the open-source Moses toolkit, we went through several iterations of training, translating, and evaluating the system. The final evaluation on unseen data yielded a state-of-the-art score for a low-resource language.

Magnetic resonance microscopy of alkyd polymers and emulsions

Alkyd emulsions are currently being developed for coating applications. These paints combine the technical advantages of alkyd polymers, which give coatings of a high gloss finish, with the environmental and health benefits of solvent-free systems. Nonetheless, the drying and film formation of these systems involve several steps, none of which is well understood yet. These include creaming or sedimentation, evaporation of the continuous water phase, coalescence of the alkyd droplets, a possible phase-inversion, and the oxidative cross-linking of the alkyd polymer to form a hard coating. In this thesis. Magnetic Resonance Microscopy is used to investigate the film formation of alkyd emulsion coatings. As the process is complex, studies on a different range of emulsions and related systems are performed to gain further insight into the different steps involved. A combination of Liquid State Microscopy, diffusometry and broad line imaging (Stray Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is employed, and it is shown that this combination provides results extremely rich in information. First, a study of the cream layer and the creaming dynamics of model bulk oil-in-water emulsions containing different concentrations of thickener is presented. The experimental data are compared to the predictions of a numerical model, and evidence is gained that the presence of the thickener induces flocculation according to a depletion mechanism. Then, the water evaporation from alkyd emulsion droplets is investigated and the water concentration across the droplet is modelled according to an original model based on lateral diffusion of water. There is no evidence from spectroscopy and diffusometry for phase-inversion during the drying of alkyd emulsion coatings. Finally the cross-linking of alkyds containing driers is found to be non-uniform across the film thickness.

Low coherence interferometry and optical coherence tomography in paper measurements

Abstract This thesis describes the application of Low Coherence Interferometry (LCI) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in paper measurements. The developed measurement system is a combination of a profilometer and a tomographic imaging device, which makes the construction versatile and applicable in several paper measurement applications. The developed system was first used to measure the surface structure of paper. Different grades of paper were selected to provide maximum variation in surface structure. The results show that the developed system is capable of measuring grades of paper from rough base paper to highly coated photo printing paper. To evaluate the developed system in surface characterization, the roughness parameters of five laboratory-made paper samples measured with the developed system and with a commercial optical profilometer were compared. A linear correlation was found with roughness parameters Ra and Rq. Next, the surface quality of paper was evaluated using LCI, a Diffractive Optical Element Based Glossmeter (DOG), and a commercial glossmeter. The results show linear correlation between Ra and gloss measured with the commercial glossmeter. The roughness Ra and averaged gloss measured with the DOG didn't give such a correlation, but a combination of these techniques provided local properties of gloss and surface structure, which can be used to evaluate the local surface properties of paper. In the next study, determination of the filler content of paper using OCT is discussed. The measurement results show clear correspondence of the slope of the averaged logarithmic fringe signal envelope and the filler content. The last studies focus on 2D and 3D imaging of paper using OCT and begin with imaging of a self-made wood fiber network. The visibility of the fibers was clear. Next, several refractive index matcing agents are studied by means of light transmittance and OCT measurements to find the best possible agent for enhancing the imaging depth of OCT in paper. Benzyl alcohol was found to have the best possible combination of optical, evaporation, and sorption characteristics, and it is applied in 2D and 3D visualizations of copy paper.
