This study addresses the demography and its impact on the economy. The reduction of fertility and mortality, followed by an increase in life expectancy of the population, has resulted in a decline in population growth and changes in the age structure of the population. This phenomenon also affects the so-called demographic transition process in which there is a reduction in the proportion of children and an increase in the proportion of aged people in the population. Literature assumes that this process is related to economic growth, so that regions with lower dependency ratio (proportion of children and aged people in the population) should have higher economic growth. Using techniques of exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) for Minimum Comparable Areas (MCA) and of econometrics for panel data, it has been proved the inverse relationship between the rate of dependency and economic growth with both techniques for Brazil. The dependency ratio indicated that the child component predominates in Brazil and that the more developed regions of Brazil in terms of demographic change are the South and Southeast. Both rates of child and aged dependency influenced negatively the model of Brazilian economic growth, helping to reduce the dubiousness of the last rate by using econometric method that corrects for the endogeneity problem - Gmm- System. It was also investigated the influence of demography on consumption using data of the Household Budget Survey (HBS) base year 2002-2003 for Rio Grande do Sul indicating that sectors of machinery and tractors, electrical and electronic equipment, transport equipment, other industries, financial institutions, services to families and business, property rental, government and private non-market services, have a positive effect from aging on consumption, what we could call an “unlike retirement consumption puzzle”. Moreover, the complete consumption indicated to be stable, which seem to make sense, since there are also areas which consumption decreases with age. With that, the importance of demographics in both economic growth and the consumption for Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul, respectively, has been evidenced.

The huge amount of multimedia content accumulated daily has demanded the development of effective retrieval approaches. In this context, speaker recognition tools capable of automatically identifying a person through their voice are of great relevance. This work presents a novel speaker recognition approach modelled as a retrieval scenario and using recent unsupervised learning methods. The proposed approach considers Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) and Perceptual Linear Prediction Coefficients (PLPs) as features along with multiple modelling approaches, namely Vector Quantization, Gaussian Mixture Models and i-vector to compute distances among audio objects. Next, rank-based unsupervised learning methods are used for improving the effectiveness of retrieval results and, based on a K-Nearest Neighbors classifier, an identity decision is taken. Several experiments were conducted considering three public datasets from different scenarios, carrying noise from various sources. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve very high effectiveness results. In addition, effectiveness gains up to +318% were obtained by the unsupervised learning procedure in a speaker retrieval task. Also, accuracy gains up to +7,05% were obtained by the unsupervised learning procedure in a speaker identification task considering recordings from different domains. / FAPESP: 2015/07934-4

Rozpoznávání emoční stavů na základě řečového záznamu / Emotional States of Humans and their Determination using Speech Record AnalysisLněnička, Jakub January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the diploma project is to find a method through which it will be possibleto classify the selected emotion from speech. At the beginning of the work deals with the description of the human body and their voice-generating operation. Furthermore, the text deals with the problem of the human voice into digital form.Great attention is paid to the parameters of the speech signal with an emphasis on describing the symptoms to help the selected emotion. The work deals with therecognition of emotions and a description of some of them. The main part is finding the best methods to reduce symptoms of segmental and suprasegmental speech utterances. The results of success was achieved by comparing the classification of selected emotions when using multiple methods and compare their results. The most important criterion in assessing the results ofthe reduction parameters of the speech signal, based on previous research in this area.

Rizika pro finanční stabilitu v prostředí nízkých úrokových sazeb a vliv na trh nemovitostí: studie regionu Střední Evropy / Risks to Financial Stability in the Low Interest Rate Environment and its Housing Market Implications: CE Region StudyMeti, Elvira January 2020 (has links)
iv Abstract The current state of the prolonged low interest rate environment may pose a great threat to the soundness of the financial system both in the eurozone countries as well as in the neighboring regions, such as in countries of Central Europe due to high interconnectedness of markets. Some of the recently identified risks of the low interest rate environment are a notable pickup in mortgage lending and house prices, and deterioration of profitability among banks. We study these channels for the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, investigating the impact of the imported ECB monetary policy on local (hos countries) during 2004Q4-2019Q4. Our findings suggest that house prices are further driven by low interest rates, and the effect is lagged by two quarters as looser monetary conditions need time to impact our dependant variables. Furthermore, a decrease in the mortgage rate increases mortgage lending in these countries. Lastly, in our study of 27 banks during 2004-2015, we find that ROAA declines by approximately by 17.8 %, given a one percent increase in the 3-month EURIBOR. Bankovní poplatky - jejich determinanty a vliv na ziskovost a rizikovost bank / Bank fee and commission income - its determinants and impact on bank's profitability and riskVozková, Karolína January 2020 (has links)
This thesis consists of five essays dealing with the fee and commission income in European banks from the macro, sector and bank level perspectives. This topic is of high relevance since fee income represents the largest part of the non-interest income of EU banks. The first part of the thesis deals with banks in general terms, while the second part is focused solely on cooperative banks, which represent approximately 20% of the EU banking sector. We compare the magnitude of the bank fee income across EU countries and study its determinants and impacts on banks' performance. The first essay compares the magnitude of the fee income across EU countries with a special emphasis on the Czech Republic from a macroeconomic perspective. First, we conclude that Czech banks are not abnormally dependent on fee income and their outstanding performance can be attributed to sound risk management, high liquidity and sufficient capital buffers rather than to excessive fees. Second, our evidence suggests that the share of fee income had an increasing trend in EU countries in recent years, which might be connected to the effort to maintain sufficient profitability in the low interest rates environment. We also discuss how new entrants, the so called low-cost banks, changed the banking sector in the Czech Republic....

The Role of Financial Inclusion in Economic Growth : A quantitative study about financial inclusion & economic growths relationshipPettersson, Viktor, Stjernberg, Noah January 2022 (has links)
This study examines the relationship between financial inclusion and economic growth, more specifically if financial inclusion is an important factor for economic growth. A sub question was stated as well, if the six proxies of the financial inclusion measurement respectively have an impact on economic growth. To help examine this research area we have compiled panel data from 20 countries with different income levels over a time period of 19 years. The time period on which this study is focusing is 2002-2020. The tests conducted in this study are the Dickey-Fuller unit root test and the Arellano-Bond dynamic panel GMM method. Given the result of the dynamic panel estimation, we found that financial inclusion has a positive relation to economic growth. The result also indicated that three of the six proxies for financial inclusion were statistically significant and have a positive relation to economic growth. To conclude, the study found empirical evidence that financial inclusion is an important factor for economic growth.

Deposit-borrowing substitutability: evidence from microfinance institutions around the worldShettima, U., Dzolkarnaini, Nazam 13 April 2023 (has links)
Yes / Drawing from 645 microfinance institutions across 56 countries, this paper examines the deposit-borrowing dynamic of microfinance institutions’ source of capital. We find that deposits and borrowings are substitutes rather than complements. We further find that the degree of substitutability is more pronounced among microfinance institutions operating in a developed financial sector where the level of information asymmetry is lower. Our findings represent novel contribution in understanding microfinance institutions’ funding behaviour that supports its quest for further growth and long-term sustainability. / Research Development Fund Publication Prize Award winner, April 2023.
