Hawthorne's Use of Symbolism in Four Romances

Goldsmith, Oma Kathryn 09 1900 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the four long romances, The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, and The Marble Faun, with emphasis upon Hawthorne's use of symbolism as a means of presenting the basic moral and spiritual truths of human life. The first chapter explains the nature of symbolism and the reasons why Hawthorne used it so extensively. In each of the last four chapters, the symbolism in a single romance is considered for the purpose of discovering the manner and effectiveness of its use in exemplifying the central theme of that particular story. Although Hawthorne's short stories are extremely rich in symbolism, it was not possible to include them in the present study.

A study of the employment of thirty four epileptic male veterans treated at Veterans Administration Hospital, Coral Gables, Florida

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this study was to determine whether the educational levels attained by epileptic male veterans at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Coral Gables, Florida had a bearing on their employment as revealed by the analysis of nine selected items of information. The sample comprised thirty-four epileptic male veterans dichotomized by their educational level--an eleventh grade education or less, more than an eleventh grade education--who were treated as patients within a four month period"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "June, 1960." / "Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Social Work." / Advisor: John T. A comparative analysis of the backgrounds of 50 patients referred to social work service because of discharge problems and 50 patients not referred to social work service, Veterans Administration Hospital, Coral Gables, Florida

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this study was to identify some of the distinguishing characteristics in the backgrounds of patients who presented problems in connection with their hospital discharge (and were thus referred to Social Work Service for discharge planning) from those who did not present such problems. At the Veterans Administration Hospital, Coral Gables, Florida, the economic, social and military factors of 50 patients referred to Social Work Service were compared with those of 50 patients who left the hospital without needing help with discharge planning. Records were kept concerning the number and type of interviews which the social worker had with the fifty patients and/or their family members in order to effect their discharge. The diagnoses and length of stay of these 100 patients were tabulated for the purpose of comparison also. It is hoped that this information will be of value in the future in improving discharge planning techniques, in reducing length of hospital stay for greater utilization of beds, and in obtaining the ultimate in rehabilitation for such patients"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "June, 1961." / "Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Social Work." / Advisor: Dorothy D. Hayes, Professor Directing Study. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 58-62).

Living in an unidyllic Idyll : the worlds of Anne and Heidi : a comparison between Johanna Spyri's Heidi and L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables

Bauer, Ingrid C. January 2002 (has links)
The primary objective of this M.A. Thesis is to provide an in-depth comparison of Heidi and Anne of Green Gables by: (1) revealing through a literary and social analysis, the more somber aspects of these novels. (2) examining the multi-dimensionality of the characters found therein and (3) investigating the possible reasons for the mythical and legendary proportions of these tales. In doing so, I hope to clarify the misconception that these novels, as children's books, are based solely on idealistic and light-hearted themes. Further, I would like to answer, in part, why these two orphan tales have remained so universally popular for so long, whereas other similar books have not. But most of all, I hope to prove that children's literature has significant literary merit, worthy of academic interest and investigation.

The present research aimed to evaluate the importance of the gables in the urban landscapes of the historic centers of Salvador and Porto. The selection of the cities of Salvador and Porto aimed to find similarities or differences between the two urban settlements. The gables surveyed are present, predominantly, in the boundary between adjoining buildings representative of the civil architecture of the two urban contexts. It was researched factors that contributed to their visibility, and in what way that gables collaborate to the relationship that is established between the urban spaces and in who interacts with them. The methodology was established by documental surveys, developed through the analysis of old documents, such as notices and postures, scientific literature on the subject, as well as through the analysis of iconographic sources, such as engravings, maps and old photographs, and field visits at the areas of the objects of study for direct observation and photographic registrations. The survey results showed several similarities between the two urban places, fruit of their geographic characteristics and the influence of the same urban tradition of making city, such as the adaptability of the streets and the blocks with the topography and the inconstancy of the buildings height, factors that are considered important to the visibility of the gables. The gables, in function of their exposure, reveal in their building coatings an approach between the two contexts, in particular on the use of certain materials and constructive techniques. In some examples, the formal standards set by their shapes and textures, reinforced by their visibility established with the public spaces and the observer, showed the role of the gables in the image of both cities. Finally, according to their visual and formal properties, it was presented a proposal of categorization of gables, in order to understand their significance and their relationship with the urban landscapes of Salvador and Porto.

The Angel in the House: Performing to Gender Expectations with Anne Shirley and Hermione Granger / Husets ängel: Hur Anne Shirley och Hermione Granger uppför sina könsroller

Wagner, Emma January 2023 (has links)
This essay explores how adolescent girls in two pieces of children’s fiction are portrayed in children’s literature from the start and end of the 20th century to examine how they perform their gender in relation to expectations as informed by the Angel in the House discourse. Anne of Green Gables and the Harry Potter series were published at the start and end of the twentieth century, and both texts engage with the discourse. Using Judith Butler’s theory of Gender Performativity, this essay demonstrates that the Angel in the House discourse continues to influence expectations of how adolescent girls should behave, particularly with regards to being responsible for upholding the moral code to ensure the social standing of their family. However, they differ in regard to other aspects of the discourse, indicating that parts of the discourse appear to have lessened over the course of the 20th century.

Ancient Superstitions Steeped in the Human Heart: Rumors of the Supernatural as Resistance Narrative in <em>The House of the Seven Gables</em>

Horne, Marie E. 20 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables continuously plays with the idea of narrative authority to explore concepts of class and power within the novel. Since these concepts of class and power are also a central focus of Subaltern Studies, applying some of this body of scholarship to the novel brings into focus these concepts and sheds light on the motivations and types of resistance in the novel. The upper class characters, including the Pyncheons, construct and maintain a narrative based on the declarations of professionals and officials of the state and church. It discusses only the most noble characteristics and events of the upper classes and relies solely on rational, empirical thought. They create this narrative to maintain their authority and dominance. The lower classes, including the Maules, construct an alternate narrative to resist the upper class that is collected and passed down through rumor. Supernatural elements like ghosts and curses figure prominently in this narrative. It is only when the Pyncheon and Maule families begin to listen to and validate multiple narratives that class and power become less important and the reconciliation between families happens.
