Gizmology

I find a similarity between my work and the absurd character of many of the unrealized inventions of earlier times. An example of the latter is the Saluting Device, whch allowed a gentleman to tip his hat without having to use his hand. These machines were never produced for popular use precisely because of their absurdity. Unlike these inventions, however, my sculptures are not created to perform any useful function. I intend them to be viewed as satirical, comical, and fictitious oddities through which I work to convey ideas and feelings about the dilemmas of modem society. Like a machine, our society needs careful maintenance and fuel to function smoothly, but it is, I believe, running out of energy and beginning to break down. I build my obsessive-compulsive objects to resemble household appliances and toys. Ths is an attempt to establish a comfort level for the viewer. Contemplation of ,these machnes will, I hope, spark the viewer's curiosity and stimulate their imagnation to propel and enable the objects to perform their intended satirical purpose. My creative process starts with intuitive pencil sketches that resemble crude technical drawings. The drawings suggest machnes that might perform some imagnary function. I determine the function and then fkther refine the drawing. The final drawing becomes a reference point and sometimes a template for the building process. For further interpretation and intricacy, I allow for deviation from the drawing as I build. The buildmg process begms with an interior frame which is similar to house construction, except that I use clay slabs instead of framing boards. After the skeleton is complete, I enclose the structure and make any parts that must be added or assembled after firing. I use whatever type of builQng procedure necessary to complete the object; this may include coil building, wheel throwing, extruding shapes, and surface carving. Through these odd, imagnative gizmos and gadgets, I offer social commentary. I have chosen satire and humor to engage the viewer in various ways of looking at the modem world. This is an attempt to provoke joyful imagination and intrigue through the intricacy of the pieces. I also suggest my view of the current human condition through the precariousness of the various elements in these sculptures. Finally, my work is an attempt to provide another context from whch to view and respond to our place and time in history.

O recolhimento dos meninos: por uma genealogia da ordem pedagógica brasileira. / The retirement the boys: for a genealogy of the brazilian pedagogical order.

É preciso ganhar e recolher os filhos dos gentios, diz uma máxima jesuítica. Isso resultou numa multiplicidade de práticas educativas, gerando uma ordem pedagógica aplicável aos meninos tupinambás no Brasil-Colônia. Visamos, então, saber que elementos compõem essa ordem pedagógica quinhentista, pois tal ordem foi o tipo de discurso aplicado aos meninos indígenas durante sua educação. Como os jesuítas já recolhiam estudantes antes de vir para o Brasil, resolvemos panoramicamente saber como isso se dava. Denominaremos recolhimento dos meninos o dispositivo que materializou a prática educativa, própria do Ocidente. Tal dispositivo, retira esta tese do passado e a lança como problematizadora do presente, pois recolher e entregar são mais do que simples palavras, são discursos que ajudaram a construir, nesse caso, uma certa ordem pedagógica. Sobre isso, Foucault nos orienta. Afinal, por que razão, em meio a tantos descasos, entregamos e recolhemos as crianças às escolas? Sem meta explícita, esta tese acabou por questionar a noção de recolhimento como a primeira etapa da educação no Brasil. Porém, num exame mais apurado, descobrimos que o recolhimento é muito mais um dispositivo, uma prática, do que uma instituição em si. Se a escolarização brasileira só vai ganhar força no século XX, parece-nos, que o recolhimento foi uma prática que cotejou os primeiros anos desse século, fazendo, por exemplo, professores irem até as fazendas levantar o censo dos meninos para abrir escolas públicas. O recolhimento é a base discursiva da ordem pedagógica que atravessou a colônia brasileira e, quiçá, mesmo abandonado nos dias de hoje, ainda é utilizado pelos profissionais da área de educação, servindo, inclusive, como justificativa para barganhar as verbas públicas. / Its necessary to gain and retire the heathens sons: its a Jesuit axiom. That resulted in a great number of educational practices, conceiving a pedagogical order, applicable to the Tupinambas boys of Brazil-Colony. Then, we have aimed at knowing which elements made up this pedagogical order in the sixteenth century, for such an order was the kind of speech applied to the indigenous boys throughout the course of their education. Jesuits had already retired students before coming to Brazil, therefore we have decided to know it happened, why this became a western educational practice, removing this thesis from the past and throwing it to the present, because to retire and to give are move than simple words: they are speeches that have helped to set a pedagogical order up. On this we have Foucault guidance. After all, why we give and retire children to the schools? Without an explicit goal, this thesis has come to question the notion of retiring as the first stage of the education in Brazil. Yet, through a more refined analysis, we have found out that retiring is much more a device, a practice, than an institution. Insofar as Brazilian schooling will get strength during the twentieth century, we think that retiring made teachers go to farms to count boys in order to open public schools. Nowadays, retiring and guarding is still of use by the educations staff and may justify the bargain for public budget.

This master thesis is engaged in analyzing working desktop accessible from internet by web browser. It describes technologies required for building web interfaces such as DOM, document event model and AJAX. This master thesis contains also design of working desktop prototype. The desktop is implemented as web application based on client-server architecture. The client part of application represents web interface for managing document links placed on desktop. The desktop content is classified by panels and tabs. User can change link arrangement using drag & drop. Server part of application guarantees persistence of desktop configuration and making link offer. Working desktop prototype is implemented by Javascript library Dojo.

The Master’s thesis explains API and features of Google Wave technology, which was designed for flexible real-time collaboration of defined participants. The project aim was description of Google Wave basic elements and creation of sample Wave extensions, demonstrating capabilities of the communication protocol. The first extension (robot) was developed using client libraries in Java. The second extension (gadget) shows another approach of Google Wave extensions, based on XML, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

The Influence of e-WOM through SNS on Brand Perception and Consumer Purchase Intention: Study on Bangladeshi consumers.

Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate the influence e-WOM through social network sites has on consumers focusing on brand perception and purchase intention.  Methodology: A qualitative study was applied with the semi-structured online interview conducted with nine respondents across Bangladesh. The collected primary data were transcribed and thematically analyzed with the reviewed literature.  Findings and Conclusion: We conclude that e-WOM through SNS helps consumers to select smartphones and gadgets. Due to paid reviews and negative influencers, trustworthiness is vital on SNS reviews. Also, the recommendation from known sources or personal research increases brand perception. Rather than relying on single reviews on SNS, it is highly recommended to justify the reviews for purchase intention of smartphones or gadgets. Contribution of the Thesis: This study suggests that e-WOM through SNS influences consumers' purchase of smartphones or gadget brands. It is recommended for the managers to determine reviewers on SNS regarding smartphone or gadget brands. Besides, this study exposes the importance of trustworthiness in SNS reviews.  Suggestion for the Future Research: We suggest future research on a similar topic using a larger sample size. We also propose a comparative study with two or more countries on similar products to determine differences and results relatively. Besides, this study only focused on smartphones or gadget items; focusing on different products with larger audiences might be done for future research. Furthermore, future research could be done
