Garbage Collection supporting automatic JIT parallelization in JVM

Österlund, Erik January 2012 (has links)
With increasing clock-rates in CPUs coming to an end, a need for parallelization has emerged. This thesis proposes a dynamic purity analysis of objects, detecting independent execution paths that may be run in parallel. The analysis relies in speculative guesses and may be rolled back when proven wrong. It piggybags on an efficient replicating garbage collector integrated to JVM. The efficiency of the algorithms are shown in benchmark, and are comparable to the speed of state of the art garbage collectors in hotspot’s JVM. With this dynamic purity analysis now accessible in Java programs, the potential for automatic JIT-parallelization of pure methods is possible.

Avfall på förskolor i Umeå kommun : Vilka faktorer påverkar mängden brännbart avfall, matavfall samt källsorterat material?

Åberg, Lina January 2017 (has links)
It is of major importance with proper waste management to reduce the risk for toxic substances to affect environment and reducing the need for natural resources. Umeå municipality has developed a waste plan to reduce the impact on environment and human health. One of the goals was to fraction all garbage disposals until 2016 at the different administration in the municipality including the preschools. This study investigated pre-conditions and the personals attitude for separate waste, awareness of the waste plane content and if either of these parameters may affect the amount of separated materials at nine selected pre-schools. Web-based surveys were distributed to the personal and observational studies were done at all included preschools. There were significant differences between preschools according to combustible waste, food waste and source-sorted material. It was no significant association between the amount of sorted garbage disposal and the attitude to fractionate, practical conditions and knowledge about the waste plan. Although, the study does not provide a general picture of all preschools in the municipality, the results indicate that better knowledge and information about the importance of separating waste and the waste plan are needed. It´s also necessary to clarify the responsibility between the various actors in order to improve the results over time.

The research presented in this thesis seek to understand the constitution of the metaphor of "social garbage", and the implications surrounding the Institutional Shelter as protective measure for Childhood, Adolescence and Youth in situations of violated rights. In preparing this study, was sought to draw a picture of the institutional policy, and also investigate what impact this type of host can generate in those who are under the protection of the institutions studied here. In the field research, the locus investigated involved four host institutions of the city of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. Through a qualitative approach, the method of study was a techné, a very unique way of listening to the stories, in this case, specifically the stories of children, adolescents and youth of the institutions portrayed here. The work of participant observation followed the procedure of a general observation of conditions of each institution and, gradually, approach with the most significant stories of each context. The interview-conversation and ethnographic record, ensured the account of the experience of how it is to live in institutions, and which subjectivity is constructed inside. In analyzing the data it warns that institutions become a black box in which deposit a generation of children and teens delivered to State control. Forming an unbelieving group, and presaging your social misfit, youth fighting against time, hasty, because when they complete seventeen and eleven months of age, does not have to turn, where to go, and were not prepared for the competition at the labor market in the contemporary world. In this sense, this research proposes to warn about the formation of a variety of "social garbage" and, at the same time, claim to guarantee that children, adolescents and young people can truly be themselves as subjects of rights

To that purpose, six traps made of plastic bottles with 2 L capacity, and containing bovine liver as attractive, were placed around the garbage discarding site. The total of Calliphoridae captured was 44,688. Chrysomya megacephala was the most frequent species (93.61%; n= 41,833) of fly, with significant differences (p<0.05) between C. megacephala and C. albiceps (1.50%; n= 672) and C. putoria (0.79%; n= 352). There was influence of temperature and of rainfall on the C. megacephala population. In the coldest months, the capture of flies, especially C. albiceps e de C. putoria was extremely low. Regarding the Muscidae family, 1307 individuals were captured. Musca domestica was the most frequent species (99.6%; n= 1,302). The other 0.4% (n= 5) corresponded to Ophyra aenescens. The highest number of Muscidae was observed in the summer and in the springer. Thus, it is concluded that the garbage site of Presidente Prudente is an environment that gives conditions to maintenance of Calliphoridae and Muscidae, especially C. megacephala.

The Eco-Smart Can

Nanto, Darack B 12 April 2019 (has links)
I noticed that the workers had the same itinerary when emptying trashcans, meanwhile trashcans needed urgently to be emptied. Traditionally, ETSU maintenance operate on daily routes to pick trash on designated time, regardless the level of the containers. This leads to overflown trashcan in busy areas or during rush hours in certain areas. This overflown trashcan result in an unclean environment for the community and an unpleasant look of our beautiful campus. The time, resources and labor invested in collecting the trash could be saved. Therefore, I decided to use the Internet of Things (IoT) to create a device that will optimize trash collection, to reduce costs and pollution. The Eco-Smart Can will contain a renewable source of energy such as the solar panel. Furthermore, it will have a compactor as well to decrease the trash volume. The system in the Eco-Smart can will give prior information of the trash level to maintenance facility so that they can empty the trash in a timely manner and preserve the environment.

[en] URBAN WASTES AND THE ISSUE OF ECODESIGN: THE RELEVANCE OF BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC / [pt] O LIXO URBANO E A QUESTÃO DO ECODESIGN: A RELEVÂNCIA DO PLÁSTICO BIODEGRADÁVEL

LEILA LEMGRUBER QUEIROZ 04 February 2004 (has links)
[en] The interface between urban wastes and the issue of Ecodesign is the central theme of this work. Increasing awareness of the importance of man's commitment to the environment has moved Design towards sustainability. On the basis on the relation between people and their objects and the accumulation of urban refuse, a study is made of the make up of solid waste in contemporary cities, and present management measures for dealing with this problem are examined. The role of the designer as innovator in this context is to investigate alternatives to avoid accumulation of urban waste, from the perspective of sustainability, stressing new ways of managing avoidable wastes. Novel management measures are proposed, with emphosis on dematerialization and biodegradability. The importance of introducing biodegradable plastic in the productive process is described in the context of the world situation and of ongoing research on this material in Brazil. In this way, Ecodesign gives rise to an attitude in project design that aims at improved quality of life for people and the survival of our planet.

Monument / Monument

Mrva, Jozef Unknown Date (has links)
I base my spatial installations upon working with waste materials. I use characteristic and aesthetics of cardboard and wooden clippings to express dialogue with geometrical drawings, which I have been producing since the last year. Protracted and unexpectedly-carved shapes resemble timber beams or ruins and can lead to ecological or eschatological questions. The title "Monument" is an ironical disputation with human trace and materials we use without giving them any further attention.

An Embedded Garbage Collection Module with Support for Multiple Mutators and Weak References

Preußer, Thomas B., Reichel, Peter, Spallek, Rainer G. 14 November 2012 (has links)
This report details the design of a garbage collection (GC) module, which introduces modern GC features to the domain of embedded implementations. The described design supports weak references and feeds reference queues. Its architecture allows multiple concurrent application cores operating as mutators on the shared memory managed by the GC module. The garbage collection is exact and fully concurrent so as to enable the uninterrupted computational progress of the mutators. It combines a distributed root marking with a centralized heap scan of the managed memory. It features a novel mark-and-copy GC strategy on a segmented memory, which thereby overcomes both the tremendous space overhead of two-space copying and the compaction race of mark-and-compact approaches. The proposed GC architecture has been practically implemented and proven using the embedded bytecode processor SHAP as a sample testbed. The synthesis results for settings up to three SHAP mutator cores are given and online functional measurements are presented. Basic performance dependencies on the system configuration are evaluated.
