Gurken am »Hohen Draht«Lattauschke, Gerald 14 June 2010 (has links)

Till death do us appartbrandeus kirkkopelto, kristina January 2021 (has links)
A recent discovery made at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, demostrated in a scientific setting that the human mind has a neural mechanism actively making the self avoiding thoughts about its own mortality. Curiously enough the research further suggests that an awerness of the selt's death could potently lead to a more meaningful life. There is an inclination around being sick and weak, holding back how we approach end of life care and our inherent mortality; which in return affects presence and expectations regarding our lives. If death and transience were to be viewed as natural occurences, mirroring how we view horticulture and gardens, this could ease anxiety and phobia regarding the end.In my paper I am sharing research by Athul Gawande and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross regarding death-phobia and end of life care. As suggested in some of the literature, death-phobia may occur due to anxiety over not living a meaningful life and I am using Lev Tolstoy's fictional book The Death of Ivan Ilyich to evoke thought about mortality and what a meaningful life could be compromised of.In my conclusion and through my sculpture of enlarged flowers made out of cast glass and high fired stoneware; I modestly argue that love and presence can provide meaning and solace, for conquering death-phobic acculturation. That by acknowledging that transience is a forum for beauty one could enhance the magic of the mundane.

Urban agricultural practices within Stockholm -And their contribution to increase economical and ecological sustainabilityNassirzadeh Yazdi, Arjang January 2021 (has links)
The paper reports on a study of how urban gardening can be implemented in the urban planning for the area, how urban gardening can be used as a tool for a more sustainable city, as well as to understand the role of cafes in encouraging the residents of the Stockholm, both directly and indirectly, to engage in sustainable consumption practices. This project will look at how urban gardening tools can be used within Stockholm to increase sustainable consumption practices. The final outcome, of which, will be a mobile herb garden that travels to different cafes in urban areas of Stockholm, with suggestions as to what could be included in the area to maximize the environmental and economical benefits. Through participatory design approach a range of urban gardening practices has been included in the suggested plans including mobile gardens, community gardens, and growing local foods to maximize the benefits for both the residents and the planet. As a designer and discerning consumers I tried to start to look beyond the pure surface in this project and reveal the potential of urbanization especially by looking closer at “what is” in this case, the impact of cafes can play on encouraging citizens to sustainable consumption and that can be shared as surplus in an urban area in central Stockholm which can be prototyped and be read as a case study to “ what if “.

Případová studie zahrádkářské osady Jenerálka / Case Study of Jenerálka Allotment SiteRolfová, Eliška January 2012 (has links)
The thesis deals with the phenomenon of allotment gardening and allotment sites. These days, numerous sites have to face the threat of extinction, which may be caused by insufficient evaluation of their role in the city environment. The aim of the research of allotment sites is to point out their social, economic and particularly environmental benefits for the city. The first part of the thesis concerns the origin, development and current state of allotment gardening in Europe and Czech lands (particularly in cities). Allotment gardening is then examined in the context of sustainable development, with regard to its environmental, social, economic as well as legal and political aspects. The second part of the thesis describes the case study in Jenerálka, allotment site in Prague. The study investigates the development, current state of the site and its position within the city. In addition, it analyses the role of the site both in the lives of gardeners and for Prague.

The Influence of Ambient Temperature on Green Roof R-valuesCox, Bryce Kevin 01 January 2010 (has links)
Green roofs can be an effective and appealing way to increase the energy efficiency of buildings by providing active insulation. As plants in the green roof transpire, there is a reduction in heat flux that is conducted through the green roof. The R-value, or thermal resistance, of a green roof is an effective measurement of thermal performance because it can be easily included in building energy calculations applicable to many different buildings and situations. The purpose of this study was to determine if an increase in ambient temperature would cause an increase in the R-value of green roofs. Test trays containing green roof materials were tested in a low speed wind tunnel equipped to determine the R-value of the trays. Three different plant species were tested in this study, ryegrass (Lolium perenne), sedum (Sedum hispanicum), and vinca (Vinca minor). For each test in this study the relative humidity was maintained at 45% and the soil was saturated with water. The trays were tested at four different ambient temperatures, ranging from room temperature to 120ºF. The resulting R-values for sedum ranged from 1.37 to 3.28 ft²h°F/BTU, for ryegrass the R-values ranged from 2.15 to 3.62 ft²h°F/BTU, and for vinca the R-values ranged from 3.15 to 5.19 ft²h°F/BTU. The average R-value for all the tests in this study was 3.20 ft²h°F/BTU. The results showed an increase in R-value with increasing temperature. Applying an ANOVA analysis to the data, the relationship between temperature and R-value for all three plant species was found to be statistically significant.

Youth Voices of Bounty and Opportunity: High School Students' Experiences With Food and CommunityGilbert, Kara Marie 01 January 2011 (has links)
Currently, garden-based research does not include input from young adults about their experiences and perspectives as individuals in garden-based programs, specifically those that address issues of food and community. To address this void, this qualitative research examines youth perspectives and engagement in garden-based community projects in Olympia, Washington, and Medford, Oregon. The sample of 11 students was chosen from these projects that use food as a means to engage the community and educate underprivileged young adults about local food systems. The main question that the research addresses is: Why, and in what ways, are young adults appropriate agents for community revitalizing garden-based projects? Using open-ended interviews, field notes and observations, the research draws upon theories of food access, community development, social and environmental justice, and nontraditional education. The findings suggest that when young adults are involved in garden-based community projects, they are learning life skills, developing leadership, engaging in models of nontraditional education, and retaining perspectives of grass-roots community development. It is evident from the research and emerging themes that young adults desire to accept responsibility in their community. It is time to harness young people's energy, care, compassion, and dedication so that they can act as ambassadors to dispel the class-based ideologies of the current food systems, empowering underserved communities and celebrating youth's perspectives on food and place.
