This essay focuses on how heteronormativity is depicted and challenged in Nancy Garden’s Annie on My Mind, and the value of using the novel in the Swedish EFL classroom in order to deconstruct and challenge heteronormativity. The point of departure is that dominating discourses produce knowledge and information in favour of heteronormativity, which results in the oppression of other sexualities, but also that normative expectations are limited to their context. This essay shows that by applying a queer perspective on the novel, it is possible to analyse how the author challenges heteronormativity and thereby denaturalise it. Since a queer reading of the novel can pose a challenge to heteronormativity, it is valuable to use Annie in the EFL classroom to assist pupils to analyse and question the norms surrounding them. Rather than focusing on how some individuals deviate from the norm, a queer perspective on Anniemakes it possible to problematise the construction of normalcy.

Huvudsyftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka den syn två stycken läroböcker i gymnasieskolan för kursen Svenska 2 har på litteraturhistorieskrivningen. Denna analys har genomförts utifrån ett genusperspektiv. För att besvara mina frågeställningar har jag utgått både från en kvantitativ och kvalitativ metod. De frågor som jag har försökt besvara i denna analys är: hur många kvinnliga, - respektive manliga författare omnämns i läroböckerna? Hur mycket utrymme får de kvinnliga, - kontra de manliga författarna? Hur gestaltas de kvinnliga, - och manliga författarna i läroböckerna? Resultatet i min undersökning visar på att manliga författare omnämns i högre utsträckning än de kvinnliga författarna, de manliga författarna gestaltas också på ett annat sätt än de kvinnliga författarna i läroböckerna. / <p>Godkänt datum 2021-06-01</p>

Christine de Pizan’s book La Cité des Dames (1405) is one of the earliest profeminine writings produced in the western world. The purpose of this study is to examine how the book depicts human nature, and the ethical consequences of its statements about human existence and essence. Pizan writes from a clearly catholic perspective, but her thinking differs from that of some of the most widely read theologians in her time, which makes it particularly interesting to look at her theological and philosophical ideas. To deepen the analysis I also take a look at the much more contemporary work Den nya kvinnostaden (2005) by the Swedish author Nina Burton, whose book explicitly draws inspiration from the text of Pizan. The questions asked are: 1. What is human nature according to La Cité des Dames? 2. What does this mean for the individual's life, relationship with others and the world around her? 3. How does Burton’s thought relate to that of Pizan? What are some similarities and differences? In short, the study finds that even though there are many similarities in the structure of the works, and even though both authors are advocates of women, their foundational values differ greatly from each other; while Pizan leans on her faith, Burton rather expresses existentialist ideas. / Christine de Pizans bok La Cité des Dames (1405) är en av de tidigaste profeminina texterna som producerats i västvärlden. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur boken porträtterar den mänskliga naturen, och de etiska konsekvenserna som följer av dess påståenden om den mänskliga existensen och essensen. Pizan skriver från ett tydligt katolskt perspektiv, men hennes idéer skiljer sig från några av de mest lästa teologerna under hennes tid, vilket gör det särskilt intressant att titta på just hennes teologiska och filosofiska idéer. För att fördjupa analysen tittar jag också på det betydligt mer moderna verket Den nya kvinnostaden (2005) av den svenska författaren Nina Burton, vars bok uttryckligen hämtar inspiration från Pizans text. Frågeställningarna är: 1. Vad är människans natur enligt La Cité des Dames? 2. Vad betyder detta för individens liv, förhållande till andra och omvärlden? 3. Hur relaterar Burtons tanke till Pizans? Vad är några likheter och skillnader? Sammanfattningsvis finner studien att även om det finns många likheter i verkens struktur, och även om båda författarna är förespråkare för kvinnor, så skiljer sig deras grundläggande värderingar mycket från varandra; medan Pizan förlitar sig på sin tro, ger Burton snarare uttryck för existentialistiska idéer. / <p>Godkänt datum 2021-06-01</p>

The purpose of this essay was to analyze the stereotypical images of women in Great Expectation by Charles Dickens and East Lynne by Ellen Wood, using feminist literary criticism as a theoretical perspective. The stereotypical images that were found were Cynthia Griffin Wolff’s sentimental stereotype, virtuous woman, the sensuous woman, and liberated woman; and Ferguson’s woman alone, submissive wife and the bitch. The virtuous woman, the submissive wife and the sentimental stereotype can all be seen as representations of the Victorian ideal, while the other stereotypes can be seen as representations of a woman who exists outside of the norm. It was found that while representations of the ideal women in Great Expectations achieved happiness, this was not the case in East Lynne. Furthermore, the women who did represent the ideal met tragic fates in Great Expectations; this was not always the case in East Lynne.
