The physical principies related to the phenomenon of evapotranspiration are relatively complex and variabie in time and space. Most of the information and estimates of water consumption in non-agricultural systems comes from local measurements and it is only valid for the region around the experiment. Changes in land use cause changes in the hydrologic cycle and may affect human activities. In semi-arid regions the multi-temporal analysis of changes in land cover and its influences on regional climate is very complicated. Changes in rainfall may change the vegetation cover and consequentiy the components of the hydrologicai cycle. In this context, remote sensing techniques have been used in temporal studies of land use changes and their influences on water and energy balance. Products from orbital sensors are used for understanding the iandscape dynamics and their influence on water and energy balance in semiarid regions of Brazil and Portugal. These products were compared with ground truth. The results show a good correlation between ground truth data and remote sense data. Due to the spatiai characteristic of remote sense products, it was possible to better understand the spatiai and multitemporal dynamics of Iandscape and their influence on water and energy balance in the studied áreas. It is concluded that the utilization of remote sensing techniques is viable in estimating the components of energy balance and evapotranspiration, due to have presented a small difference when compared to field data, which contributed to understanding the dynamics of vegetation and its influence on the energy and water balance in semiarid regions.

No. of bitstreams: 1 MELARE_Angelina_2014.pdf: 7214965 bytes, checksum: 0a549fed6693f7ace615043919463fb0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-12-15 / The population growth combined with the industrial development and the increasing consumption caused several problems related to the solid waste management such as inadequate disposal. Due to global pressures and new polices such as the Solid Waste National Policy, managers need to find solutions to reduce, reuse and recycle waste. The Information and Communication Technologies and the Geographic Information Systems are worldwide used in solutions for waste management. Some of these proposals show that the appropriate disposal increases due to the proximity between the population and the disposal points. This thesis presents a computational tool, called AcheSeuEcoponto, which seeks to assist the population to properly allocate their solid residues. This tool was developed using Geo and Web technologies in a fourth-module architecture. The tool offers to citizens querying the nearest disposal point and disposal points by type of residue . Also, AcheseuEcoponto provides map visualization of the disposal points and directions from a starting point to a disposal point. The social network module allows us to disseminate the tool and as a consequence the disposal points. In addition, the tool provides to managers strategic reports related to poor areas of disposal points, the most popular points and the public profile. As part of this work, we answered questions that measure the scope of the tool, the influence of Web technologies on the dissemination of tool, and the public profile including their knowledge about disposal points. For this purpose, data were collected and analyzed using a questionnaire filled out via the tool, and a Web analytics service. Some results were expected, but the percentage of people who showed lack of knowledge of disposal points was beyond expectation, highlighting the importance of researches within the context of solid waste management.

An integrated finite element and finite volume code to solve thermo-hydro-mechanical problems in porous media

Gosavi, Shekhar Vishwanath January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering / Daniel V. Swenson / The objective of the thesis is to provide a fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) tool, T2STR, which enables quantitative understanding and prediction of thermal as well as mechanical effects on flow in the porous media under multiphase conditions. This is achieved by incorporating a finite element based hydro-thermo-mechanical stress capability into the well-established IFDM (Integrated Finite Difference Method) based flow simulation code TOUGH2. TOUGH2 is a program for calculation of multi-phase, multi-component, non-isothermal flow in porous media. It implements several equation of state modules to represent different fluid mixtures. The dual mesh technique is natural for combining both discretization methods and is used innovatively and effectively. A generalized approach is developed to accommodate the switching of variables implemented in TOUGH2 to adapt the phase changes. The forward coupling is achieved by using the thermal, hydrostatic, and poroelastic effects in the stress calculations. The backward coupling includes the effect of strain on the fluid flow. T2STR also allows the user to study the variation in porosity, permeability and capillary pressure as function of mean effective stress in the porous media. Multiple materials can be used to model the reservoir in T2STR, parallel to the implementation in TOUGH2. T2STR is implemented to carry out as a fully coupled, one way coupled (only deformation as function of hydro-thermal effects), or original TOUGH2 implementation. It provides the ability to switch on and off the thermal and/or poroelastic effects. T2STR is developed to model the fractured porous media using discrete fractures. The modeling of fractured porous media is limited to a staggered coupling approach. The fluid parameters like permeability, porosity are modified based on the stresses and/or aperture changes due to deformation. A set of verification problems, used to validate the code and display the capabilities of the code, are discussed. A graphical user interface is designed to pre-process the necessary data. Macros are developed for excel and Tecplot to post-process the results for easy visualization.
