Synthesis and Characterization of Gd5Si2Ge2-Al Composite for Automobile Applications

This thesis research synthesizes a new class of composite materials and investigates their properties, performance, and potential applications. The new materials that are multi-phase and multifunctional are considered for use in car cooling systems, internal combustion engine waste-heat-power generators, and engine crack healing which are major problems plaguing the auto industry. This research uses primarily experimental approaches to study the magnetocaloric compound, Ge5Si2Ge2 (GSG), that has large strain effects. Such a material was formed into a composite using Al as a substrate. The newly developed composite, GSG-Al, is the first material of its kind that possesses self-healing effects in cracks. X-ray diffraction was used to determine the crystal structures that existed within the material. It is found that the sintering process used to create the composite caused the formation of GdAlGe that is a magnetic compound with a high Curie temperature. The GSG-Al has a wide variety of crystal structures, ranging from face centered cubic for aluminum phases to monoclinic and orthorhombic phases for GSG. The discovery of GdAlGe confirmed that alpha-ThSi-type tetragonal and YAlGe-type orthorhombic crystal structures existed. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to analyze the wear debris collected during tribo-testing. The debris were also analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) for chemical analysis. The GSG-Al was put through tribological studies at several different temperatures to determine the thermal effects on the composite. The GSG-Al, although found to be ductile, showed high resistance to wear when compared to a common aluminum alloy, Al 6061-T651. The wear rate decreased with increasing temperature when the temperature was increased from the room temperature to 150 degrees C. Results showed that with GSG, the composite did not show cracking common in Al alloys. This was due to the unique thermal expansion properties of the GSG-Al. The phase transformation induced a significant volume expansion in the material and thus a giant strain effect. This research opens new approaches in energy conversion and improving efficiency of automobile engines. The composite developed here is important for future scientific investigation in the area of multifunctional materials as well as materials that exhibit self-healing tendencies.

Impact of consistency between brand image, involvement and brand extension on brand attitude - A case of Giant brand extension

¡§Giant¡¨ is the study case of this research, which attempts to establish what influences consumers¡¦ attitude to brand extension and brand attitude when Giant promoted extension of its brand. The study also investigated the influence of brand image and product involvement on attitude to brand extension. The methodology of the study includes in-depth interview and questionnaire survey. Consumers with high and low levels of product involvement were interviewed. An understanding of their perspective on brand image was gained. Interviewers¡¦ free thoughts of potential brand extensions were gathered. These were used in the brand extension items of the questionnaire. It is found from the study, with respect to the influence of brand image on product and service extension, functional brand image bears significant influence on product and service extension. In other words, consumers have positive responses to functional product (the bike and personal gear) and service (bike repair, assembly tuitions and exercise courses) extensions. Secondly, high and low consistencies both bear significant influence on the service extension. Consumers have the greatest response to highly consistent service extension (bike repair, assembly tuitions and exercise courses). Consumer response to low consistent service extension (bank and insurance) is the lowest. Furthermore, with respect to the influence of involvement in high and low consistent service extension, those with high involvement have significant influence on high consistency service extension (bike repair, assembly tuitions and exercise courses). The level of involvement has not significant influence on product extension and low consistency. With respect to the influence of involvement on brand image, those with high involvement has more positive response on functional, symbolic and experience brand image.

The impact of shelf margin geometry and tectonics on shelf-to-sink sediment dynamics and resultant basin fill architectures

This dissertation focuses on understanding the relative importance of external (eustacy) versus local tectonic and sedimentary processes in controlling continental-margin depositional architectures and their implications for sediment distribution. The emphasis of this study is the interpretation of clinoform geometries and stratigraphic relationships observed on 3D and 2D seismic reflection data in the Taranaki Basin, which is characterized by a variety of clinoform architectures on its Pliocene-Recent margin (Giant Foresets Formation). I combined seismic stratigraphic interpretations and biostratigraphic studies using a dataset that consists of 1,700 km2 of 3D seismic lines, 4,000 km of 2D regional seismic lines, and data from six wells. The study was divided into three sections. First, three major stages of clinoform evolution were identified based on their architectural and geomorphological characteristics. Isochron maps were generated to identify correlations between stratigraphy and paleostructures, and seismic attribute maps were elaborated to identify and characterize geological features and depositional elements. In the second phase of the study, 2D stratigraphic forward modeling techniques were applied in an effort to quantitatively determine the relative importance of the mechanisms acting in the basin (eustacy, tectonism and sediment supply). Finally, a similar approach was applied using clinoform morphologies in the eastern Trinidad margin where the tectonic configuration of the basin was completely different to the one in the Taranaki Basin. The objective was to compare the results in a region with different a tectonic setting to validate the applicability of the methodology in other basins worldwide. The results of this research indicate that the methodology that was developed for the quantitative analysis of clinoform architectures in the Taranaki Basin is applicable to other basins worldwide and that the work flow provides a more comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence continental margin development. Generic observations of this research showed that (1) underlying structures in the shelf and slope area can play an important role in influencing the location and morphology of the shelf edge area and controlling sediment distribution; (2) high sediment supply, along with accommodation, play a key role in the construction of high-relief clinoforms and earlier dispersal of sediments into deep water; and (3) lateral variations associated with high sediment discharge sources (e.g. paleo Orinoco shelf-edge delta) can generate important changes in continental-scale clinoform architectures alongstrike in continental margins influence sediment distribution patterns in the deep-water component of the basin. / text

Preparation and Characterization of Novel Lipid and Proteolipid Membranes from Polymerizable Lipids

The work described here has focused on two types of supramolecular assemblies, supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) and giant vesicles (GVs) from polymerizable lipids. SLBs are explored extensively as structural models in biophysical studies of cell membranes and biosensor coatings. With regard to implementation as biocompatible scaffoldings for receptor-based molecular devices, fluid SLBs lack chemical, thermal and mechanical stability as lipids are self-organized by weak, noncovalent forces. One possible solution is to use synthetic lipid monomers that can be polymerized to form robust bilayers. A key question is how polymerization affects transmembrane protein structure and activity. Specifically it is unclear if lipid cross-linking can be achieved without adversely affecting the activity of incorporated proteins. In this work the effect of lipid polymerization on transmembrane protein activity was studied with rhodopsin. The protein was reconstituted into SLBs composed of polymerizable lipids, bis-SorbPC, bis-SorbPC:mono-SorbPC, bis-DenPC and bis-SorbPC:mono-SorbPE. Rhodopsin photoactivity was monitored using plasmon waveguide spectroscopy. The results show that reconstitution of rhodopsin into SLBs composed of phosphatidylcholine with the polymerizable moiety in the acyl chain terminus, followed by photoinduced cross-linking of the lipids, does not significantly perturb protein function. A possible explanation is that a bilayer with relatively low Xn retains sufficient elasticity to accommodate the membrane deformation that accompanies the conformational change associated with rhodopsin photoactivation when polymerized in the acyl chain terminus. GVs have diameters ranging from several to few hundred micrometers and thus can be observed by optical microscopic methods. This allows manipulation of individual vesicles and observation of their transformations in real time. GVs have attracted attention as microcontainers for enzymes and drugs, and as biosensors. With the aim of increasing stability for these types of applications, GVs were prepared from synthetic dienoyl lipids that can be polymerized to form robust vesicles. The stability of these vesicles after polymerization was investigated by surfactant treatment, drying and rehydration, and temperature variations. The structure of poly(GVs) was largely retained under these conditions which destroy unpolymerized vesicles. Permeability studies on poly(GVs) suggests that they could be potentially used in a variety of technological applications, including sensors, macromolecular carriers, and microreactors.

Exploration of s-process elemental abundances in globular cluster stars using medium- and high-resolution spectra.

This thesis has used medium- and high-resolution spectral data to derive elemental abundances, in particular light and heavy s-process elemental abundances, for groups of giant stars in the globular clusters 47 Tuc, NGC 6388 and NGC 362. These analyses were undertaken using both curve-of-growth and spectrum synthesis techniques. The techniques were calibrated with respect to the metal-poor giant star Arcturus in order to reduce systematic errors in the analysis process. A feasibility study was undertaken that compared synthetic spectra at different resolutions throughout the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of a metal-rich ([Fe/H] = -0.5 dex) globular cluster. This study identified where on the CMD light and heavy s-process elemental abundances could be derived at medium resolution (R ~ 10,000). Abundance analyses could be undertaken on the giant branches down to just below the horizontal branch and then again on the main sequence below Teff ~ 4500 K. At all other places on the CMD high-resolution spectra (R ~ 30,000) are required to derive these abundances. Performance verification data at R ~ 5,000$ was obtained using the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS) on the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and showed that there were no large scale s-process elemental abundance variations in 47 Tuc giant branch stars. The level of precision in this preliminary data was [X/Fe] ~ 0.5dex. A resolution of R ~ 10,000 should be achievable with SALT RSS in the future which will improve this limit. The AAOmega survey of 47 Tuc stars at R ~ 6,500 was more promising in certain aspects of elemental abundance determination. The observed wavelengths included the key features of CN and CH molecular bands, and light (Z < 30) and heavy (38 < Z < 63) element spectral lines. CN indices were measured and calibrated to previous results. The well-known CN bimodality was observed in the 47 Tuc stars, as well as a radial gradient in CN strength. A preliminary subset of ten of the survey stars have undergone an abundance analysis for which the abundances of Fe, Si, and Ca were found to be homogeneous within this cluster. The Na abundances had a large range in values that were observed to correlate with CN strength. The s-process elemental abundance results were inconclusive. The Zr abundances showed little to no enhancement in the sample and the Ba abundances varied considerably due to strong lines of Ba II being extremely sensitive to microturbulence. Various high-resolution studies were carried out using spectra of giant stars in 47 Tuc, NGC 6388 and NGC 362 observed on the Australian National Observatory (ANO) 2.3 m echelle spectrograph and the Ultra-Violet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The high-resolution analysis of 47 Tuc giant star Lee 2525 found an enhanced Zr abundance in this star which resolved a discrepancy between two previous 47 Tuc elemental abundance studies (Brown & Wallerstein 1992; Wylie et al. 2006). The stars in the VLT dataset that were analysed here included five giant branch stars in 47 Tuc, two in NGC 6388 and thirteen in NGC 362. The low temperatures and gravities of these stars caused departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium in low excitation potential neutral species, particularly Fe and Zr, that needed to be taken into account before reliable stellar parameters and elemental abundances could be determined for these stars. Veiling effects due to circumstellar dust were postulated to have produced artificially low metallicities for the infra-red excess stars in this sample, particularly for the 47 Tuc stars. The element abundance analyses of 47 Tuc, NGC 6388 and NGC 362 stars found the derived metallicities to be homogeneous for each cluster (<[Fe/H]>(47Tuc) = -0.88 +/- 0.09 dex; <[Fe/H]>(NGC6388) = -0.60 +/- 0.06 dex; <[Fe/H]>(NGC362) = -1.21 +/- 0.08 dex). The 47 Tuc sample included Lee 2525 and the five VLT stars. The derived metallicities were in reasonable agreement with previously reported values. The light (ls) and heavy (hs) s-process element abundances were enhanced and homogeneous in the stars of each cluster. The abundances determined for 47 Tuc and NGC 6388 were in good agreement, reflecting the similarity in metallicity of the stars in these two clusters (<[ls/Fe]>(47Tuc) = +0.53 +/- 0.02 dex; <[hs/Fe]>(47Tuc) = +0.40 +/- 0.06 dex; <[ls/Fe]>(NGC6388) = +0.58 +/- 0.13 dex; <[hs/Fe]>(NGC6388) = +0.39 +/- 0.07 dex). The more metal-poor cluster NGC 362 was less enhanced in ls elemental abundances and slightly more enhanced in hs elemental abundances (<[ls/Fe]>(NGC362) = +0.32 +/- 0.10 dex, <[hs/Fe]>(NGC362) = +0.46 +/- 0.09 dex). The clear enhancement in the s-process elemental abundances and homogeneity in the results for each globular cluster is evidence that these stars have been enhanced extrinsically in s-process elements. Pollution events in the history of each cluster has resulted in the abundance distribution in both the light elements and the heavy elements that has been observed in the stars analysed in this thesis. The enhancements in Na, ls and hs elemental abundances favours intermediate mass AGB stars as the source of the pollution.

Spectral Matching for Elemental Abundances of Evolved Stars of Globular Clusters

In order to understand the origin of globular clusters, large samples of their stars need to be observed and analyzed for their chemical composition. This is especially true for the complex, multimetallic cluster ω Centauri, with its large range of iron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sodium and barium abundances. In order to accomplish this, an automated spectral matching pipeline was developed to determine these abundances. This thesis made use of photometry and low resolution spectroscopy to analyze the chemical composition of evolved stars in three clusters: ω Cen, 47 Tuc and NGC 6752. The latter two clusters are monometallic and selected due to their similar metallicities to the metal-rich and metal-poor stars in ω Cen. This allowed them to be used as test-cases for the spectral matching pipeline. For ω Cen, two analyses were performed. In the first, 221 giant branch stars were selected that had known [O/Fe]. These stars showed the expected anticorrelation in [C/Fe]to [N/Fe]. In the second, spectral indices were used to estimate the oxygen abundance of the stars, leading to a determination of whether a particular star was oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor. From this a catalogue of abundances of iron, carbon and barium of 848 giant branch stars were determined, of which 557 also had well-defined nitrogen abundances. k-means clustering analysis was used to group the stars in ω Cen into four homogeneous groups based upon these abundances. These groups suggest that there were at least four main periods of star formation in the cluster. The exact order of these star formation events is not yet understood, with some models predicting the groups formed from iron-poorest to iron-richest, while others suggest the potential for iron-poorer groups to form after iron-rich groups. These results compare well with those found from higher resolution studies and show the value of more extensive lower resolution spectral surveys. They also highlight the need for large samples of stars when working with a complex object like ω Cen.

The clear enhancement in the s-process elemental abundances and homogeneity in the results for each globular cluster is evidence that these stars have been enhanced extrinsically in s-process elements. Pollution events in the history of each cluster has resulted in the abundance distribution in both the light elements and the heavy elements that has been observed in the stars analysed in this thesis. The enhancements in Na, ls and hs elemental abundances favours intermediate mass AGB stars as the source of the pollution.
