Reduced Fuel Consumption of Heavy-Duty Vehicles using Pulse and Glide

The transport sector always strive towards reduced fuel consumption for heavydutyvehicles. One promising control strategy is to use Pulse and Glide. Themethod works by acceleration to a high speed and then glide in neutral gear to alow speed.Two different control strategies and four different glide options were investigated.The two strategies were either to follow the optimal BSFC-line or using optimalcontrol. For each strategy, different velocity spans between the upper and lowervelocity were tested.The results show that the fuel consumption can be reduced up to 8.1 % comparedto a constant speed driving strategy. The fuel consumption was reduced the mostfor lower velocities and if the difference between the upper and lower velocity forthe Pulse and Glide strategy was kept small. The fuel saving can be explaineddue to increased engine efficiency during the pulse. The results also show thatthe difference between the rule-based and optimization based control strategy issmall. It can be concluded that a near-optimal strategy for a heavy-duty vehicleutilizing Pulse and Glide is to always pulse on the optimal BSFC-line.

Baigiamajame magistro darbe nagrinėjamos palydovinės tikslaus tūpimo pagal prietaisus sistemos taikymo Lietuvos aviacijoje galimybės. Aptartos palydovinės navigacijos sistemos tikslumą įtakojančios paklaidos, jų šaltiniai. Nagrinėjama GBAS sistemos struktūra, veikimo principas, paklaidų eliminavimo būdai. Išnagrinėtos šios sistemos panaudojimo galimybės (infrastruktūros ir ekonominiu požiūriais) tarptautiniuose Vilniaus, Kauno, Palangos ir Šiaulių oro uostuose. Atlikti bandymai Vilniaus tarptautiniame oro uoste, įvertinant potencialias GPS paklaidas bei įvertinant GBAS sistemos tikslumo ir tinkamumo galimybes. Išnagrinėjus teorinius ir praktinius tyrimo rezultatus, pateikiamos baigiamojo darbo išvados ir siūlymai. Darbą sudaro 9 dalys: įvadas, analitinė dalis, palydovinės radijo navigacinės sistemos antžeminė patikslinimo sis-tema, diferencinės pataisos, tikslaus artėjimo tūpti GBAS sistema, tiriamoji dalis, rezultatų apibendrinimas, literatūros sąrašas, priedai. Atskirai pridedami darbo priedai. / This master’s thesis explores possibilities of satellite precision instrument landing application for Lithuanian avia-tion. At the first part of the thesis satellite navigation errors affecting its accuracy and their sources were examined. GBAS system stricture, its operation and error elimination methods were reviewed. Further explored were possibilities of imple-menting the analyzed system (infrastructure and economic terms) in international Vilnius, Kaunas, Palanga and Šiauliai airports. Test were carried out in Vilnius international airport aiming for assessment of potential GPS signal errors and estimation of GBAS systems accuracy and fitness opportunities, followed by theoretical and practical examination of the analysis data collected. Based on the examination results final thesis conclusions and recommendations are formulated and provided at the ending of this thesis. Structure: introduction, analytical part, ground based augmentation system, diferential corrections, precision lan-ding GBAS system, exploratory part, conclusions and suggestions, references. Thesis consist of: 63 p. text without appendixes, 40 pictures, 11 tables, 34 bibliographical entries. Appendixes included.

Static and Dynamic Spectral Acuity in Cochlear Implant Listeners for Simple and Speech-like Stimuli

For cochlear implant (CI) listeners, poorer than normal speech recognition abilities are typically attributed to degraded spectral acuity. However, estimates of spectral acuity have most often been obtained using simple (tonal) stimuli, presented directly to the implanted electrodes, rather than through the speech processor as occurs in everyday listening. Further, little is known about spectral acuity for dynamic stimuli, as compared to static stimuli, even though the perception of dynamic spectral cues is important for speech perception. The primary goal of the current study was to examine spectral acuity in CI listeners, and a comparison group of normal hearing (NH) listeners, for both static and dynamic stimuli presented through the speech processor. In addition to measuring static and dynamic spectral acuity for simple stimuli (pure tones) in Experiment 1, spectral acuity was measured for complex stimuli (synthetic vowels) in Experiment 2, because measures obtained with speech-like stimuli are more likely to reflect listeners’ ability to make use of spectral cues in naturally-produced speech. Sixteen postlingually-deaf, adult CI users and sixteen NH listeners served as subjects in both experiments. In Experiment 1, frequency discrimination limens (FDLs) were obtained for 1.5 kHz reference tones, and frequency glide discrimination limens (FGDLs) were obtained for pure-tone frequency glides centered on 1.5 kHz. Glide direction identification thresholds (GDITs) were also measured, in order to determine the amount of frequency change required to identify glide direction. All three measures were obtained for stimuli having both longer (150 ms) and shorter (50 ms) durations. Spectral acuity for dynamic stimuli (FGDLs, GDITs) was poorer than spectral acuity for static stimuli (FDLs) for both listener groups at both stimulus durations. Stimulus duration had a significant effect on thresholds in NH listeners, for all three measures, but had no significant effect on thresholds in CI listeners for any measure. Regression analyses revealed no systematic relationship between FDLs and FGDLs in NH listeners at either stimulus duration. For CI listeners, the relationship between FDLs and FGDLs was significant at both stimulus durations, suggesting that, for tonal signals, the factors that determine spectral acuity for static stimuli also largely determine spectral acuity for dynamic stimuli. In Experiment 2, estimates of static and dynamic spectral acuity were obtained using three-formant synthetic vowels, modeled after the vowel /^/. Formant discrimination thresholds (FDTs) were measured for changes in static F2 frequency, whereas formant transition discrimination thresholds (FTDTs) were measured for stimuli that varied in the extent of F2 frequency change. FDTs were measured with 150-ms stimuli, and FTDTs were measured with both 150-ms and 50-ms stimuli. For both listener groups, FTDTs were similar for the longer and shorter stimulus durations, and FTDTs were larger than FDTs at the common duration of 150 ms. Measures from Experiment 2 were compared to analogous measures from Experiment 1 in order to examine the effect of stimulus context (simple versus complex) on estimates of spectral acuity. For NH listeners, measures obtained with complex stimuli (FDTs, FTDTs) were consistently larger than the corresponding measures obtained with simple stimuli (FDLs, FGDLs). For CI listeners, the relationship between simple and complex measures differed across two subgroups of subjects. For one subgroup, thresholds obtained with complex stimuli were smaller than those obtained with simple stimuli; for another subgroup the pattern was reversed. On the basis of these findings, it was concluded that estimates of spectral acuity obtained with simple stimuli cannot accurately predict estimates of spectral acuity obtained with complex (speech-like) stimuli in CI listeners. However, a significant relationship was observed between FDTs and FTDTs. Thus, similar to the measures obtained with pure-tone stimuli in Experiment 1 (FDLs and FGDLs), estimates of static spectral acuity (FDTs) appear to predict estimates of dynamic spectral acuity (FTDTs) when both measures are obtained with stimuli of similar complexity in CI listeners. Taken together, findings from Experiments 1 and 2 support the following conclusions: (1) Dynamic spectral acuity is poorer than static spectral acuity for both simple and complex stimuli. This outcome was true for both NH and CI listeners, despite the fact that absolute thresholds were substantially larger, on average, for the CI group. (2) For stimuli having the same level of complexity (i.e., tonal or speech-like), dynamic spectral acuity in CI listeners appears to be determined by the same factors that determine spectral acuity for static stimuli. (3) For CI listeners, no systematic relationship was observed between analogous measures of spectral acuity obtained with simple, as compared to complex, stimuli. (4) It is expected that measures of spectral acuity based on complex stimuli would provide a better indication of CI users’ ability to make use of spectral cues in speech; therefore, it may be advisable for studies attempting to examine the relationship between spectral acuity and speech perception in this population to measure spectral acuity using complex, rather than simple, stimuli. (5) Findings from the current study are consistent with recent vowel identification studies suggesting that some poorer-performing CI users have little or no access to dynamic spectral cues, while access to such cues may be relatively good in some better-performing CI users. However, additional research is needed to examine relationship between estimates of spectral acuity obtained here for speech-like stimuli (FDTs, FTDTs) and individual CI users’ perception of static and dynamic spectral cues in naturally-produced speech.

The influence of glide path preparation on the failure rate of nickel-titanium reciprocating instruments

Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of two glide path preparation methods on the fracture rate of the Primary 25/08 WaveOne reciprocating instrument. The number of simulator Endo-Training-Blocks in each group were calculated at the time of instrument fracture and compared to determine the influence of glide path preparation on the failure rate of the Primary 25/08 WaveOne reciprocating instrument. Preparation times for different glide path methods and total time for root canal preparation, with or without glide path, was also calculated. Materials and Methods: Simulator Endo-Training-Blocks (n = 300) were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 100). The 3 groups were then sub-divided into 5 smaller groups (n = 20). Root canal preparation was done with new primary 25/08 WaveOne instruments allocated to each group (5 in total for each group, 1 for each sub-group) following different methods for glide path preparation. Group 1: no glide path (control); Group 2: glide path preparation with stainless-steel hand files (size 10 K-File followed by size 15 K-File and finally size 20 K-File until loose fitting); and Group 3: glide path preparation with rotary PathFiles (size 10 K-File until loose fitting followed by PathFile no.1 (ISO 13 tip), PathFile no.2 (ISO 16 tip) and finally PathFile no. 3 (ISO 19 tip)). The Primary 25/08 WaveOne reciprocating instrument was used with the WaveOne endodontic motor in “WaveOne All “mode with a brushing motion on the outstroke. Simulated root canals were irrigated with sterile water and Glyde was used as lubricating agent. The outcome was measured by recording how many simulators could be prepared with one instrument before instrument breakage occurred. The preparation protocol was repeated 5 times. The time it took to prepare the glide path and the total preparation time was also calculated. The data of the different parts of the project were collected and statistically analysed using the ANOVA / Bonferroni test. Results: Glide path preparation with PathFiles was significantly faster (13.3 s ± 2.60 s) than with hand files (25.1 s ± 1.70 s) (P < 0.001). The highest number of simulators could be prepared after glide path preparation was performed with PathFiles (19.2 ± 0.84) (P < 0.001). Pairwise comparisons at the Bonferroni adjusted significance level of 0.017 demonstrated that there were statistical significant differences (P < 0.001) when PathFiles (19.2 ± 0.84) and hand files (17.6 ±1.14) were compared to the no glide path group (7.4 ± 0.89). There was no statistical significant difference between PathFiles and hand files groups. Total Preparation time was significantly shorter (P < 0.001) when an initial glide path was prepared with PathFiles (12.7 ± 0.22 s). The longest preparation time (P < 0.001) was calculated in group 1 where no glide path (21.2 ± 0.20 s) was present and the Endo-Training-Blocks were left undisturbed. Conclusion: Initial glide path preparation with PathFiles resulted in shorter preparation time (glide path and total preparation) and allowed a higher number of simulators prepared before failure of the WaveOne instrument. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Odontology / unrestricted

PhD (Tshivenda) / Senthara ya M.E.R. Mathivha ya Nyambo dza Afrika kha Vhutsila na Mvelele / Tshivenḓa is one of African languages spoken in the Northern parts of South Africa and some parts of Zimbabwe. This proposal focuses on a study of selected phonological processes involving Tshivenḓa vowels. The Tshivenḓa phonological processes involving vowels under this study include vowel elision/deletion, vowel epenthesis, vowel coalescence, vowel nasalisation, vowel harmony, vowel raising and glide formation. In this regard, consonants are not part and parcel of this study. Furthermore, the study enriches the phonology of Tshivenḓa with more phonological processes thereby adding on the existing literature. The study also attempts to motivate and encourage Tshivenḓa speaking people and those who are interested in the language to have a clear understanding of phonological processes which occur in Tshivenḓa. The theoretical framework underpinning this study is the Optimality Theory (OT). The study will be carried out through phonological analysis, that is, field work and word list. Secondary sources will also be used for data collection.

Experimental test setups and simulations in skiing mechanics

Product testing and development are essential parts in sports and for the athletes in their quest to reach the podium. Manufacturers of sports equipment often use basic test methods which do not test the equipment in a sports specific way. Much of the equipment used by world-class athletes is chosen based only on subjective tests and the athletes’ feelings. One short term aim was therefore to develop test methods for objective tests of sports equipment that also tested the equipment in a sports  specific  way.  Another  aim  was  to  integrate  mechanics  and  simulations  to  enhance  the understanding of the test results. The more long term aims are to contribute to increased theoretical knowledge regarding test methods for sports equipment and to contribute to the development of test  methods  to  create  new  and  better  sports  equipment.  Experimental  tests  combined  with simulations  can  give  valuable  information  to  improve  the  performance  and  safety  of  sports equipment. Three studies dealt with the issue of objective yet sport specific test methods for sports equipment. The main methodological advancement is the modification of established test methods together  with  conventional  mechanics  calculations.  New  test  devices  and  methodologies  are proposed for alpine ski helmets and cross-country ski poles. Suggestions are given for improved test setups as well as theoretical simulation are introduced for glide tests of skis. The results show how sport   specific   test   methodologies   together   with   theoretical   calculations   can   improve   the objectiveness and relevance when testing sports equipment. However, the collected and used data require high precision to obtain high accuracy in the simulations. High data accuracy can be an issue in field measurements but also due to manufacturers not disclosing key material data. Still, the used methods  and  calculations  in  this  thesis  produce  relevant  and  reliable  results  which  can  be implemented to accurate evaluations of different sports equipment. Even though it has not been a first priority aim in this work, the results from the alpine helmet study have been used by helmet manufacturers to design new helmets with increased safety properties. This further show how an objective and sport specific test approach together with theoretical simulation can improve sports equipment and in the longer perspective, also the athletes’ performances. / <p>QC 20140423</p>

Design of a Maxwell Fish-Eye Lens in PCB Technology With a Glide-Symmetric Metasurface

The aim of this project is to design a cost-effective planar Maxwell fish-eye lens in PCB technology operating at the center frequency 5 GHz with a bandwidth of 20 %. An approach to design a cost-effective lens is to use a metasurface, which is commonly realized as a periodic structure of unit cells. In this project, a study was made by comparing different unit cells and considering the effect of applying glide symmetry to the unit cells. Comparing different unit cells withand without glide symmetry demonstrates that glide symmetry is necessary to achieve a 20 % bandwidth. Introducing glide symmetry showed a reduction in dispersive behavior, an increaseof isotropy and effective refractive index. Simulations of the full lens show a functioning lens with a power transfer of 67 % at 5.46 GHz. In conclusion, glide symmetry will improve the performance of the lens and is necessary to fulfill the requirement of a 20 % bandwidth.

本篇論文檢視台灣華語為母語之正常幼童以及構音異常幼童之滑音[j],[w], [ɥ]發展與產製表現,採長期觀察之方式,詳細描述正常幼兒滑音產製之出現及穩定年齡、頻率、正確率和發展順序,並且比較此三滑音於各音節位置之產製表現,進而比較兩組幼童之台灣華語滑音產製及音韻歷程之使用行為。本研究以標記理論及位置層級理論來檢驗幼兒滑音之發展與表現。 本研究總共觀察了四位幼童,將其分為兩組,第一組為兩位正常幼童,年齡在九個月至二十八個月和十個月至二十九個月,為期十九個月的觀察,另一組為兩位構音異常幼童,年齡在三歲十個月至四歲三個月和四歲三個月至四歲九個月,為期六個月的觀察。每兩週收錄一次長達一小時之語料,並利用錄製之高規格影音檔做譯寫及分析。 研究結果顯示,正常幼兒之滑音出現順序和穩定順序皆符合標記理論之預測,無標音早於有標音,其滑音產製之穩定度與音節位置相關,音節首位之滑音表現較音節中與音節末之滑音表現來的穩定,這與位置層級理論之推測相符合。構音異常幼童組中發現了有別於正常幼童之特殊取代模式,由較晚習得語音取代較早習得語音,其所產製的語音中會違反華語的音法限制。音韻歷程之表現在兩組幼童中皆偵測到刪除、換位、取代三種模式,其中皆以刪除為主要策略。 / The purpose of the present study is to report the developmental process of three Mandarin glides [w, j, ɥ] in terms of three word positions by examining the age of emergence and stabilization, the order of stabilization, and accuracy rate of thechildren’s production, and further compare the normative data with phonological disorder data in order to explore the possible phonological processes. This study alsoaccounts for the developmental process of glides on the basis of markedness theory and positional prominence hierarchy. A longitudinal study was carried out for the investigation of two normally-developing children, aged between 0;9-2;4 and 0;10-2;4, and two phonologically-disordered children, one of whom is between 4;3 and 4;9, and the other between 3;10 and 4;3. The data were collected at two-week intervals. The results showed that the order of glide emergence and stabilization of the normally-developing group is in accordance with the markedness theory. The unmarked [j], [w] precede marked [ɥ]. Moreover, the stabilization order of the three glides in terms of the three syllable positions was found to reflect the interaction between markedness constraint and positional prominence hierarchy. The unmarked glide in the initial position is the first to stabilize and the marked glide in the non-initial position is the last to stabilize. On the other hand, the children in the phonologically-disordered group were found to consistently replace the presumably earlier-developing glide with a presumably later-developing one, which differs from the process used in the normally-developing group. Furthermore, this group of children produced the combination that violates the phonotactic constraints of Taiwan Mandarin. In addition, there are three phonological processes, including deletion, metathesis, and substitution detected in children’s data. The most commonly used process is deletion in both groups of children.

Contribution à la gestion et au contrôle de trajectoire d'un avion avec panne totale des moteurs

La panne de moteur est une situation critique pour la sécurité du vol. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'améliorer la gestion de la trajectoire avion d'urgence dans le cas d'une panne totale de moteur en un certain point de vol alors que l'avion a déjà pris une certaine vitesse et une certaine altitude après le décollage. Dans cette étude, on considère que la trajectoire de vol plané le long d'un plan vertical peut conduire directement à un lieu atterrissage sûr. Les performances d'un avion de transport sont d'abord analysées, et les lieus atteignables sont établis à partir d'une situation donnée initiale. Une fois une zone de sécurité accessible existe le problème qui est abordée ici est de développer un système de guidage qui permet à l'avion d'effectuer une trajectoire faisable vers la zone d'atterrissage. La programmation dynamique inverse est utilisée pour construire en arrière des ensembles de trajectoires faisables vers conditions finales compatibles avec panne de moteur. Afin d'obtenir un dispositif en ligne pour générer des directives efficaces pour le pilote automatique ou le pilote humain (par un directeur de vol), un réseau de neurones est construit à partir de la base de données générée. Ensuite, les résultats de simulation sont analysés pour validation, et d'autres améliorations de l'approche proposée sont prises en considération.
