Dealing with dvinity in De rerum natura

Van Eimeren, Kenneth Steven 20 July 2011 (has links)
Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura has as one of its main goals the extermination of traditional conceptions of the gods, but gods pervade the poem in a variety of roles, beginning with the very first line, invoking Venus. This report seeks to analyze the ways in which Lucretius exploits popular notions of the divine while remaining true to both his Epicurean beliefs and his anti-theistic agenda, as well as the reasons behind these decisions. We begin with an exploration of the role of the poetic medium in this situation, followed by a close examination of the entire proem. Lucretius’ negative views about religio are brought to light and are contrasted with his supportive views regarding religious metaphor, partly through an investigation into Lucretius’ representation of Epicurus as divine. The final section of this report identifies some of the same dynamics at play in Lucretius in modern atheistic discourse and draws more general conclusions about the nature of anti-theistic discourse in a world dominated by theistic assumptions. / text

Kasdienybės antropologija Balio Sruogos „Dievų miške“ / Everyday Anthropology in Balys Sruoga’s “Forest of the Gods”

Malcevičius, Mindaugas 07 September 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / B. Sruoga’s autobiographical novel “Forest of the Gods” is distinguished from other works of Lithuanian autobiographical genre by both its ironic rendering of author-exile’s experience and quite detailed description of concentration camp system of Nazi Germany. A lot of Lithuanians have written about exile and camp sufferings; however, only “Forest of the Gods” is distinguishable by the camp regime, which is described in the novel as more or less systemized. The feature of the camp as a systemized institution lets us to make an assumption that the analysis of everyday actions done more than one time by invoking the point of anthropological view can be new sphere of research in the science of Lithuanian literature. After noticing that in his novel “Forest of the Gods” B. Sruoga traces all seven basic necessities described in B. Malinowsky’s cultural researches one tried reading and analyzing the novel as original anthropological work with conduct of anthropological research of camp everyday life. The theme of this Thesis – everyday anthropology Balys Sruoga’s novel “Forest of the Gods”. The problem of the work - to look at a camp as a social-cultural environment and with the help of everyday life analysis to discover what cultural manifestations are possible in dehumanized camp system. In the work one based upon the methodology of socio-cultural anthropology paying the great attention to B. Malinowsky’s researches. The comparison of socio-cultural environment of “Forest of... The origin, evolution, and function of the myth of the white goddess in the writings of Robert Graves

Davis, Robert January 1987 (has links)
This is a study of the development of the myth of the White Goddess in the work of Robert Graves, a subject related to the wider field of the place of myth in modern culture. It begins by looking at the conditions which promoted Graves' interest in myth, principally his experience of the Great War. The responses of other writers are examined to provide a context for understanding Graves' transition from Georgianism to myth, as reflected in his early poetry, autobiography and writings on psychology. Before looking at how Graves' myth was formed, the history of the concept of myth is examined, from primitive peoples to civilized religion. Focus is centred upon the dual tendency of myth to reinforce and to undermine authority. Some of the figures behind Graves' interest in myth and anthropology are subject to scrutiny. An account of the relations between myth, literature and psychology permits the survey of Graves' gradual transition from psychological theory to mythographic speculation. The gradual emergence in his poetry of devotion to a Love Goddess can also be traced. Detailed interpretation of The White Goddess, its arguments and procedures, brings to light Graves' theories of the single poetic theme and the primitive matriarchy, both of which can then be evaluated and set in the context of his dedication to non-rational forms of thought. This leads into a close reading of Graves' major mythological poems, followed by reflections upon the myth's application in his critical writings and cultural commentaries. Finally, consideration is given to Graves' later writings, especially his attraction to Orphism and the adoption of mythic personae in his verse. The influence of the Black Goddess of Wisdom over these later works is interpreted and assessed.
