Caroline Gordon, contemporary southern writer

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this paper is to present the life of Caroline Gordon in relation to her works and to give a critical evaluation of her works as found in contemporary reviews. The procedure followed in writing the paper was first to seek out all the novels, short stories, and critical articles written by Miss Gordon and the articles written about her. Tools that were useful in compiling the list were Essay and General Literature Index, Fiction Catalog, International Index to Periodicals, Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, and Short Story Index. Next all of the works of Caroline Gordon and all of the articles written about her works that were available were read. Critical reviews of her writings were traced through Book Review Digest and the original reviews were examined with care. Chapter I gives a sketch of Caroline Gordon's life; Chapter II discusses the novels of Miss Gordon; and Chapter III discusses her short stories and critical articles. A brief summary evaluates her works as adjudged by critics; and a bibliography of sources consulted concludes the paper"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1955." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: Agnes Gregory, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 49-52).

Quantization Of Spin Direction For Solitary Waves in a Uniform Magnetic Field

Hoq, Qazi Enamul 05 1900 (has links)
It is known that there are nonlinear wave equations with localized solitary wave solutions. Some of these solitary waves are stable (with respect to a small perturbation of initial data)and have nonzero spin (nonzero intrinsic angular momentum in the centre of momentum frame). In this paper we consider vector-valued solitary wave solutions to a nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation and investigate the behavior of these spinning solitary waves under the influence of an externally imposed uniform magnetic field. We find that the only stationary spinning solitary wave solutions have spin parallel or antiparallel to the magnetic field direction.

Gordon Matta-Clark: um corte transversal / Gordon Matta-Clark: a transversal cut

Sampaio, Rafael de Oliveira 16 August 2017 (has links)
Made from diverse methods and supports, Matta-Clarks production emerges as a significant example in the development of contemporary art, especially since the 1960s and 1970s (moment characterized by the amplification of the activity and direction of contemporary aesthetic researches). Far from the limits defined by institutional artistic practice, the artist devoted himself to investigate new and unusual forms of action, articulating process and appropriation as intervention strategies. Tensioning the material and temporal composition of the object/space, Matta-Clark exposes the relation between material constitution and behavior. Using built as raw material, deals with the discursive dimension of space highlighting the essential relationship between architecture, context and the urban. From the material experiments and emphasis of the social context in Garbage Wall (1970); alteration of the perception about architectural object and its context in Splitting (1974); to the questioning of the limited action of the public in face of the urban transformation of Conical Intersect (1975); Matta- Clark operates in a transition area, mobilizing reflections about the structures (material, discursive and symbolic) fundamental for the definition of spaces and society of his time. In the view of the present and relevance of Gordon Matta- Clark, this dissertation proposes a study about his trajectory, starting from the relation between it and the fields of Art and Architecture.

Eigenvalue inequalities for relativistic Hamiltonians and fractional Laplacian

Yildirim Yolcu, Selma 11 November 2009 (has links)
Some eigenvalue inequalities for Klein-Gordon operators and fractional Laplacians restricted to a bounded domain are proved. Such operators became very popular recently as they arise in many problems ranging from mathematical finance to crystal dislocations, especially relativistic quantum mechanics and symmetric stable stochastic processes. Many of the results obtained here are concerned with finding bounds for some functions of the spectrum of these operators. The subject, which is well developed for the Laplacian, is examined from the spectral theory perspective through some of the tools used to prove analogous results for the Laplacian. This work highlights some important results, sparking interest in constructing a similar theory for Klein-Gordon operators. For instance, the Weyl asymptotics and semiclassical bounds for the Klein-Gordon operator are developed. As a result, a Berezin-Li-Yau type inequality is derived and an improvement of the bound is proved in a separate chapter. Other results involving some universal bounds for the Klein-Gordon Hamiltonian with an external interaction are also obtained.

Σταμούλη, Βασιλική 05 February 2015 (has links)
The discretization of partial differential equations (PDEs) is a key step in their numerical solution, and therefore is one of the main issues in modern mathematics. The transition from continuous PDEs to their discrete counterparts can be done by various numerical methods, though not all methods are equally suitable; for this reason one should be careful to use an appropriate discretization method for each specific problem. In the first chapter it becomes clear, through the simple example of the logistic equation, that a naive discretization may dramatically change the nature of the problem and its solutions. Particular attention needs to be paid to the preservation (before and after the discretization) of the symmetries and invariant quantities of the problem. In the present work we study the case of the famous sine-Gordon equation, focusing on its soliton solutions. The second chapter presents a step-by-step derivation of the aforementioned equation. In the third chapter we show, by means of two different discretization schemes, which conditions must be met in order to guarantee that also the discrete system will admit soliton solutions. As is well known, soliton solutions are required to remain unchanged when they interact with each other, maintaining their speed and amplitude before and after the interaction. In the fourth chapter we summarize the conclusions of this work and draw a comparison between the two numerical schemes we have studied.

George Gordon, sixth Earl of Huntly, and the politics of the Counter-Reformation in Scotland, 1581-1595

Grant, Ruth January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is a study of George Gordon, sixth earl of Huntly, from July 1581 to March 1595, analysing the role he played in the confessional politics of the period (both national and internation) and how a strong Catholic magnate affected the balance of power and wider policy decisions in Scotland. The thesis is a narrative, with comentary on the political events of the reign of James VI, including the relationship Huntly had with James VI and the wider repercussions thereof. Huntly returned to Scotland from France in July 1581, becoming a courtier and an adherent of Esme Stewart, duke of Lennox. He served a political apprenticeship to Lennox and was exposed to covert Catholic politicking, as well as to the nascent Jesuit mission in Scotland. After James was captured by the Ruthven Raiders in August 1582, Huntly entered politics in his own right, becoming influential in the opposition to the rithven regime. Huntly assisted in enforcing the regime change when James escaped from the Ruthven lords in June 1583, his loyalty to the king winning James's trust and close friendship - the dividends of which he reaped throughout his life. Huntly initially supported the new administration under James Stewart, earl of Arran and assiduously attended to his duties in both the locality and the central government. Following Arran's fall in November 1585, Huntly deliberately distanced himself from the Court and the new Anglophile government. He opposed the anglo-Scottish treaty which was concluded in July 1586 and worked hard to counter the rise of John Maitland of Thirlestane. For the first time, Huntly made contact with the European counter-Reformation in Apriland May 1586. The period June 1587 to April 1589 was marked by faction fighting between Huntly and Maitland, who were both instrumental in James' pursuit of diametrically opposed policies. The discovery of Huntly's covert correspondece with Spain in February 1589 made his Catholic politicking public, subsequently colouring the conflict vetween Maitland and Huntly with confessional politics. Events excalated until Huntly mustered troops on the field of Brig o' Dee near Aberdeen, Although Huntly refused to meet the king on the field, Maitland's vitory was only parial. Brig o' Dee was not the manifestation of the politics of the Counter-Reformation in Scotland, but the productof years of faction fighting between Maitland and Huntly. The period of January 1590 to March 1595 was characterised by Hunrly's continuing influence at Court with marked favour from James and his bloodfeud with James Stewart, second earl of Moray. Huntly used his twin centres of influnce, the Court and power in the region, to fight a vivious and protacted bloodfeud with Moray and his faction. The interception of the Spanish Blanks at the end of 1592 brought confessional politics to bear on a purely secular bloodfeud. Political agitation from the Kirk and Stewarts caused James to commission an army under Archibald Campbell, seventh earl of Argyll to pursue Huntly in October 1594. The result was the battle of Glenlivet between Huntly and Argyll which came to represent the fight against Catholicism, although its root cause was Huntly's bloodfeud with Moray and the Stewarts. When James later raised his own army and marched north against Huntly, the early refused to face James on the field and in March 1595 he voluntarily went into exile abroad. This ended the most active phase of huntly's participation in national and international politics; after his political rehabilitation in 1597, he no longer played an influential role in the king's domestic or foreign policies. Overall, the thesis agues that Huntly needs to be understood as a political faction leader, whose Catholicism was a tool he eomplyed to widen his political influence but not the determinant of all his actions.
