Why won’t they join? An exploratory investigation of the Belgian government crisis of 2010Borthwick, Stephanie Frances January 2013 (has links)
Belgium has recently undergone a 541-day period with no elected government following the 2010 general election. This has been called a government and cabinet crisis. This thesis aims to determine what is different about Belgium in 2010/11 compared to past years and what has contributed to Belgium’s difficulty forming coalitions recently. By using coalition formation theory and investigating institutional and sociological aspects of Belgian politics, this research project has found an initial explanation for why the Belgian government crisis of 2010 occurred. Several institutional and sociological aspects are now working against each other and hindering cooperative behaviour among the Belgian political parties. Belgium has become the victim of its own well-adapted and unique political system.

Courting Disaster: An Analysis of Federal Government Twitter Usage during Hurricane Sandy Resulting in a Suggested Model for Future Disaster ResponseJanuary 2017 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT
This dissertation examined how seven federal agencies utilized Twitter during a major natural disaster, Hurricane Sandy. Data collected included tweets between October 26-31, 2012 via TweetTracker, as well as federal social media policy doctrines and elite interviews, to discern patterns in the guidance provided to federal public information officers (PIOs). While scholarly research cites successful local and state government efforts utilizing social media to improve response efforts in a two-way communications interaction, no substantive research addresses social media’s role in crisis response capabilities at the federal level.
This study contributes to the literature in three ways: it focuses solely on the use of social media by federal agencies in a crisis setting; it illuminates policy directives that often hamper federal crisis communication response efforts; and it suggests a proposed model that channels the flow of social media content for PIOs. This is especially important to the safety of the nation moving forward, since crises have increased. Additionally, Twitter was adopted only recently as an official communications tool in 2013. Prior to 2013, social media was applied informally and inconsistently.
The findings of this study reveal a reliance upon a one-way, passive communication approach in social media federal policy directives, as well as vague guidelines in existing crisis communications models. Both dimensions are counter to risk management and crisis communication research, which embrace two-way interactivity with audiences and specific messaging that bolsters community engagement, which are vital to the role of the PIO. The resulting model enables the PIO to provide relevant information to key internal agencies and external audiences in response to a future crisis. / Dissertation/Thesis / Crisis Tweet Text and Data / Doctoral Dissertation Mass Communication 2017

Constitutional Crisis And Securitisation : A Political Discourse Analysis of Sweden’s Courtyard Crisis, 6-18 February 1914Edhager, Micaela January 2023 (has links)
In February 1914, Sweden faced a time of constitutional crisis, dubbed the Courtyard Crisis, when King Gustaf V publicly distanced himself from Prime Minister Karl Staaff and the Liberal Government over differences of opinion regarding the Swedish defence. Behind this, however, was also a dispute between two different political systems. On the one hand, there was the current form of government based on monarchical rule, and on the other hand, the advancing form of government, a government based on parliamentarism. This thesis is concerned with explaining the tension that arises between, on the one hand, different forms of government, and, on the other hand, aspects of decision making in the process of securitisation. To do this, the thesis uses Buzan, Wæver, and de Wilde’s securitisation sectors, though limited to the military, political, and societal sectors, as entry points for the analysis and uses political discourse analysis to analyse the language used by the Left and the Right during parliamentary debates held between 6 and 18 February 1914. The thesis concludes that, though the results were not conclusive, the Courtyard Crisis can be used as an example to explain the tension between different forms of government by showing the difference in ideas between the two powers of state in Sweden and how these affect the decision making in the process of securitisation.

Vládní krize 2017 optikou českých celostátních deníků / 2017 Czech Govenment Crisis in Czech Daily NewspapersMarek, Michal January 2018 (has links)
This master thesis is focused on evaluating media content connected with 2017 government crisis and the influence of media ownership on that media content. The thesis analyses five major daily newspapers. Two of them were owned by Andrej Babiš, one of the two main characters of the crisis, before he put them into the trust fund. The content is analysed by quantitative metrics which are further interpreted. The result of the analysis is, that the influence of media ownership can be observed. MF Dnes and Lidovky are overall more critical to Bohuslav Sobotka than to Babiš meanwhile for example Denik is much more critical to Babiš.
