Application of Convex Methods to Identification of Fuzzy Subpopulations

Eliason, Ryan Lee 10 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In large observational studies, data are often highly multivariate with many discrete and continuous variables measured on each observational unit. One often derives subpopulations to facilitate analysis. Traditional approaches suggest modeling such subpopulations with a compilation of interaction effects. However, when many interaction effects define each subpopulation, it becomes easier to model membership in a subpopulation rather than numerous interactions. In many cases, subjects are not complete members of a subpopulation but rather partial members of multiple subpopulations. Grade of Membership scores preserve the integrity of this partial membership. By generalizing an analytic chemistry concept related to chromatography-mass spectrometry, we obtain a method that can identify latent subpopulations and corresponding Grade of Membership scores for each observational unit.

Contributes to change the characteristics of the labor and employment in general, and particularly in the health sector. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of the labor and employment of the Family Health Program (PSF), focusing on indicators of precarious work in Feira de Santana, Bahia in 2012. This is an epidemiological cohort study cross- exploratory- descriptive, with a random sample stratified by geographic location, occupational category and level of assistance. Applied to 1,041 workers structured municipal public questionnaire. For the types of characteristics of vulnerable employment and working on the indicators of precariousness used the Grade of Membership (GoM) method - degree of belonging. 3 profiles were generated : profile " 1 " , characterized by less vulnerable workers , but with lower incomes; Profile " 2 " marked by workers in poorer working conditions and employment profile " 3 " less vulnerable workers , but with low social support . Findings reveal the existence of different vulnerabilities on indicators of precarious work among groups of workers PSF. Suggested to different actions for each group of workers in order to desprecarizar conditions of employment.

Acts, especially the problem of academic performance of students in basic education of the public in the Metropolitan Region of Natal (RMN). Thus, the aim of this paper is to construct a typology of students in the 9th year of basic education, attending the public schools (state or municipal) of MRN, 2009, and assess, according to these profiles, what personal characteristics student and their families: economic, social and cultural capital as well as teaching practices create environments capable of favoring a good educational development as measured by the performance obtained in the assessments in mathematics and English language. The data used were provided through the microdata Brazil Exam 2009 held by INEP. We used the methods Grade of Membership (GoM) for construction of profiles relevance of students according to the characteristics already mentioned. With these profiles was verified, which were effectively generating good performance in school curriculum components evaluated. / According to the Pesquisa Nacional por Amostras de Domic?lios (PNAD), from 1992 to 2009, the enrollment rate of young people aged 15 to 17 rose from 59.7% to 85.2%. That is, the period of Brazilian population growth, together with its social development, has led to the growth of the school population. These increasing values only identify the need and importance of a more pronounced look at teachers. With the increasing attendance of students in schools, the role of teachers becomes increasingly complex, with more heads to manage and pass on their teachings. It has become necessary to expand the teaching staff to be able to serve the entire school population. Even more important than the expansion of the teaching staff, their qualification and qualification should also be expanded, since in the not so distant future, the fall in birth rates will decrease the population of school-age youth in Brazil. Thus, the high number of teachers will not be more relevant, but their qualities and professional skills. By saying that, this work is aimed specifically at teachers working in the basic education in Brazil and their personal, professional and academic characteristics, and how these characteristics affect the performance of their students. Thus, the main objective of this work is to determine the quality profile of 3rd year public high school teachers, and what is the relation of these profiles and their student?s academic performances. The data used were made available through the microdata of Prova Brasil 2013 (SAEB), carried out by INEP. The Grade of Membership (GoM) method was used to construct the pertinence profiles of teachers according to their characteristics. In the possession of these profiles, it was verified which teacher?s characteristics resulted in an effective way in good performances of their students in the evaluated curricular component. The results indicate three groups of teachers with different characteristics: a group considered the to be the one with higher quality, another one classified as medium quality, and the last one classified as poor quality profile. For each group outlined, the performance of their students was distinct, presenting higher performance those students associated with high quality teachers, and lower performance students with poor quality teachers.

IP Algorithm Applied to Proteomics Data

Green, Christopher Lee 30 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Mass spectrometry has been used extensively in recent years as a valuable tool in the study of proteomics. However, the data thus produced exhibits hyper-dimensionality. Reducing the dimensionality of the data often requires the imposition of many assumptions which can be harmful to subsequent analysis. The IP algorithm is a dimension reduction algorithm, similar in purpose to latent variable analysis. It is based on the principle of maximum entropy and therefore imposes a minimum number of assumptions on the data. Partial Least Squares (PLS) is an algorithm commonly used with proteomics data from mass spectrometry in order to reduce the dimension of the data. The IP algorithm and a PLS algorithm were applied to proteomics data from mass spectrometry to reduce the dimension of the data. The data came from three groups of patients, those with no tumors, malignant or benign tumors. Reduced data sets were produced from the IP algorithm and the PLS algorithm. Logistic regression models were constructed using predictor variables extracted from these data sets. The response was threefold and indicated which tumor classifications each patient belonged. Misclassification rates were determined for the IP algorithm and the PLS algorithm. The rates correct classification associated with the IP algorithm were equal or better than those rates associated with the PLS algorithm.
