(Professional Nursing) / The purpose of this study is to develop a model for effective management of grievances in nursing services, and to describe guidelines for its utilisation in nursing services. This will enable managers to facilitate labour peace in nursing services. From the research of Potgieter (1992) regarding management of grievances by nurse managers, a model case is synthesized. The essential concepts are identified, defined and the relationships between the concepts described in statements. The survey list of Dickoff et al. (1968:423) gives the structure to the model and the agent, recipient, process, dynamics and goal are described within the context of nursing services. A graphic picture of the model follows as well as the description of the process. Guidelines for application in practice are finalised after evaluation by nurses in practice as well as an industrial relations consultant. The final model follows the feedback after evaluation by the above-mentioned. The model is evaluated in practice using observation, interviewing and an instrument measuring the essential concepts as identified in the model. The findings are described in a case study.

The Coca and the Kidnappings : A Colombian Experience

Colombia differs from the rest of the world due to the amount of kidnappings and coca cultivation taking place. Using data between 1999-2008, this paper studies to what extent and in what direction there exists a causal relationship of coca cultivation on kidnappings. A study that has never been done in the previous published economic literature. A negative relationship would mean that policies implemented to reduce coca cultivation would also increase the number of kidnappings. A positive relationship, on the other hand would reduce the number of kidnappings. Using OLS-, fixed effects- and instrumental variable regressions, the results imply a negative relationship. Meaning implementing policies with the aim of eradicating coca production would come with negative externalities in the form of more kidnappings.

Societies will always fail to live up to the expectations of citizens one way or another, independent of their economic and political standards. Albert Hirschman proposed that citizens then have the option of expressing their voice for social change. This paper sets up a rational choice model of voice to empirically test whether higher levels of political and economic grievance make it more likely for citizens of a country to have a collective voice. The main result from the probit regression is that an increase in the level of democracy has a negative effect on the probability of voice, all else being equal.

The purpose of this study was to analyze a nonunion grievance procedure and its relationship to employee attitudes toward their jobs and toward unionization. The analysis had three main focuses of concern. First, an investigation was made of the underlying dimensions of grievance procedures. Second, an assessment was made of employee satisfaction with a unique grievance procedure established for their use. Areas of inquiry were selected based on the concept of procedure multidimensionality. Third, the relationship between employee perceptions of the grievance procedure, job satisfaction, and employee attitudes toward union representation were investigated. This line of inquiry was based on the proposition that the availability of a grievance procedure in a nonunion setting reduces the likelihood that employees will perceive a need for union representation, and that the strength of this association depends on the procedure's acceptability to the employees. The findings show the presence of five salient subdimensions of grievance procedures, that is, critical elements necessary for such a system to be judged acceptable for use by employees for resolving work related problems. Moreover, the data lends strong support for the belief that satisfaction with a grievance procedure available for use is strongly associated with an individual's intention to vote for representation by a labor union if given the opportunity to do so. / Ph. Potential impact of proposed "just cause" legislation on discipline and discharge procedures in nonunion firms

"Just cause" legislation, refers to any local, state, or national law which would provide, to all workers, protection from arbitrary and capricious termination from employment. Under such a law, employers could be required to establish just or reasonable cause for discharging an employee. Such legislation has been proposed, but not enacted, in several states. The purpose of the research was to determine the probable impact of just cause legislation on the discipline and discharge procedures of nonunion, private sector employers if such legislation is enacted. A review of just cause legislative proposals was conducted in order to determine what standards of just cause would be required under such laws. Since every proposal favored the use of arbitration to resolve discharge disputes, model standards of procedural just cause were derived from arbitration decisions and literature written by arbitrators and other labor authorities. A sample of nonunion, private sector manufacturing firms in Virginia was surveyed with a mailed questionnaire in order to identify employers' current procedures for disciplining and discharging employees. After an analysis of the results of the survey, conclusions were drawn based on a comparison of the survey results to the model standards of just cause. In general, it was concluded that if just cause legislation is enacted employers would need to: undertake a better investigation of mitigating circumstances prior to taking disciplinary action, provide more consistent enforcement and application of rules, and improve the overall formality and documentation of discipline and discharge procedures and actions. / M.S.

The Effects of the Conflict Settlement Process on the Expressed Degree of Organizational Commitment

The purpose of this research was to study the effect of the conflict settlement process on the degree of expressed organizational commitment of employees in a collective bargaining setting. The research was done in a basic industry in northern Alabama. The instrument included the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ) developed by Mowday, Porter, and Steers. Demographic variables measured were education, age, and sex. Main effects variables were tenure; union membership; and self-described experience with and feeling toward grievance/arbitration as a category 1 grievant, category 2 grievant, witness, and supervisor. Data were analyzed with hierarchical multiple regression. No statistically significant results were found. Limitations included the economic climate of the region and the industrial relations climate of the company.

Grievance Group Index, State Legitimacy Index, External Intervention Index, and Global Terrorism

The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to obtain a more accurate diagnosis of the factors that incite terrorism through examining the extent to which independent variables (the Group Grievance Index (GGI), the Legitimate State Index (LSI), and the External Intervention Index (EII)) can predict the dependent variable (the level of global terrorism (GTI)) for the period between 2006-2017. The study included data from the 162 member states of the United Nations, covering 99.7% of the world's population. Game theory and the political process theory provided the theoretical frameworks for the study. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to assess the effect of the interaction on the relation between GGI, SLI, EII, and GTI. The results of the study showed that the relationship between the level of terrorism and the independent variables varies according to the level of terrorism. Interaction between GGI, SLI, and EII was negatively associated with GTI in countries with low GTI risk with an adjusted odds ratio 0.99, but in the countries with a medium and high level of GTI, the relationship was positive, and the adjusted odds ratio was respectively 1.01 and 1.02. The findings benefit international and national security decision-makers by identifying the nature of the relationship between terrorism and the factors affecting it. As well, the importance of considering the interaction between variables that affect terrorism. The results of the study may serve to bring social change within government cultures in the third world when dealing with minorities and grievance groups. Furthermore, it may motivate third world nations to achieve legitimate representation within all social strata and push the international community to reduce interference in the affairs of other sovereign nations.
