Orientador: Carlos Roberto Padovani / Resumo: Em muitas situações, existe a necessidade de estudar o comportamento de alguma característica em uma mesma unidade amostral ao longo do tempo, dose acumulada de algum nutriente ou medicamento. Na prática, a estrutura dos dados dessa natureza geralmente estabelece comportamentos não lineares nos parâmetros de interesse, já que estes caracterizam melhor a realidade biológica pesquisada. Essa conjuntura é propícia ao estudo de remodelação cardíaca (RC) por sobrecarga pressórica em ratos submetidos a diferentes manobras sequenciais de cálcio. Como o comportamento da RC não está claramente estabelecido, o objetivo deste trabalho consiste em fazer um estudo comparativo sobre a performance de quatro modelos de curvas de crescimento em quatro grupos experimentais, considerando erros normais $\theta$ generalizado multivariado. Além disso, a modelagem dos dados envolve duas estruturas de covariância: a homocedástica com a presença de autocorrelação lag 1 e a heterocedástica multiplicativa. No contexto metodológico, utiliza-se o procedimento de estimação por máxima verossimilhança com a aplicação da técnica de reamostragem bootstrap. Além disso, técnicas de simulações são implementadas para comprovação das propriedades metodológicas aplicadas. In practice, the structure of data of this nature generally establishes non-linear behaviors in the parameters of interest, since these characterize better the biological reality researched. This situation is favorable to the study of cardiac remodeling (CR) by pressure overload in rats submitted to different sequential calcium maneuvers. As the behavior of CR is not clearly established, the objective of this work is to perform a comparative study on the performance of four models of growth curves in four experimental groups, considering normalized multivariate θ standard errors. In addition, the data modeling involves two covariance structures: the homocedastic with the presence of autocorrelation lag 1 and the multiplicative heterocedastic. In the methodological context, the procedure of estimation by maximum likelihood is used with the technique of bootstrap resampling. Socioeconomic and Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Cognitive Trajectories among the Oldest Old: The Role of Vascular and Functional Health

abstract: Identifying modifiable causes of chronic disease is essential to prepare for the needs of an aging population. Cognitive decline is a precursor to the development of Alzheimer's and other dementing diseases, representing some of the most prevalent and least understood sources of morbidity and mortality associated with aging. To contribute to the literature on cognitive aging, this work focuses on the role of vascular and physical health in the development of cognitive trajectories while accounting for the socioeconomic context where health disparities are developed. The Assets and Health Dynamics among the Oldest-Old study provided a nationally-representative sample of non-institutionalized adults age 65 and over in 1998, with biennial follow-up continuing until 2008. Latent growth models with adjustment for non-random missing data were used to assess vascular, physical, and social predictors of cognitive change. A core aim of this project was examining socioeconomic and racial/ethnic variation in vascular predictors of cognitive trajectories. Results indicated that diabetes and heart problems were directly related to an increased rate of memory decline in whites, where these risk factors were only associated with baseline word-recall for blacks when conditioned on gender and household assets. These results support the vascular hypotheses of cognitive aging and attest to the significance of socioeconomic and racial/ethnic variation in vascular influences on cognitive health. The second substantive portion of this dissertation used parallel process latent growth models to examine the co-development of cognitive and functional health. Initial word-recall scores were consistently associated with later functional limitations, but baseline functional limitations were not consistently associated with later word-recall scores. Gender and household income moderated this relationship, and indicators of lifecourse SES were better equipped to explain variation in initial cognitive and functional status than change in these measures over time. Overall, this work suggests that research examining associations between cognitive decline, chronic disease, and disability must account for the social context where individuals and their health develop. Also, these findings advocate that reducing socioeconomic and racial/ethnic disparities in cognitive health among the aging requires interventions early in the lifecourse, as disparities in cognitive trajectories were solidified prior to late old age. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Sociology 2011

The role of self-control in athletic performance

This thesis is presented as a collection of four studies in which the role of self-control in athletic performance is examined. Considerable evidence has documented the beneficial effects of trait self-control and robust self-confidence on a wide range of behaviours. However, the relationships between these constructs have yet to be specifically explored within the sport domain. As well as exploring the trait perspective of self-control, research has employed self-control manipulations and laboratory performance to examine state self-control. The completion of tasks requiring self-control have led to impaired performance on physical tasks, also requiring self-control. But it remains unclear whether previous exertion of self-control impairs subsequent performance when self-regulation is potentially automatic, and if any observed effects are variable over different stages of performance. Building on this work, glucose supplementation, and the duration of self-control effort have been proposed as potential moderators that may influence performance effects, yet controversy exists surrounding glucose consumption, and task duration has not been appropriately considered. Furthermore, the identification of explanatory mechanisms for performance decrements following self-control use is of theoretical significance. In particular, research is yet to explore whether an individual s perceptions of pain may explain why self-control exertion interferes with subsequent performance on a physical task. The current thesis aims to address these limitations of the extant literature. Study One examined whether an individual s general ability to exert self-control might be an important mechanistic variable that explains the relationship between robust self-confidence and athletic performance. Following an examination of trait self-control, an exploration of state self-control was deemed more relevant to situational performance. Therefore, Study Two and Three utilised a sequential-task paradigm to examine whether exerting self-control impairs subsequent endurance performance in well-trained individuals, and whether any observed effects are variable over different stages of endurance performance. Study Two and Three also examined moderators of the depletion effect. In particular, the potential for glucose supplementation (Study Two), and duration of self-control effort (Study Three), to attenuate any decrements in performance due to initial self-control exertion were explored. Following the investigation of moderators, Study Four examined whether performance decrements can be explained by an individual s perceptions of pain. Overall, the findings of this thesis suggest that trait self-control represents a potentially important mechanism by which athlete s with strong robust self-confidence progress and perform successfully. Furthermore, prior exertion of self-control impairs subsequent self-regulatory efforts during well-practiced endurance performance, but these effects are variable over different stages of performance. In addition, extended self-control effort may lead to the conservation of self-control, whilst glucose supplementation does not moderate self-control ability. Finally, perceptions of pain may explain why self-control exertion interferes with subsequent performance on a physical task.

Modelo não linear Chanter: uma aplicação aos dados de crescimento de frutos do cacaueiro / Chanter Nonlinear Model: an application to cocoa fruits growth data

Modelos não lineares como o Logístico e o Gompertz são amplamente usados para descrever vários processos biológicos por meio da curva de crescimento dada pela equação do modelo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi ajustar o modelo Chanter, assim como o Logístico e o Gompertz, utilizando um conjunto de dados do fruto do cacaueiro. O modelo Chanter é um híbrido entre o modelo Logístico e o modelo Gompertz cujos parâmetros podem ser interpretados similarmente. A comparação sobre a qualidade do ajuste entre os modelos foi feita utilizando as seguintes medidas estatísticas: o critério de informação de Akaike (AIC), o critério Peso de Akaike, o critério de informação de Bayes (BIC), o desvio padrão residual (DPR) e as medidas de não linearidade vício de Box e curvatura de Bates e Watts além de um estudo de simulação. Verificou-se que o modelo Chanter dentre os modelos estudados neste trabalho é o mais adequado para o ajuste dos dados do fruto do cacaueiro. / Nonlinear models such as Logistic and Gompertz are widely used to describe several biological processes using a growth curve given by the equation of the model. The objective of this work was to adjust the Chanter model, as well as the Logistic and the Gompertz, using a data set of cocoa fruit. The Chanter model is a hybrid between the Logistic model and the Gompertz model whose parameters can be interpreted similarly. A comparison of the quality of fit between the models was made using the following statistical measures: the Akaike information criterion (AIC), the Akaike weight criterion, Bayes information criterion (BIC), residual standard deviation (RSD), and measures of non-linearity Box addiction and Bates and Watts curvature as well as a simulation study. It was verified that the Chanter model is the most suitable one among the studied models for modeling the cocoa data.

Impact of Violations of Longitudinal Measurement Invariance in Latent Growth Models and Autoregressive Quasi-simplex Models

abstract: In order to analyze data from an instrument administered at multiple time points it is a common practice to form composites of the items at each wave and to fit a longitudinal model to the composites. The advantage of using composites of items is that smaller sample sizes are required in contrast to second order models that include the measurement and the structural relationships among the variables. However, the use of composites assumes that longitudinal measurement invariance holds; that is, it is assumed that that the relationships among the items and the latent variables remain constant over time. Previous studies conducted on latent growth models (LGM) have shown that when longitudinal metric invariance is violated, the parameter estimates are biased and that mistaken conclusions about growth can be made. The purpose of the current study was to examine the impact of non-invariant loadings and non-invariant intercepts on two longitudinal models: the LGM and the autoregressive quasi-simplex model (AR quasi-simplex). A second purpose was to determine if there are conditions in which researchers can reach adequate conclusions about stability and growth even in the presence of violations of invariance. A Monte Carlo simulation study was conducted to achieve the purposes. The method consisted of generating items under a linear curve of factors model (COFM) or under the AR quasi-simplex. Composites of the items were formed at each time point and analyzed with a linear LGM or an AR quasi-simplex model. The results showed that AR quasi-simplex model yielded biased path coefficients only in the conditions with large violations of invariance. The fit of the AR quasi-simplex was not affected by violations of invariance. In general, the growth parameter estimates of the LGM were biased under violations of invariance. Further, in the presence of non-invariant loadings the rejection rates of the hypothesis of linear growth increased as the proportion of non-invariant items and as the magnitude of violations of invariance increased. A generalização de modelos de crescimento por meio de um parâmetro de controle foi primeiramente proposta por Richards, em 1959. Em nosso trabalho, propomos uma forma alternativa de generalização obtendo uma interpretação emp rica e outra microscopica do parâmetro de controle. Mais especificamente, quando consideramos a proliferacão de c elulas, o parâmetro est a relacionado ao alcance da interação e a dimensão fractal da estrutura celular. Obtemos a solucão anal ítica para esta equação diferencial. Mostramos que, atrav és da escolha apropriada da escala conseguimos o colapso de dados representando a independência em relacão aos parâmetros e as condições iniciais. Al ém disso, ao considerarmos a taxa de esforco como a retirada de indiví duos de uma população, podemos associ á-la ao tratamento visando extinguir uma populacãoo de c élulas cancerosas. Em modelos epidemiol ogicos, propomos modelar a dinâmica de transmissão da dengue utilizando equacões diferenciais ordin árias. Em nosso modelo, levamos em conta tanto a dinâmica do hospedeiro quanto a do vetor, assim temos o controle da dinâmica de ambas as populações. Inclu ímos tamb ém no modelo o efeito \"enhancing\" com intuito de verificar sua influência na dinâmica de disseminacão da doença. O efeito \"enhancing\" é considerado uma das principais hipóteses para explicar a dengue hemorr ágica que pode levar a morte. Fizemos o estudo de um modelo epidemiol ógico da dengue com o objetivo de revelar quais são os fatores que levam a disseminação desse caso mais severo da doenca e, possivelmente, sugerir polí ticas p úblicas de sa úde para evit á-lo. Implementamos tamb ém um modelo de transmissão da tuberculose fazendo uso da modelagem computacional baseada em agentes, que oferece a possibilidade de representar explicitamente heterogeneidades em nível individual. / The generalization of growth models by means of a control parameter was first proposed by Richards in 1959. In our work, we propose an alternative way to obtainin an empirical and microscopic interpretation of control parameter. More specically, when considering the proliferation of cells, the parameter is related to the range of interaction and the fractal dimension of the cell structure. We obtain the analytical solution for this dierential equation. We show that, by appropriate choice of scale we have data collapse, representing the independence on parameters and initial conditions. Furthermore, when considering the e ffort as rate the removal of individuals from a population, we can associate it with the treatment to extinguish cancer cells population. In epidemiological models, we propose to model the dynamics of dengue transmission using ordinary dierential equations. In our model, we take into account both the dynamics of the host and the vector, so we have control of the dynamics of both populations. We also included in the model the effect of enhancing in order to verify their inuence on the dynamics of disease spread. The effect of enhancing is considered one of the main hypotheses to explain the hemorrhagic fever that can lead to death. We study a model of epidemiology of dengue in order to reveal what are the factors that lead to the dissemination of this more severe case of the disease and, possibly suggesting public health policies to prevent it. We also implemented a model of tuberculosis transmission making use of agent-based computational modeling, which o ffers the possibility to explicitly represent heterogeneity at the individual level. This approach allows us to deal with each individual in particular, unlike the model of dierential equations, in which all individuals are in the same compartment interact in a similar way as in a mean field interaction.

Age, Growth, and Reproduction of the Pelagic Stingray Pteroplatytrygon violacea in the Western North Atlantic Ocean

Pteroplatytrygon violacea is the only member of the Dasyatidae family that exhibits an entirely pelagic behavior. Age, growth and reproduction characteristics were estimated for western north Atlantic populations, where it is a common bycatch species of commercial pelagic longline fisheries targeting swordfish and tuna. Ages were assigned by counting band-pair deposition on vertebral centra sections. An annual pattern of band-pair deposition was validated through marginal increment analyses. Age estimates ranged from 2.5 to 8 years for males and 3 to 10 years for females. The von Bertalanffy growth model, a modified form of the von Bertalanffy, a two-parameter form of the von Bertalanffy with a fixed length-at-birth, the Gompertz growth model and a logistic model were fitted to sex-specific observed size-at-age data. Models were fitted using maximum likelihood estimation and nonlinear least squares methods. Resulting models were evaluated based on biological rationale and Akaike’s information criteria. All growth models yielded similar estimates, however the two-parameter Von Bertalanffy growth model provided the best fit for both males (L∞ = 54.79 cm (Disc width, DW) and k = 0.44 year-1) and females (L∞ = 65.56 cm (DW) and k = 0.26 year-1). Reproduction was determined by assessing maturity and reproductive stages. Sexual dimorphism was observed where females grew significantly larger than males. Males were determined mature when DW was greater than 38cm when claspers were shown to be fully calcified and vas deferens were coiled. Females were determined to reach maturity between 40 and 50 cm DW although a lack of smaller sized females prevented a more accurate estimate of first maturity. Females were observed pupping near term embryos ranging from 14.2 to 16 cm DW in mid-July and late September indicating possibilities of two litters per year. Large oocytes where observed in an ovary in a female with a uterus containing seven eggs with a mean mass of 2.80 g indicating that P. violacea exhibit vitellogenesis proceeding simultaneously with gestation. A clear seasonality for the reproductive cycle was not apparent however it seems parturition occurs in late spring and early fall when conditions are optimal for neonate survival. Data on the age, growth and reproduction of western north Atlantic populations of P. violacea will contribute to the lack of life history characteristics of this common bycatch species.

Esta dissertação flexibiliza a suposição de normalidade, dispondo de distribuições assimétricas em modelos de crescimento. Propõe uma abordagem bayesiana para ajuste de modelos não lineares quando a suposição de normalidade para os erros não é razoável e/ou apresentam heteroscedasticidade. Assim, adota-se as distribuições skew-normal e skew-t para as situações em que é necessário modelar dados com caudas mais pesadas ou mais leves que a normal e assimétricos; sendo que é considerado também a presença de heteroscedasticidade. Diferentes funções são utilizadas na estrutura multiplicativa para modelar a variância. Com esse objetivo, métodos de inferência na abordagem bayesiana são desenvolvidos para estimar os parâmetros dos modelos de regressão não linear com os erros seguindo as distribuições citadas anteriormente. A metodologia visa aplicação à curvas de crescimento para dados de árvores / This paper relaxes the assumption of normality, featuring asymmetric distributions in growth models. Proposes a Bayesian approach to fit nonlinear models when the assumption of normality for the errors is not reasonable and/or exhibit heteroscedasticity. Thus, we adopt the skew-normal and skew-t distributions for situations where it is necessary to model data with tails heavier or lighter than normal and asymmetric, which is considered also the presence of heteroscedasticity. Different functions are used to model the multiplicative structure of variance. With this objective, methods of inference in the Bayesian approach are developed to estimate the parameters of nonlinear regression models with errors following the distributions listed above.
