Factors effecting families' response to a treatment offer by a child guidance clinic

Stearns, Richard Prescott January 1958 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University / This is a study of factors in the initial contact related to families' handling of a treatment plan offered by a child guidance clinic. When a clinic considers cases for treatment plans it is important to know as closely as possible that the family can and will use such help. The needs of the community for the helping services of the clinic as shown, in part, by the waiting lists are a charge to the clinic to offer treatment wisely. The nature of many of the problem situations presented for consideration is such that the decision can be a crucial one in the lives of whole families. Clinics do not offer a simple remedy, but a complex problem-solving process which involves two or more members of the family in a new kind of experience with the combined efforts of the clinic team. Each clinic has objective criteria to consider in making its selection of cases and each has a vital interest in broadening this objective base for a more scientific procedure. This study of factors relating to acceptance of treatment is pertinent to that interest. Two groups of twelve cases presenting similar problems have been compared. One group consists of cases which did not accept treatment when it was offered. The other is a group of cases which accepted and entered into treatment. The application interviews as recorded in the case records were examined by means of a schedule. The schedule was constructed to examine factual data and the attitudes of both parents toward help, toward their child and toward the problem. The information from the two groups was then contrasted in an attempt to identify any significant differences. [TRUNCATED]

Lindahl, Björn January 2016 (has links)
This qualitative study is a survey and evaluation of guidance at the Guidance Centre (VLC) in Malmö. The survey was conducted on the basis of a participatory and has been through 42 polls and five in-depth interviews. The aim has been to understand how participants perceive guidance based on expectations, conversational content and outcome. Based on this, then the results were analyzed with the help of socialcognitive theory: career theory (SCCT) and happenstance learning theory (HLT) to seek understanding of what quality guidance are. Another object has been to contribute with suggestions for development of the guidance on Guidance Centre. The result shows that the majority of survey participants are satisfied with the guidance at the Guidance Center. Expectations were matched and the majority of participants were satisfied when they left. There was however a small number who were not satisfied with the visit. The results also show that there are development areas for follow-up guidance. It proved to be difficult to evaluate the quality of guidance without subsequent follow-ups.

Borglund, Alba January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study was to look into how counselors in schools and youth guidance centers works with young people and their mental health, and also to develop an understanding of what the counselors, based on their encounters with young people, think are the causes of mental illness among young people today. The study uses a qualitative and inductive appro- ach and semi-structured interviews as a method. The sample consisted of five interviewees where two of whom worked as counselors in schools, grades 7-9, and the remaining three worked as counselors at youth guidance centers. The results of the study shows that the men- tal illness among the young people that the respondents encounter is due to a compote of se- veral factors, that the building of a relationship is an important part of the counselors work, and that the outreaching work is a big part of the preventive work.

Unga transpersoners upplevelse av bemötandet hos hbtq-certifierade och hbtq-diplomerade ungdomsmottagningar / Young Transgender People's Experiences of Treatment at Youth Guidance Centers which have a Lgbtq-certification

Quiroga, Natalie January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study is to increase knowledge about how young transgender people experience the treatment at youth guidance centers which have a lgbtq-certification. Because in Sweden transgender people have bad experience with the treatment from the staff, especially in health care centers such as the youth guidance center, and even at centers which have a lgbtq-certification. Previous research in, both Sweden and other countries, show that transgender people, in contact with the health care and other social work centers, have experienced discrimination, questioning and lack of knowledge which on these occasions they needed to teach the staff about lgbtq-issues. Because of this kind of bad treatment transgender people have lost trust in health care centers and don’t dare to seek help. These studies have even shown that other transgender people have experienced good treatment when the staff have respected them and accepted their gender identity. This is a qualitative study, based on semi-structured interviews that have been made through the phone with six persons who identify as transgender but have different definitions about their gender identity. They have been in contact with youth guidance centers which have a lgbtq-certification one or several years before this study was done. This study has been made with inductive method where a theory has been chosen from the data. The theory which has been chosen is recognition, which is about when an individual’s identity is being recognized or morally hurt. The conclusion is that young transgender people have different experiences of treatment at the youth guidance centers. Many of them have experienced a good treatment where the staff have shown concern, respect, acceptance and understanding for their gender identity. Some of them have experienced bad treatment where the staff have presumed their gender, misgendering and questioning. Some staff have lack of knowledge in trans-issues but some of them have treated the young transgender people with respect. It seems that the most important thing for transgender people is that the staff treat them with respect, more based upon their values rather than their knowledge.
