Gully erosion in the Sandspruit catchment, Western Cape, with a focus on the discontinuous split gully system at Malansdam

Olivier, George 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Gully erosion is a major environmental problem not only having direct influences on site but also indirect influences felt further down the catchment. Combating gully erosion has proven to be elusive due to the difficulty in finding the causal factors and developing mechanisms involved. Soil is the medium in which gully erosion occurs yet few research have investigated it as a driving factor behind gully development and those that have has done it in a very elementary way. The first aim of this project was to physically and chemically characterise and classify the discontinuous gully system at Malansdam to establish the relationship between landscape hydrology and geomorphologic gully development with a focus on control factors. This was done by field observations, physical measurements and spatial and hydrological analyses with a Geographical Information System (GIS). The Malansdam gully system was the first ever recorded Strahler stream order (SSO) 5 classical gully system with the most active region being in the upper reaches where a steeper slope is experienced. Although piping was observed the V-shape channels and SAR data from traditional wet analysis indicated runoff to be the dominant formation process. A duo of factors, consisting of one anthropogenic and one natural factor respectively, was found that the major control factors behind the gully formation. A unique anthropogenic factor that has never been published beforehand was found to be the anthropogenic driving factor namely the ploughed contour cultivation technique employed by the farmers in the Sandspruit catchment. The ploughed contours act as channels firstly collecting and secondly moving water that would have drained naturally downwards in the valley to one exit point in the gully system. This allows increased erosive energy because of the larger volumes of water entering one single point in the upper reaches of the gully system where a steeper slope is experienced. The driving factor in the natural group was determined to be weak soil structure due to an abundant amount of exchangeable Mg2+ cations occupying the exchange sites on the clay fraction. This would cause soil to disperse in the presence of water even with a low amount of exchangeable Na+. Combat methods would accordingly exist in the form of rectifying the soil structure and finding an alternative to the ploughed contour system currently employed, but also planting vegetation especially grass or wheat in the gully channels. The second aim of this project was to determine the capability of Near Infrared (NIR) spectrometry, with wavenumbers 12 500 – 4 000 cm-1, to predict indicators used in soil science to establish the dispersive nature of a soil. These indices included the Exchangeable Sodium Percentage (ESP), Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR), Magnesium Saturation Percentage (MS%), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Potential Hydrogen (pH) as well as the four main exchangeable cations namely calcium (Ca2+), potassium (K+), sodium (Na+) and magnesium (Mg2+). Surface and subsurface soil samples were collected from active gully heads. These samples were minimally pre-processed thus only dried, milled and sieved. Thereafter it was subject to NIR analysis making use of the Bruker multi-purpose FT-NIR Analyser (MPA; Bruker Optik GmbH, Germany) with a spectral range of 12 500cm-1 to 4000cm-1 which is. Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) models were built for each index and the exchangeable cations making use of QUANT 2 utility of OPUS 6.5 (MPA; Bruker Optik GmbH, Germany) software. Five different regrssion statistics namely the coefficient of determination (r2), Root Mean Square Error of Cross Validation (RMSECV), Ratio of Performance to Deviation (RPD), Bias and the Ratio of Performance of Quartiles (RPIQ) were used to assess the legitimacy of each PLSR model. Upon validation all the PLSR models performed in line with previously published work and in certain cases better. The only exception was MS% which would require further investigation. NIR thus possess the capability to predict a soil’s dispersive nature in a fast, reliable, inexpensive and non- destructive way, thus implying whether or not it contributes to gully erosion at a significant level or only minimally. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Donga erosie is 'n groot omgewingsprobleem.

Thermokarst And Wildfire: Effects Of Disturbances Related To Climate Change On The Ecological Characteristics And Functions Of Arctic Headwater Streams

Larouche, Julia Rose 01 January 2015 (has links)
The Arctic is warming rapidly as a result of global climate change. Permafrost - permanently frozen ground - plays a critical role in shaping arctic ecosystems and stores nearly one half of the global soil organic matter. Therefore, disturbance of permafrost will likely impact the carbon and related biogeochemical processes on local and global scales. In the Alaskan Arctic, fire and thermokarst (permafrost thaw) have become more common and have been hypothesized to accelerate the hydrological export of inorganic nutrients and sediment, as well as biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC), which may alter ecosystem processes of impacted streams. The biogeochemical characteristics of two tundra streams were quantified several years after the development of gully thermokarst features. The observed responses in sediment and nutrient loading four years after gully formation were more subtle than expected, likely due to the stabilization of the features and the dynamics controlling the hydrologic connectivity between the gully and the stream. The response of impacted streams may depend on the presence of water tracks, particularly their location in reference to the thermokarst and downslope aquatic ecosystem. We found evidence of altered ecosystem structure (benthic standing stocks, algal biomass, and macroinvertebrate composition) and function (stream metabolism and nutrient uptake), which may be attributable to the previous years' allochthonous gully inputs. The patterns between the reference and impacted reaches were different for both stream sites. Rates of ecosystem production and respiration and benthic chlorophyll-a in the impacted reaches of the alluvial and peat-lined streams were significantly lower and greater, respectively, compared to the reference reaches, even though minimal differences in sediment and nutrient loading were detected. Rates of ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus uptake were consistently lower in the impacted reach at the alluvial site. The observed differences in metabolism, nutrient uptake and macroinvertebrate community composition suggest that even though the geochemical signal diminished, gully features may have long-lasting impacts on the biological aspects of downstream ecosystem function. In a separate study, a suite of streams impacted by thermokarst and fire were sampled seasonally and spatially. Regional differences in water chemistry and BDOC were more significant than the influences of fire or thermokarst, likely due to differences in glacial age and elevation of the landscape. The streams of the older (>700 ka), lower elevation landscape contained higher concentrations of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus and DOC and lower BDOC compared to the streams of the younger (50-200 ka) landscapes that had lower dissolved nutrient and DOC quantity of higher biodegradability. The findings in this dissertation indicate that arctic stream ecosystems are more resilient than we expected to small-scale, rapidly stabilizing gully thermokarst features and disturbance caused by fire. Scaling the results of these types of studies should consider the size of thermokarst features in relation to the size of impacted rivers and streams. It remains to be determined how general permafrost thaw will affect the structure and function of arctic streams in the future.

Erosion can generate great environmental and economic losses. It is important that erosion control projects have a holistic approach, considering economic, social, ecological and landscape aspects. The Alto Rio Grande hydrographic basin presents a high incidence of large gullies. A control project was the done in Córrego do Cravo Gully, city of Nazareno/MG. However, after the completion of the works, there were two major landslides in the area. The geological and geotechnical analysis of the gully was accomplished in order to understand the reasons why the landslides occurred and to propose soil bioengineering techniques for slope stabilization. Field visits and laboratory tests on samples from places with different stability conditions were performed. The tests performed were density determination, grain size analysis, liquid limit, plastic limit, erodibility, methylene blue adsorption, DTA, TGA and XRD. It was also made a literature review of soil bioengineering techniques for slope stabilization in gullies preferably under similar conditions to the study area. Most of the studied gully consists of a laterite layer over a gneiss saprolite. The laterite soil is mostly clay with presence of kaolinite and oxides, which provide resistance to the material. The saprolite is silty, friable and presents more active clay minerals. The previous conducted project used low cost and low environment impacts techniques which contained the advance of erosion, however, it presented some deficiencies in slope stabilization. It was concluded that the landslides may have occurred due to saturation of the saprolite and consequent instability of the whole soil massif. The high declivity of the slopes and the presence of rupture surfaces may also have contributed to the occurrence of the landslides. It was proposed the change of the slope geometry and the use of soil bioengineering techniques for soil stabilization and increase of local biodiversity.

Análise dos processos erosivos na Bacia do Córrego do Meio - município de São Pedro (SP): estudo do desencadeamento das erosões / Analysis of the erosive processes at Córrego do Meio Wastershed - municipality of São Pedro - SP: study of erosion initiation

Neves, Monique de Paula 27 April 2017 (has links)
Considering the geomorphology aspects, it is assumed that there is a relationship between slope (S) and contributing area (A) which determines the runoff necessary for the onset of erosion. The relationship between the morphometric parameters can be expressed by the index S = aA-b which represents the topographic threshold for the onset of erosion. Implementing this index in the GIS, cartographic products can be performed with the purpose of reproducing spatially the critical areas subject to the erosion occurrence. The aim of this work is the study if the onset of gully erosions using geoprocessing techniques to obtain the parameters A and S. The study area is the watershed of the Córrego do Meio, located in São Pedro, São Paulo state, with an approximated area of 48.06 km². The erosion feature was compiled from previous study in the area and also through the survey on satellite images and orthophotographs, totalizing 58 erosion points. The digital elevation model (DEM), contribution area and slope were performed in GIS, with different output pixels, 2, 10 and 30 meters, and for the hydrological data processing, two algorithms were used: D8 and D-Infinity. The parameters A and S were calculated for each of the erosion feature, which were analyzed as a whole, and also based on the specific characteristics such as position in the landforms and depth of the channels. The size of the output pixel reflected significantly in obtaining the parameters A and S, therefore, models with higher resolutions were used because they better represent the characteristics of the area. In relation to the flow accumulation algorithms, D-Infinity presented more consistent data with the topography, and enabled the mathematical adjustment of the threshold in the S x A chart. The index obtained from the analysis of all erosion was S = 0.060A-0.280, the index for erosions located in hillside S = 0.0539A-0.412, and erosions in drainage S = 0.0748A-0.397. Besides these, other specific indices were determined, according to the depth of the channels (< 0.5, 0.5 to 1, 1 to 1.5 and > 1.5 m). The implementation of the indexes in the GIS made possible to perform the Zoning Map of Probable Erosion Areas, which showed consistent results when compared to other cartographic products and may direct suitable occupancy in these locations, so as to avoid the onset of new processes. Although it is a model for prediction of simple erosion, the obtained data helped to understand the mechanisms of the onset of the gully erosion, and therefore, can subsidize the actions of environmental planning, aiming at the recovery of the committed areas, with the aim of minimizing environmental damage and economic and social losses.

Processos erosivos em áreas úmidas, APA do Banhado Grande - RS

Etchelar, Cecilia Balsamo January 2017 (has links)
The Banhado Grande Environmental Protected Area in the Gravataí river basin, located in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, has an extensive wetland area in its central portion. From remote sensing and geoprocessing techniques for the analysis of physical variables such as geology, topography, pedology and vegetation indices such as NDVI and NDWI, it was possible to classify compartments of Landscape Units associated to Wetlands in: Peat Landscape Unit and Landscape Unit / Flood Plain. The delimitation of these areas, aims at planning the rational use of these environments for their maintenance and preservation. In the beginning of the 1970s, a section of the Gravataí river was channeled, with the objective of draining the wetlands and making possible the expansion of rice cultivation areas, this intervention caused an erosive process in the form of gully in Banhado Grande, in the municipality of Glorinha. From a time series of satellite images, it was possible to map and quantify the evolution of the erosion process of the voçoroca between the years 2003 to 2015. The results of the mapping showed a significant increase in the gully of 2909.62 m² in 2003 to 12097.70 m² in 2015. In the mapping of gully and in the monitoring of the erosive processes in the swamp, were used techniques such as: a) stacking monitoring; b) mapping by satellite images; b) scanning mapping of terrestrial Laser Scanner. The terrestrial Laser Scanner has proved to be a potential tool for the mapping of the gully because of its high precision and rapid data collection in the field, generating digital elevation models with high precision. The use of the model allowed identifying areas of erosion deposition and sediment from the topographic profile. It is necessary, however, to choose suitable techniques for the continuous monitoring of the erosive process in the area of the Grande Banhado, combining methods to model the dynamics. These support tools are fundamental for the elaboration of the Management Plan and studies that aim at the restoration of the wetlands of the Gravataí river flood plain.

Stipp, Marcelo Eduardo Freres 27 February 2007 (has links)
This research aims to present the application of a new methodology of measurement of soil carrying over used during one-year term in the urban area of Paranavaí, in the state of Paraná-Brazil. The “Serra da Confusão do Rio Preto”, located in the center part of the city, is representative on the local landscape. In the highest parts of this hill there are many erosive foci, which are of a huge size, especially of gullies type and mainly near of its south edge, where it is developed a big dissected recess containing several headwaters drainage. Two gullies were selected for detailed studies because they are in the same geomorphological situation of a concave edge of a residual relief, however, related to different systems of soil, one on a pedological cover represented by a Red Dusky Soil, Plinthosol petroferric and Gley soil and one on PSAMENT and Histosols . The study aimed to identify the source, the constraints and the evolution of the processes that caused the emergence and evolution of gullies to devise proposals for stabilization and / or appropriate control. Five interviews were carried out with former residents of the hill about the origin and evolution of the selected gullies. Subsequently, thematic maps were produced in the physical environment of use and occupation of the research area and as a source, satellite images Landsat TM (60 m resolution) 1980 and Landsat TM5 (30 m resolution) and SRTM images in 2008, to observe the evolution of land uses and gullies throughout this period. The operational capabilities of the software used were: Envi 4.3, Arc Map - ArcGIS 9.2, Spring 5.0 and CorelDRAW X3 version 13. Then, the entries were drawn erosive events according to the methodology of the IPT. Later on, they were described the horizons of exposed soil on the slopes of gullies in toposequence, with the use of rappelling. The physico-hydric soil characteristics were obtained from field tests of resistance to penetration with an impact penetrometer, saturated hydraulic conductivity using the Guelph permeameter, followed by the characterization of the physical attributes (water content, texture, density particles and soil total porosity, macro and micro) and chemical (pH, OM, Fe, P, K, Ca, Mg, H + Al, Al, CEC and V). Analyses were performed by ANOVA and Tukey test at 5% of probability for the comparison of means. The results showed that the gully of “Córrego do Andre” is developing on old scar erosive, as evidenced by the identification of horizons and / or different soil layers between the right and left slope erosion that probably were deposited by successive cuts and fills. Its evolution is driven by surface flows concentrated on cattle trails that surround it, associated with concentrated flows that spill over the terraces and reach their borders, as well as through the exfiltration of subsurface water in contact horizons Bw Bc or with C underlying the slopes strongly inclined. The Ting gully soils with lower clay in its upper reaches, has low penetration resistance (compaction) and high hydraulic conductivity, so the progression is linked to performance continues the erosion mechanisms represented by the internal pipings. The superficial runoff contributes little to the progression of this erosion.

Acoustic Monitoring of Scotian Shelf Northern Bottlenose Whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus)

Moors, Hilary B. 26 June 2012 (has links)
An important step for protecting Endangered species is the identification of critical habitat. This can be especially challenging for deep ocean species. Northern bottlenose whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus) are deep-diving beaked whales of the North Atlantic. A population of this species occurs along the edge of the Scotian Shelf primarily in three submarine canyons that have been identified as critical habitat for the population: the Gully (the largest submarine canyon off eastern North America), Shortland Canyon and Haldimand Canyon. The Scotian Shelf population is considered Endangered mainly due to its small numbers and the anthropogenic threats it faces. The primary objective of my research was to further identify critical habitat of the population using passive acoustic monitoring, increasing knowledge of how the whales use the canyons and adjacent areas throughout the year. A review of the literature on cetacean associations with submarine canyons indicates that various mechanisms may act to attract cetaceans to these features. While many different species occur in canyons globally, they appear to be particularly important habitat for beaked whales. I developed an automated click detection algorithm customized for detecting northern bottlenose whale echolocation clicks, and long-term acoustic recordings were analyzed to examine the presence and relative abundance of northern bottlenose whales on the Scotian Slope over various spatial and temporal scales. The whales occurred in the area consistently throughout the year and all three canyons, as well as the area between canyons, appeared to be important foraging grounds for the population. The whales displayed diurnal foraging patterns. I also investigated niche separation between northern bottlenose whales and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), another deep diving species. The presence of the two species was positively correlated over all spatial and temporal scales examined. These results indicate that areas within and adjacent to the Gully are important foraging grounds for northern bottlenose whales throughout the year. Furthermore, in addition to the canyons themselves, the shelf-edge areas between the Gully, Shortland and Haldimand canyons may constitute critical habitat for the whales. This research will be used to inform management measures relevant to the protection and recovery of this Endangered population.

Francisco, Alyson Bueno. January 2011 (has links)
Abstract: The soil erosion has become an environmental and social problem, and the linear erosion of the most striking type gully. Many cities experience the consequences caused by the gullies located in areas of lower slopes and valley bottoms, and the costs to the government to recover these degraded areas is significant. Faced with this troubling scenario, this work was to present the dynamics of a process of gullies located on the outskirts of Rancharia, Sao Paulo State, at spatial and temporal scale, having as main objective to present proposals to control accelerated erosion. Through the method of cutting was possible to identify the areas with increased rates of erosion laminar and linear in a portion of the degraded area. In the method of barriers with the use of bamboo and tires, set up in outlets concentrated, it was established that the low-cost method showed positive results, with falling rates of erosion and regeneration of undergrowth. In addition to the experimental results of field work related elements of the landscape with the dynamics of erosion and introduced policies of urban erosion control, trying to point out viable alternatives in the recovery of degraded areas. / Mestre
