The guru-disciple relationship in diaspora

Gurus claim that they are able to act as mediators to put disciples on the path of spiritual development in diaspora. This study aims to investigate this claim, researching the hypothesis ‘that changing cultural environments in the United Kingdom, compared to those of the Indian sub-continent, requires a different model of the guru-chela (guru-disciple), relationship?’ In effect it seeks to test the differences, based on the stability and sustainability of the relationship in diaspora? This claim was endorsed by psychotherapist, J S Neki (1973), in a meeting in America and was published in The Journal of Ortho-psychiatry Volume 3. It discusses the possibility of the ‘guru-chela (disciple) relations’ acting as a model for ‘therapeutic care for the Hindu patient in diaspora.’ This research aims to examine critically the effectiveness of the guru-disciple relationship in light of changes the gurus have made in the delivery and quality of instructions they provide and the changes in the disciples’ aspirations in the new environment. The study investigates the meeting ground for science-based western psychotherapy and intuition-based spirituality. Both subjects deal with pastoral care components for their respective respondents, but are diametrically opposed in their approaches. The research sample in the study, are taken from Leicester, where the researcher is based, as the area provides a diverse group in the Heart of Hindu England, through which to examine the guru-disciple phenomena in diaspora.

This paper attempts to relate institutions from two very different cultures. The institution of the analytical psychologist has developed in the Western world in the last sixty years. The institution of the Hindu "guru" or spiritual guide developed in the East several thousand years ago. Yet the two institutions have many similarities once superficial differences have been bridged. First, a modern Western psychologist must admit that psychology is not divided absolutely from philosophy and religion If they are viewed simply as expressions of the human psyche. The view that the science of psychology was only free to develop after it had cut itself free from philosophy holds an important truth, yet in meaningless within the more synthetic pattern of thinking typical in Asia. Secondly, there are difficulties or terminology, on both sides. The terminology or analytical psychology are often even to another school of psychology.

(Dis)continuity between Sikhism and Islam: The development of hukam across religions

The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of the Sikh concept of hukam, which is usually translated as a divine command or order. The concept is prominently featured in the Sikh sacred scripture (Guru Granth) and is an important aspect of daily ritual life for the Sikhs. The goal of this study is to provide initial insight into how the concept developed in the Sikh scriptural tradition, as well as the implications that the concept had for the Sikh community. This paper traces the development of hukam from the concepts origin in the Islamic tradition, the writings of Kabir, and the Sikh Gurus, with primary interest in Nanak's compositions. Each of these helps to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the concept developed across cultures and religious traditions. The first section analyzes how hukam, originally an Arabic word and an Islamic concept, was employed in the Qur'an. This section includes an analysis of the derivative words that share the HKM verbal root with hukam. The second section analyzes hukam in its earliest South Asian context through the compositions of Kabir, a 15th century Indian Saint. The third and fourth sections of the paper deal with Guru Nanak and his successors, respectively. Starting with Nanak, who founded the Sikh religion, I analyze how he used hukam to emphasize a divine order that was familiar for South Asian traditions, while preserving much of the original themes discussed in the Qur'an. In the following section, I note how Nanak's successors build on his concept of hukam, utilizing it in a manner that reflects that growing Sikh identity and authority of the Guru. Through this analysis, I conclude that the continuity the Sikh concept of hukam displays with the Qur'an forces us to reexamine the connections between Sikhism and Islam, which have previously been overlooked or ignored amongst scholars of Sikhism. By analyzing the development of the concept across textual traditions, I provide a framework by which the uniqueness of the Sikh hukam can be extracted.

The overall purpose of this essay is to come to a deeper understanding about videos in the Youtube beauty community by using a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods. By answering the main questions of the essay which are; What quantitatively measurable components are there in the videos that can be seen as contributing factors leading to the fact that some generate more views that others?; Is there a set mold for success containing certain aspects that a video must have to stand out?; What correlations can be found between the two categories of analysis and how do these potential correlations affect the popularity of the video? and What effects do specific components on the level of popularity of the video?, we’ve been able to distinguish differences as well as similarities on both qualitative and quantitative levels. We have also seen that using the two methods together have enabled us to reach more profound results. The main result that we have found on a quantitative level is that there are obvious correlations between a high level of popularity and a good visual quality. What we have also concluded, on a qualitative level, is that it is not sufficient to simply provide this type of quality to reach a high level of popularity, the beauty guru also need a high level of commitment and a genuine desire to interact with the viewer in order to generate views. / Det övergripande syftet med uppsatsen är att genom såväl kvantitativ som kvalitativ innehållsanalys försöka skapa en djupare förståelse för vad det är i videor inom kategorin beauty community på Youtube som genererar visningar. Genom att besvara de frågeställningar som studien bottnar i; Vad finns det för kvantitativt mätbara komponenter i videorna som kan ses som bidragande faktorer till att vissa får fler visningarna än andra?; Finns det en mall för framgång där vissa komponenter måste ingå för att en video ska kunna sticka ut från mängden?; Vilka samband kan urskiljas mellan de två analyskategorierna och hur påverkar de eventuella sambanden populariteten? samt Hur kan specifika komponenter påverka populariteten?, har vi lyckats urskilja både skillnader och likheter på såväl kvantitativ som kvalitativ nivå. Vi har även sett att de två metoderna har kompletterat varandra väl och lett till ett mer djupgående resultat. Det övergripande resultat vi har kommit fram till på kvantitativ nivå är att det finns tydliga samband mellan popularitet och god visuell kvalitet i videorna. Vidare har vi även, på kvalitativ nivå, kunnat konstatera att det inte enbart är tillräckligt med denna typ av kvalitet utan det krävs att den är kombinerad med hög engagemangsnivå och en önskan att interagera med tittaren från beauty guruns sida för att videon ska generera visningar.

This thesis deals with the design of three labs in the simulation environment OPNET IT Guru. The first lab demonstrates the differences between the RM OSI transport layer protocols - TCP and UDP. The second lab discusses the role of ICMP protocol and its most famous feature - PING. The third lab is devoted to Application Characterization Environment (ACE) module, which is included in OPNET IT Guru. Theoretical background is provided for all of the mentioned topics. All designed labs can be used to teach at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication of BUT on subjects dealing with network technologies.

Šiame magistro baigiamajame darbe yra nagrinėjama analitinės informacijos įtaka akcijų rinkoms. Šiandieninio akcijų rinkų pasaulyje ne vienas investuotojas norėdamas sėkmingai investuoti turi sekti ir rinkoje pasirodančią analitinę informacija. Tinkamai ją įvertinus ir panaudojus, gali būti puiki pagalba sėkmingam investavimui. Pagrindinis darbo objektas yra kokybiniu požiūriu ir subjektyvumu pasižyminčios analitinės informacijos analizės metodai.Darbo tikslas pasiūlyti ir ištirti informacinės sistemos modelį, skirtą analizuoti ir įvertinti analitinės informacijos įtaką akcijų rinkoje. Pirmoje darbo dalyje yra išnagrinėta visa literatūra susijusi su analitinės informacijos poveikių akcijų rinkoms, jos analizės galimybes. Antroje darbo dalyje pateikiamas sistemos modelis, kuris išanalizuoti tos informacijos poveikį rinkai, bei tinkamai ją įvertinti. Siūlomo modelio esmė yra bendrai įvertinti analitinės informacijos įtaką JAV akcijų rinkai. Modelį sudaro du etapai: guru rekomendacijos pasiteisinimas ir pagrindinių JAV ekonominių rodiklių įtaka akcijų rinkai. Vėliau remiantis pasiūlytu sistemos modeliu buvo atliktas tyrimas. Virtualioje erdvėje buvo atliktas eksperimentas, kurio metu buvo į akcijų portfelį įtrauktos 4 JAV įmonių akcijos, kurias rekomendavo guru. Gauti eksperimento rezultatai rodo, kad guru rekomenduotos kompanijos pasitvirtino ir portfelio grąža po pusmečio 2011.05.15 dienai buvo +13,42%. S&P500 indekso pokytis ekperimentu laiku +2.97%. Stock markets in today's world, no one investor to invest in order to successfully track and analytical information that appears on the market. Properly evaluated and used, can be a great help for successful investing. The main object of this work is qualitatively characterized by subjectivism and analytical information analysis. The main point of this work is to offer information and investigate a model system to analyze and evaluate the analytical information available on the stock market. The first part is the examination of all the literature related to analytical information influences stock markets, its analysis capabilities. The second part of the system model, which analyze the implications of the market, and properly evaluate it. The essence of the proposed model is an overall assessment of the analytical information available on the U.S. stock market. The model consists of two phases: Guru Recommendations and justification of major U.S. economic indicators influence the stock market. Later, on the basis of the proposed model system was investigated. Virtual environment experiment was conducted, during which the portfolio includes four U.S. companies' shares, recommended by the gurus. Percy Barnevik’s 200 Advice- Corporate Bullshit or Scientifically Proven Praxis : A picture of how well Guru Theory in general and Percy Barnevik specifically is connected to management research and practice

Percy Barnevik is one example of a renowned leader publishing a book, “Leadership- 200 advice”, on his experiences as a manager. The overall quantity of this so called Guru Literature on the market demonstrate that it exist a great interest in advice from business leaders but further raise a question of soundness of the advice. The aim with the thesis is to generate a picture of how well Guru Theory in general and Percy Barnevik specifically is connected to management research and practice. What constitute evidence is often debated within the management research field and scholars mean that one cannot assume a fact without any evidence created from research. This leads to a discussion about rigor and relevance and how management research should be designed to create a rigorous study, without overshadowing its practical relevance to the operating business. To answer the research question, interviews were executed with complementary questionnaires. In order to create a picture of what kind of anchoring Barnevik’s advice have in management theory a literature review was conducted. It is possible to see that the majority of the practitioners compared to research have a different level of cohesiveness with Barnevik regarding the studied advice. Practitioners, tend to a high level agree with Barnevik although management research stand for a more hesitant approach. Our conclusions are that management researchers should consider Guru Theory to a greater extent rather than discard it. This we believe could generate relevant research contributions to practitioners and add rigor to an unscientific field of theories

Seeking the enlightened self : a sociological study of popular teachings about spiritual enlightenment

This is a study of self and authority in the popular spiritual field. Since Heelas's The New Age Movement (1996), the notion of a common Self-spirituality in which seekers trust the authority of the Self has been familiar within academe. Yet, contrary to the direction of Heelas's earlier work on indigenous psychologies and self-religions, the different ways participants conceive terms like seeker and self has largely escaped analysis. This omission allows scholars to homogenise diverse activities and portray broad cultural trends. But, it also black boxes the self, side-lines how authority actually works, and obscures conflicts between participants. I address such gaps by examining four international enlightenment cultures, each with a guru (Andrew Cohen; Gangaji; Tony Parsons; and Steven Saunders of Holigral ). Research materials include field experiences, recorded events, and participants printed and online publications. Combining multi-site ethnography with sociological conversation and discourse analysis, and drawing upon science and technology studies throughout, my argument addresses three themes: seekers; gurus; and truths. Developing Heelas's earlier work, I show seekers are not pre-constituted but configured in interactional practices which draw upon various cultural idealisations of the self. An enlightened self is likewise configured differently in each culture. I show such mundane local practices constitute gurus as experiential experts through associating their personas with participants configured experiences of self. Different configurations of self are consequential, implying differing modes of engagement with wider society and figuring in credibility contests between different cultures. I provide a way of understanding enlightenment cultures which avoids homogenising them, considers their respective potentials to promote social change, and accounts for antagonisms between them. As tangential themes, through a literary Seeker Self voice, I address issues of distance and engagement in studying spirituality and the often transparent penetration of academic discourse by the discourse of spirituality, or its spiritual repertoire.
