Am 2. Mai startete in insgesamt 33 öffentlichen Bibliotheken in Sachsen und mit rund 120 geschulten Bibliothekaren das Projekt „Chance Inklusion“. In den Partnerbibliotheken wird nun ein neuer Service angeboten, der den Gedanken der Inklusion unmittelbar stützt: Leser, deren Sehkraft nachlässt, werden fachkundig beraten und können auf einen zusätzlichen Bestand an speziellen Hörbüchern zugreifen. Mehr als 33.000 Hörbücher im barrierefreien DAISY-Format aus der Deutschen Zentralbücherei für Blinde (DZB) stehen den beteiligten Bibliotheken und ihren Nutzern zur Verfügung. Erste Erfahrungen beim Test des neuen Ausleihprojektes machte die Stadtbibliothek Strehla. Die Anmeldung und der Ablauf an sich sind einfach und unkompliziert, die Mitarbeiter der jeweiligen Bibliotheken stehen zudem jederzeit helfend zur Seite. Besonders für sehbehinderte Bibliotheksnutzer im ländlichen Raum eröffnen sich im Hinblick auf die große Medienauswahl der DZB nun ganz neue Perspektiven beim Lese- bzw. Hörvergnügen. „Chance Inklusion“ läuft zunächst für ein Jahr. Danach werden sich alle Beteiligten bei einem Treffen über die gesammelten Erfahrungen, entstandenen Möglichkeiten und das weitere Verfahren austauschen. Es soll in Zukunft an vielen weiteren öffentlichen Bibliotheken in ganz Sachsen etabliert werden.

DAISY book production at the ONCE, with the digitization and subsequent reformatting of our stacks to the DAISY standard, has pursued two key objectives: to digitize our collection as quickly and efficiently as possible and to lower the production costs of digital talking books in DAISY format. This discussion describes the highlights of that process.

The purpose of this two-year project (2009-2010) is to improve the distribution of DAISY content and the development of an online delivery service of DAISY content, both talking books and talking newspapers. The project is carried out by two organizations: Celia – the national library for persons with print disabilities in Finland (hereinafter Celia) – and the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired (hereinafter the FFVI). The solution will be based on network-capable DAISY players, not on computers. An online delivery platform supporting the international standard DAISY Online will be developed. The project involves 960 of Celia’s clients. These clients will be provided with a DAISY player and an Internet connection. The results of this pilot project will be used in building a national online delivery service system of DAISY content in Finland.

Is it possible to produce DAISY talking books of acceptable quality without manually adjusting the reading order, inserting page numbers, fine-tuning lexicons, and so on? This question is especially urgent with regard to our open educational resources published on the OpenLearn website. This presentation recounts our experiences of a fully automated production process for DAISY talking books using only open source tools.

DAISY has published a Specification for DAISY Protected Digital Talking Book. This paper discusses why such a specification is useful, not only for rightsholders but also for readers with print disabilities. An implementation of PDTB2 is proposed, called dtbprotect. It makes possible to simply produce an encrypted book from a book in DAISY format. It is currently experimented on the Helene Digital Library for the blind. It will be made available open source as to facilitate its implementation by other digital libraries.
