Reprodução e famílias escravas em Mariana - 1850-1888. / Slave reproduction and slave families in Mariana - 1850-1888.Heloísa Maria Teixeira 18 January 2002 (has links)
Many are the studies dedicated to slave reproduction and slave families in Brazil. Only a few, though, focus on regions not engaged in export economy. This work, which belongs to the field of historical demography, studies slave reproduction and slave families in Mariana during the second half of the 19th century. Mariana, a locality in the province of Minas Gerais, turned to subsistence economy and internal market production since de decline of gold production. This work begins with a description of the main economic characteristics of Mariana and of its slave population, speculating on the strategies for maintaining slavery used in the region during that period. The structure and demographic characteristics of slave families were analyzed through information obtained in post-mortem inventories (our main source) and secondary sources such as wedding and baptism registries and records of slave purchases and sales. Additionally, those sources highlighted the importance of slave families in the process of development of slaveholdings in Mariana during the last decades of slavery in Brazil, a period marked by a legislation that was oriented to that process and has undeniably influenced it.

Mot bättre hälsa : Dödlighet och hälsoarbete i Linköping 1860-1894 / Towards Better Health : Mortality and Public Health in Linköping 1860-1894Nilsson, Hans January 1994 (has links)
The decline in mortality was the most important cause of the great increase in population in Sweden in the 19th century. Especially important was the part played by the decline in infant mortality and mortality among small children. The purpose of this study has been to investigate on the basis of a local example, Linköping during the period 1860-94, the changes in morbidity and mortality in different population groups, and to analyse what factors played a significant role in bringing about the changes. The study is not only epidemiological. It also deals with new technology, new ideas and different actors. The focus is on three arenas: the societal level, the environmental level and the individual level. By the societal level is meant the central arena and the decisions that were taken there. The environmental level contains the study of local public health and a reconstruction of how water and drainage progressed and what properties it came to year by year. The individual level involves the study of a number of variables which the individuals themselves can have influenced in different degrees.

La fécondité à Paris et dans sa région au XIXe siècle / Fertility in Paris and the surrounding region in the nineteenth centuryBrée, Sandra 10 June 2011 (has links)
In the century of birth control in France, the capital and the surrounding region is a privileged analytical framework for deepening knowledge on demographic transition. Through an aggregative analysis appropriate to the sources and the issues examined, this work aims to understand the movement of fertility in Paris (at the district, borough and city level), and the surrounding region (at the departmental and municipal level) in the nineteenth century, to distinguish legitimate and illegitimate fertility (and cohabiting couples from unwed mothers for the latter); and then to consider it in relation to economic, social, cultural or demographic determinants in order to understand, through the spatial distribution, the social differentiation of fertility behaviours.

Vývoj obyvatelstva ve městě Brně v letech 1880-1910 / Development of the population in the city of Brno in the period 1880-1910Horáková, Lucie January 2020 (has links)
Development of the population in the city of Brno in the period 1880-1910 Abstract The aim of this thesis is an analysis and description of population development in the city of Brno between 1880-1910, Demographic analysis was performed based on census data (1880, 1890, 1900 and 1910) and statistics of population movements (1881-1910). Basic demographic methods were used for this analysis. Thesis is divided into 6 chapters introducing socio-economic characteristics as well as demographic characteristics of population of Brno. Demographic revolution started during this time and the data collected show its impact on the studied population. The results of the analysis indicate a population growth mainly due to migration, and change in age structure that exhibit aging of the population. Lastly, the data show that fertility and mortality levels decreased while nuptiality increased. Keywords: population, population development, historical demography, city of Brno

Previous issue date: 2010-09-24 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas / The floodplain ecosystem shelters and supports most of the fish stocks of commercial importance, such as the tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum, which is considered a key species of this ecosystem. This fish is the largest characin of the Amazon and it is highly appreciated as food by the local population. Currently the tambaqui represents 70% of the regional pisciculture, but despite increasing aquiculture output, wild populations have been experiencing severe over-exploitation. To manage natural stocks of tambaqui it is necessary to access a range of
information from diverse areas of knowledge, including genetics. It is thus of fundamental importance to access levels of genetic variability and how this variability
is distributed throughout the Amazon region where the species occurs. This information is necessary to guide management strategies and conservation of this
species. To obtain such information, mitochondrial (control region and ATPase gene) and nuclear (microsatellites) molecular markers were used. In this study 14 highly
polymorphic microsatellite loci for the tambaqui were developed. These molecular markers were successfully transferred to other species of serrasalmids. For the
genetic characterization of the tambaqui, 21 localities in the Amazon basin were sampled. We sequenced 1561pb (control region + ATPase gene) from 539 individuals finding 444 haplotypes, of which 440 were unique. The haplotype diversity was high and relatively homogeneous among all localities, however diversity was smallest in Porto Velho. Data from 12 microsatellite loci were collected from 604 individuals, showing an average of 21,4 alleles per locus. Total HE was 0,78 and heterozygosity levels were homogeneous among sampled localities. Porto Velho and Guaporé showed lower values of HE. These results suggest high levels of genetic
variability in the tambaqui. AMOVA and other tests to detect population structure based on both markers indicated that within the Brazilian Amazon basin, the
tambaqui comprises a single large population, supported by high gene flow between localities. These results indicate that species management in this area can be unified. Considering the entire sampling scheme, the data suggest a metapopulation scenario between the Brazilian and Bolivian basins, with low genetic differentiation between the basins and restricted gene flow due to isolation by distance. The rapids of the Tapajós and Madeira Rivers are not barriers to gene flow among population samples of tambaqui. A demographically stable population was detected in the Bolivian basin
and a historical demographic expansion in the Amazon basin, supported by the large number of haplotypes and the presence of unique alleles in Brazilian localities. The
migration rates were higher from white water tributaries to the main channel, while the opposite was true for the clear waters of Tapajós River. The effective population
size (Ne) was greater in the channel, and in Jacareacanga and Boca do Acre. Genetic effects of over-exploitation were not detected in the tambaqui due to the high
genetic diversity found. However, these findings are showing the historical status compatible with a large effective population size of the species in the past since the time of over-exploitation is still be short to be registered genetically.
Considerando toda a amostragem do

Malta, Motherhood, and Infant Mortality: Integrating Biological and Sociocultural InsightsWalz, Leah Claire 01 August 2008 (has links)
Because infants are the most vulnerable members of a community, their deaths – and the resulting infant mortality rate (IMR) – are said to signal more fundamental problems that are likely to affect the general health of a community. However, a focus on proximate- and intermediate-level risk factors in epidemiological analyses presents a decontextualized picture and ignores the role of larger forces on health, disease, and illness. In response to this trend, this project will contribute to a revitalization of the use of infant mortality as an index of larger social problems by tempering statistical analyses with critical reflection regarding the effects of the liminal position of Malta within the British imperial system, prior to the Second World War. In addition, by bringing together several analytic approaches which often proceed in parallel, rather than in dialogue – historical epidemiology, social history, and the analysis of colonial discourse – this dissertation highlights the problematics of knowledge production at both the theoretical and methodological level. As a result, my work is not just about Malta, one moment in history, the calculation of infant mortality rates, or the disentanglement of various determinants of infant mortality in this context; it is about the dynamics and repercussions of power differentials and of social, economic, and political inequalities, as they define and structure health outcomes and experiences. Specifically, I will show that fluctuations in international tensions affected Malta’s population on a number of levels because of the island’s importance as a British military and naval base and its location in the middle of the Mediterranean. I will demonstrate how Malta’s “strategic position” restricted political and economic development in the island and articulated with colonial perceptions of the Maltese as “Other” and Malta as “overpopulated.” Finally, I will argue that international tensions, Malta’s location within Empire, and perceptions of the island and its inhabitants in the early twentieth century affected the ways in which infant deaths were explained and understood and the strategies of intervention initiated in the island to curtail infant mortality – all of which had a tremendous impact on the rates at which infants in Malta died.
