The Justificatory Role of Habit in Hegel's Theory of Ethical Life

Recent scholarship on Hegel has employed the Wittgensteinian concept of a "form of life" in order to explain how sociality shapes and determines the reflective practices of self-conscious individuals. However, few of these scholars have considered how the non-reflective aspects of inhabiting a form of life- especially the abilities to form habits and to have feelings- contribute to the reflective aspects. In this thesis I argue that this oversight leads to serious exegetical and philosophical problems for making sense of Hegel's theory of ethical life. Not only does Hegel regard habit and feeling as playing a necessary role in the justification of our reflective practices, but he is right to do so, since, were he not to consider these factors, he could not account for how any of our moral claims could be justified.

Gustave Flaubert et Guy de Maupassant étaient des amis et des écrivains réalistes qui voulaient décrire la société en entier comme des artisans plutôt comme des artistes. En le faisant tous les deux utilisaient les habits des personnages dans leurs œuvres pour découvrir la société, la stratifictaion dans la société et les personnages des œuvres. Mais, malgré qu'ils veuillent travailler comme des artisans ils avaient des styles très précises et élaborés. L'approche sociocritique est la méthode pour comprendre; Comment les habits démasquent la position des personnages dans la société Comment les habits racontent l’histoire et la psychologie des personnages Comment les habits symbolisent les caractères dans un plus grand contexte littéraire / Gustave Flaubert and Guy de Maupassant were friends and realist authors who wanted to describe the totality of society as artisans rather than artists. In doing so both of them used  the way their characters dressed to discover society, the stratification in society and the characters in their literary work. However, in spite of their will to work as artisans they were stylistically prominent with styles precise and elaborated.From a socio-critical point of view this essay tries to understand: How the out-fit unveils the social position of the characters. How the out-fit unveils the story and psychology of the characters. How the out-fit symbolises the characters in a wider literary context. / Gustave Flaubert och Guy de Maupassant var vänner och realistiska författare som ville beskriva samhället i sin helhet som hantverkare snarare än konstnärer. När de gjorde det använde båda två personernas kläder för att avslöja samhället, klassuppdelningen i samhället och personernas psykologi i sina verk. Men, trots att de ville arbeta som hantverkare var båda stilistiskt framstående med varsin precis och genomarbetad stil.Från en sociokristisk synvinkel försöker denna uppsats förstå: Hur kläderna avslöjar personernas sociala ställning. Hur kläderna avslöjar personernas berättelse och psykologi. Hur kläderna symboliserar personerna i ett större litterärt sammanhang.

Bacterial diversity in the gastrointestinal tracts of four animals with different feeding habits

The animal phylogeny and feeding habits would affect the composition of gastrointestinal tract¡]GI tract¡^microbiota. GI tract microbiota plays an important role in host health and nutrient provision. In this study, we used PCR-DGGE and bacterial 16S rDNA sequencing to analyze the GI tract bacterial diversity of four animals with different feeding habits in Shou-Shan zoo, including one carnivore, one omnivore and two herbivores, in which one ruminant and one non-ruminant. The results show a great difference between GI tract bacterial diversity of the four animals. The abundance of GI tract bacterial diversity increased from carnivore, omnivore to herbivore. Comparing the similarity of the GI tract bacterial community structures of these four animals, the carnivore possessed the most different composition, to other animals, the next was the omnivore, while the two herbivores show the highest similarity to each other. Our results also indicated that the GI tract microbiota of these four different animals were very stable during the investigating period. We also found that two individuals of the same species had a very similar bacterial compositions in their GI tracts at different time point. This finding indicated that the bacterial compositions of GI tract in the four animals were affected mostly by the host phylogeny and their feeding habits. Moreover, according to bacterial 16S rDNA sequencing and idencification, results show that the Firmicutes were the dominant bacterial phyum in all four animals GI tracts, the amount of Bacteroides was much less than Firmicutes. This result might caused by the highly starch content in their feed. Large amount of carbohydrate-degrading, protein-degrading, lipid-degrading bacteria were found in all of these different animals. Fiber-degrading bacteria Fibrobacteres were identified in the GI tracts of the herbivores and omnivore, but not the carnivore, showing that GI tract microbiota plays an important role to provide nutrient and assist energy to the host.

Consumption and Leisure Externalities

Assume the model is a closed economy, and the shock is from technology progress. This research, based on a real business cycle model, explores the government¡¦s optimal taxation on consumption and labor income under the condition that representative agent¡¦s utility function has consumption externalities as well as leisure externalities. In the following, by changing the value (namely, by setting the consumption and leisure externalities parameter as either positive or negative), this research examines cyclical property of optimal taxation in terms of four situations occurred. The results indicate that, when labor income taxation in the economy is a constant, consumption externalities parameter is negative, leisure externalities parameter is positive, then the consumption taxation is countercyclical at this time; at other times the consumption taxation is procyclical. On the other hand, suppose consumption taxation is a constant, consumption externalities parameter is negative, leisure externalities parameter is positive, or both consumption and leisure externalities parameter are negative, then labor income taxation is countercyclical at this time; at other times the labor income taxation is procyclical.

With the ongoing innovation of production technology, the quality and properties of NoteBook (NB) are more advanced, and the price is getting lower. Due to the low price and the rising of Chinese consumption level, the demand of NB is progressively increasing. On the other hand, compared with other items, NB is a high unit price item. Therefore, the brand name of products becomes a factor for consideration in consumer purchases. It also leads to the consequence of NB industrial concentration. According to MIC¡¦s report, the global market share of top 5 NB brand (Acer, Hewlett Packard, Dell, Lenevo, and Toshiba) is up to 74% in 2010. Due to the circulation in information technology, NB functions and services provided by brand companies become similar. Under this condition, the discrepancy between different brand NBs is shortened. In the consumer-oriented market, only consumer satisfaction cannot create the consumer loyalty. Despite the consumer satisfaction, brand companies should consider other factors that affect the brand loyalty. The research is to discuss the factors affecting brand loyalty from the aspects of involvement, using habits, and demographic variables. In addition, statistic analysis is based on collecting questionnaires, in which the analysis includes factor analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA analysis. The research found that: 1. Consumer satisfaction still affects brand value ,and be a essential factor of brand loyalty. 2. Regarding to involvement, product pleasure will be factor between consumer satisfaction and brand loyalty; others will be not. 3. Using habit and Demographic Statistic will be factors between consumer satisfaction and brand loyalty.

The feeding habits of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) in the western Indian Ocean

The stomachs of 183 bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) were collected from three Taiwanese longline vessels operating in the western Indian Ocean during the period from April to December 2006. Their fork lengths ranged from 89 cm to 198 cm. Distinguishable prey species, belonging to 28 families, consisted mostly of fishes, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Fourteen prey items were newly recorded, among them, five families (Anoplogastridae, Bothidae, Grammicolepididae, Pinguipedidae, and Sciaenidae) were firstly recorded as the diet of bigeye tuna. Two special dietary species were found for the first time. Oplophorus gracilirostris, the dominant numerical dietary species, had not been previously recorded; however, O. typus had been recorded in the past. The other special prey species found, Macrurocyttus acanthopodus (Grammicolepididae), was not only the first record in the stomach of bigeye tuna but also the first record in the Indian Ocean. The largest body length among prey species was 655 mm for an Alepisaurus ferox. The number of prey species appeared to decrease with the increasing size of the bigeye tuna, and larger Indian bigeye tuna tended to feed on larger prey species. In the stomachs of the bigeye tuna, Oplophorus gracilirostris was the most frequently found prey species (56.8%). The three numerical most dominant prey species were Oplophorus gracilirostris (38.2%), Charybdis smithii (8.8%), and Alepisaurus ferox (3.6%). In addition, the fish prey item, Alepisaurus ferox, had the highest percentage of prey weight. The total percentage of prey weight for prey fishes is similar to that reported in previous research, but the average weight of Alepisaurus ferox is heavier than the previous report. Additionally, the percentage of prey weight for Paralepididae is lower than the results of previous studies. Moreover, the occurrence and percentage of the number of Oplophorus gracilirostris are distinctly higher than the results of previous studies. These findings indicate that the percentage of mean preys number exist seasonal effect. Alepisaurus ferox was the most numerous prey in May to July; Oplophorus gracilirostris was the most numerous prey at 200 m depth in August to October 45¢XE to east; Charybdis smithii was the most numerous prey at 50 m depth in August to October 45¢XE to west. A possible reason to explain this phenomenon is that there are strong feeding migratory behavior in bigeye tuna.

Drowning-out crystallisation of benzoic acid : Influence of processing conditions and solvent composition on crystal size and shape

<p>The aim of the present investigation is to increase theunderstanding of the role played by the solvent in inhibitingor enhancing crystal growth. Drowning-out crystallizationexperiments has been performed by the controlled addition ofwater or ethanol water mixtures to a saturated solution ofbenzoic acid in ethanol-water mixtures. Crystal habitcontrolling factors have been identified.Seededcrystallization experiments have been carried out to evaluatethe effect of solvent composition on crystal habit at constantsupersaturation. The solubility of benzoic acid inethanol-water mixtures at the working temperatures has beendetermined.</p><p>Electro-zone sensing determinations and microscopicmeasurements are used to characterize the final crystallineproduct. It has been found that the shape of the benzoic acidcrystals grown from ethanol-water solutions ranges from needlesto platelets. Platy particles possess a predominant basal plane(001), bound by (010) and (100) faces, while needles aredeveloped along the b-axis. Long needle-shaped particles havebeen produced at low initial bulk concentration and highethanol concentration in the feed. Small platelets are obtainedat high initial bulk concentrations and high waterconcentration in the feed.</p><p>The effect of solvent composition on the growth rate hasbeen evaluated at constant supersaturation. Seed crystals arecharacterized by image analysis measurement both before andafter each experiment. Length and width dimensions have beenmeasured on the particle silhouette. The growth rate, thesolid-liquid interfacial energy and the surface entropy factorfor the (010) faces (length dimension) and (100) faces (widthdimension) have been estimated. The interfacial energy andsurface entropy factor decreases in the direction of increasingethanol concentration due to increasing solubility.</p><p>The results suggest that at low ethanol concentration(xEtOH<60%) growth proceeds by screw dislocation mechanism,and adsorption of ethanol molecules may reduce the growth rate.As the ethanol concentration increases above a critical value(xEtOH ≥60%), the growth mechanism shifts to surfacenucleation and the growth rate increases with increasingethanol concentration. It has been suggested that the observedeffect of the solvent composition on crystal habit is theresult of two conflicting effects here referred as the kineticand interfacial energy effects. High interactions of the pairethanol-benzoic acid seem to be responsible of the growthretardation (kinetic effect) exerted by the solvent. Smokers with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (N=78) were randomly assigned to receive a Motivational Interviewing, Psychoeducational, or Minimal Control intervention. A greater proportion of participants receiving the Motivational Interviewing intervention followed through on a referral for tobacco dependence treatment within one-week and one-month post-intervention. Mixed model Analyses of Variance found no differences between groups at one-week or at one-month with respect to tobacco use or motivation to quit. Within group analyses indicated that participants in the Motivational Interviewing and Psychoeducational groups reported significant decreases in cigarettes smoked per day. / ABSTRACT: Only participants in the Motivational Interviewing group showed significant increases in confidence in their ability to quit smoking. / System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader. / Mode of access: World Wide Web.
