Previous issue date: 2007-09-10 / Halloween is a foreign cultural manifestation that is taking place in Brazil, mainly in schools and in business. Initially introduced by English schools and little by little it is popularizing itself in the country. Today, not only the schools commemorate the date. The commemorations are carnivalization and for carnivalization we understand as a
deviation of the cultural manifestation on the cultural fact, accordingly to the concept theorized by Bakhtin. Another important concept for this research is the multiculturalism and its relation with education. The goal of this paper is to analyze
these concepts and its applicability to the reality manifested in a school atmosphere. The research makes use of this problem and sees how this carnivalization of the commemorations occurs according to the teachers' and students perceptions in a community typically paulistana and presents the hypothesis that these celebrations start with elements peculiar to the national culture and with the process of carnivalization of other cultures. For that reason we deal with carnivalization and multiculturalism concepts related with the education specifically in schools with a juvenile public.

Identification of the Halloween Effect in Swedish SectorsLind, Oskar, Uddin, Md Rayhan January 2013 (has links)
Our thesis researches the Halloween effects in the Swedish stock market from a sector perspective. The notion Halloween effect refers to higher returns during the period November until April than the period May until October. The anomaly has been confirmed by previous researchers in Sweden among other countries. There has not been any definite explanation for this anomaly. The majority of explanations base on the assumption that the anomaly is a market wide and induced by changes in investment behavior. However, previous research has shown that the Halloween effect could be limited to certain sectors which experience significantly higher returns during winter months than the summer months. The sectors that exhibited the high Halloween effect tend to be heavy industry sectors while consumer oriented sectors tend to outperform during summer periods. In our study we research the Swedish sectors to test whether the findings of previous researches are true for other market as well. Our result indicates that the Halloween effect is present in a few sectors and not market wide. The findings thus support previous research that the Halloween effect is sector specific. The sectors that exhibited the highest Halloween effect were sectors in heavy industry.

Halloween Horror Nights And/Or Visceral TheatreBraillard, Patrick 01 January 2014 (has links)
Visceral [vis-er-uh l] -adj 1. of, relating to, or affecting the viscera 2. characterized by intuition or instinct rather than intellect ("visceral," def. 1-2) The above words speak to define far more than merely the word "visceral." They speak to also embody and classify a previously untitled form of theatre. Visceral Theatre: A form of theatre that uses the instinctual awareness of the audience- the audiences' perception of popular culture, societal contexts both historical and geographical, as well as their instinctual-physical aversion to danger- to cause physiological and emotional responses through the overstimulation of the senses in a non-tactile attack. For the past eight years I have been intimately involved with the creation of Halloween Horror Nights, an annual event held each September/October at the Universal Orlando Resort. The basis of the event is the celebration of the holiday of Halloween by creating Shows, Street Experiences, and Thematic Mazes in which to fully immerse hundreds of thousands of guests in various environments. This thesis will use the example of Halloween Horror nights to frame the discussion of Visceral Theatre. It will be presented through the lens of creator, designer, director, and collaborator of the entertainment offerings within the experience. It is my hope to answer the question: What is Visceral Theatre, and how HHN, as it is commonly referred to, earns the right to be defined as such. What makes this experience Theatre?

Weird Old Figures and a New Twist: Cultural Functions of Halloween at the Turn of the 20th CenturyWilliams, Rebecca Jean 09 June 2017 (has links)
Halloween arrived in the United States in the mid-nineteenth century with the surge in immigration from the British Isles — especially Ireland. However, the folk holiday did not gain widespread attention until the late 1870s and 1880s when descriptive pieces containing both accounts of Halloween's long history increasingly appeared in some newspapers and periodicals. Over the next couple decades, these descriptive pieces became more prescriptive, instructing women how to throw a "proper" Halloween party; what food to serve, games to play, and atmosphere to evoke. By the turn of the twentieth century and up through the 1920s, the middle-to-upper class — specifically women — adopted the holiday all across the country and characterized it with parties, decorative displays, and the propagation of literature, imagery, and ephemera.
Since Halloween had existed as an ethnic folk tradition in America for several decades, why and how did this particular group of Americans adopt — and adapt — Halloween to meet their needs? Which Halloween traditions did they retain and how did they shape the holiday for their own purposes? Finally, how did this particular celebration of Halloween reflect the interplay of certain values among these celebrants through literature, imagery, and ephemera? This study of Halloween asks what the celebration of holidays and rituals can tell us about the culture in which they are celebrated. By employing a method which gives equal weight to historical context, audience, and imagery, we gain valuable insight about the stratum of American society which made Halloween an American tradition. / Master of Arts / Until the late nineteenth century, Halloween in the United States amounted to barely anything more than a couple informational inches of column space in October newspapers. By the 1920s, however, full-page advice pieces for Halloween parties and advertisements for themed costumes, decorations, and food were not only in newspapers, but magazines and catalogs as well. Overwhelmingly thanks to white, middle-to-upper-class women, Halloween had transformed from a foreign, ethnic folk holiday of Ireland and the British Isles to an annual, widespread American tradition. These people embraced Halloween as an occasion to both celebrate the imagined simplicity of a shared ancestral past and take advantage of the modern industrial and commercial boom that would fuel the mass production of Halloween-themed goods and novelties. This thesis examines newspapers, magazines, postcards, and a line of holiday catalogs to show how the text and imagery of Halloween products successfully integrated conflicting values and secured the holiday a place in the American seasonal canon.

Wasted Pumpkins: A Real Halloween Horror StorySurucu-Balci, Ebru, Berberoglu, B. 10 March 2022 (has links)
Yes / Purpose
This study aims to understand pumpkin waste awareness among people by converting unstructured quantitative data into insightful information to understand the public's awareness of pumpkin waste during Halloween.
Design/methodology/approach
To fulfil the study's purpose, we extracted Halloween-related tweets by employing #halloween and #pumpkin hashtags and then investigated Halloween-related tweets via a topic modelling approach, specifically Latent Dirichlet Allocation. The tweets were collected from the UK between October 25th and November 7th, 2020. The analysis was completed with 11,744 tweets.
Findings
The topic modelling results revealed that people are aware of the pumpkin waste during Halloween. Furthermore, people tweet to reduce pumpkin waste by sharing recipes for using leftover pumpkins.
Originality/value
The study offers a novel approach to convert social media data into meaningful knowledge about public perception of food waste. This paper contributes to food waste literature by revealing people's awareness of pumpkin waste during Halloween using social media analytics. Norm activation model and communicative ecology theory are used for the theoretical underpinning of topic modelling.

When a calendar anomaly becomes acquaintance in the market, the reaction of investors is expected to go declining with the time. For the reject or the confirmation of this affair, in the present study, we check the existence of calendar anomalies in the output of 15 International Stock Exchange markets the last 20 years. The examined period (1988-2008) is separated in two subperiods taking into consideration the international crisis that began in the dues of 1999 in order to be checked the stability of results. The empirical results show important differentiation of results in the two examined subperiods. In any case, the segregation of indicators according to their places in the world market does not appear to attribute substantially conclusions. Specifically in the case of emerging markets, these show that they mark an autonomous movement and to be influenced more by other (internal, mainly) factors.

Are Financial Market Anomalies Real? Evidence from Stock Markets in Five Countries / Are Financial Market Anomalies Real? Evidence from Stock Markets in Five CountriesFicik, Jozef January 2014 (has links)
The financial market anomaly can be characterized as the event when observed stock returns differentiate from those expected by concrete pricing model. Many anomalies have been detected so far, and some of them vanished, while other persisted, after they had been published by academics and researchers. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the potential presence of selected types of anomalies in the financial markets and to provide relevant empirical evidence. The theoretical section will supply the reader with the descriptions of several types of financial market anomalies and the results of past studies documenting the existence of these anomalies, with possible reasons justifying the presence of this phenomenon. The analytical section will focus on the few selected anomalies and test whether they are still present in the selected financial markets.

The Halloween Effect : A trick or treat in the Swedish stock market?Benjaminsson, Oliver, Reinhold, Pontus January 2020 (has links)
The Halloween effect refers to higher stock returns during the period November to April compared to May to October. This is a well-known calendar anomaly that has gained a lot of attention due to the fact that the effect is persistent in the market in spite of the fact that investors are aware of the anomaly today. This evokes questions regarding the efficiency in the markets and the Efficient Market Hypothesis in particular. The main focus of this thesis was to investigate whether the Halloween effect still exists in the Swedish stock market and if the power of the effect deviates between different firm sizes. Furthermore, we examined risk differences between the summer -and the winter months, as well as the January effect in order to find out if these could be possible explanations for the Halloween effect and its existence. A trading strategy based on the Halloween effect was also tested in order to see if investors could use this strategy to outperform a buy and hold strategy. The method that was used to investigate the existence of the Halloween effect was Ordinary Least Squares regression models with dummy variables, standard deviation to ascertain risk-differences between the periods and the Sharpe ratio to determine the risk-adjusted returns of the trading strategies. The results showed that the Halloween effect could be found in all of the examined market-cap indices, and therefore the Efficient Market Hypothesis could be questioned. The Halloween effect turned out to be autonomous from the January effect and the risk measured in standard deviation had no significant difference between the summer -and the winter months, hence, both these possible explanations were rejected. The backtesting showed that the Halloween strategy would perform better than the buy and hold strategy in all indices except from the mid-cap index. The results regarding the Sharpe ratio indicated that the Halloween strategy would be a better strategy to use considering risk-adjusted returns as the Sharpe ratio was higher in all indices.
