Psychological Sense Of Community And Retention: Rethinking The First-year Experience Of Students In Stem

Dagley Falls, Melissa 01 January 2009 (has links)
This investigation looks at the relationship between a STEM learning community's co-curricular activities and students' perceived sense of community (SOC)to determine which activities most influence SOC and, in turn, retention. This investigation shows that SOC can be impacted by a multitude of factors found within the college environment. The most influential of these factors are open acceptance, student academic support services, and residential experiences. Most importantly there were significant differences for African American students participating in the STEM learning community on the measures of SOC, retention, and being on-track in mathematics. Additional data suggested higher levels of being on-track in mathematics for male students and differences in retention and being on-track for Hispanic students participating in a STEM learning community.

A concert hall for Pittsburgh: responding to Panther Hollow

Grimm, Ronald D. January 1990 (has links)
A building and its environment can work together to express unity and harmony. The concept behind my project stems from the specific nature of a public place and its needs. These elements, synthesized through a process of transformation and redefinition, bring the building as close as possible to its architectural reality. My thesis is that the awareness of order is achieved when an object has established a language that clarifies its existence. / Master of Architecture

Those are the five biggest country towns of brazilian state of Parana. The goal was to identify the characteristics of journalism in those News productions in order to verify how journalism is made at theses kind os workplace. Journalism is here approached to the concept of Public Communication oriented to collective interest, in order to realize about the possibilities that this kind of communication should not be for personal promotion of the cities governors. Methodological stratiges include a review of Otto Groth’s (2011) concepts of “comprehension”, “natural look” and “intuition look”. Results points to a fragile news productions which is made with irresponsability concerning to the fact that it is appearently guided to personal and private interests, not the public ones.

A Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) Framework for Certified Sustainable Higher Education (HE) Residence Halls

Alborz, Nakisa 28 July 2014 (has links)
"Numerous higher education (HE) institutions in the United States (US) have created sustainability agendas, including construction of sustainable buildings. More than 200 US HE institutions, have at least one Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building on their campus (Princeton Review 2012). With the growing student population and need to house them, residence hall construction is rising nationwide. A profile of newly constructed building types shows residence halls hold the largest median area (Princeton Review 2012). In an effort to assess if sustainable residence halls are performing sustainably, a series of post occupancy evaluation (POE) indicators were selected. POE indicators were chosen through a review of widely adopted sustainability rating systems, scientific literature and student occupant feedback. The selected indicators address a range of parameters including: water and energy consumption, occupant thermal comfort, occupant consumption behavior and education, noise insulation (indoor and outdoor), and Facilities Management (FM) operational feedback. Furthermore, specific indicators such as building energy management systems (BEMS), building automation control systems (BACS) and artificial intelligence (AI) agents were examined. The proposed POE indicator framework data was collected from various key stakeholders including: designers, HE FM departments, residential life personnel, and student occupants. The dataset includes: actual temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) measurements of a LEED-Gold residence hall, actual water (9 residence halls) and energy consumption (4 residence halls) data, and feedback from designers, HE FM departments and 593 student occupants (LEED and non-LEED residence halls). The proposed POE indicator framework triangulates quantitative and qualitative data, via investigative and diagnostic techniques; creating a comprehensive building performance picture, vis-à-vis technical and non-technical parameters."
