Predicting Indoor Carbon Dioxide Concentration using Online Machine Learning : Adaptive ventilation control for exhibition halls

Carlsson, Filip, Egerhag, Edvin January 2022 (has links)
A problem that exhibition halls have is the balance between having good indoor air quality andminimizing energy waste due to the naturally slow decrease of CO2 concentration, which causes Heat-ing, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning systems to keep ventilating empty halls when occupants have leftthe vicinity. Several studies have been made on the topic of CO2 prediction and occupancy predictionbased on CO2 for smaller spaces such as offices and schools. However, few studies have been madefor bigger venues where a larger group of people gather. An online machine learning model using theRiver library was developed to tackle this problem by predicting the CO2 ahead of time. Five datasetswere used for training and predicting, three with real data and two with simulated data. The resultsfrom this model was compared with three already developed traditional models in order to evaluate theperformance of an online machine learning model compared to traditional models. The online machinelearning model was successful in predicting CO2 one hour ahead of time considerably faster than thetraditional models, achieving a r2 score of up to 0.95.

Ungdomars åsikter om kroppsideal i media : en enkätundersökning bland gymnasieelever

Sörensen, Viktoria January 2016 (has links)
Dominating body ideal is changing over time and are related to community’s norms, attitudes and culture. The ideal that dominated longest for females is slenderness ideal and for the males, the muscular body ideal. Today spreads the image of the "perfect" body faster than ever before and through the media reaches out to more people. Young adolescents are a particularly vulnerable target group for the exposure of dominating body ideal. The normative body ideals is now linked to the increasing of mental illness among young people whose symptoms include; depression, anxiety and eating disorders. As a result of a change of attitude in society, a new phenomenon has become gradually common. The phenomenon is pictures that shows up bodies that varies in size and appearance. Although some companies have begun to make use of this new phenomenon, to make up with unattainable body ideals. The aim of the study was to explore high school students' opinions about the new phenomenon, to investigate whether it can possibly be used as a health-insert. A web-based questionnaire study was conducted in which 28 high school students responded. The results showed that the majority of the respondents had a positive attitude to images of "everyday bodies." The study last showed that the media can be used as an arena to send out health promotion messages. The result also showed the importance of the senders of the message encodes the message meaningful and presents it in a way so that the intended audience can understand the health message.

Church expansion through church planting in Ghana : a case study of the Lighthouse Chapel International Model / Emmanuel Louis Nterful

Nterful, Emmanuel Louis January 2013 (has links)
Jesus Christ instructed His disciples before His death to limit the preaching of the gospel to the ‘lost sheep of the house of Israel’ (Matt 10:6). After His resurrection, however, He broadened the scope of proselytizing to all: “Make disciples of all nations” (Matt 28:18-20). This meant that the gospel should be preached everywhere and to all peoples. This mandate has come to be known by Christians as the Great Commission. Since the 1970s a new wave of churches, commonly referred to as the charismatic churches, have come to be firmly established on the religious landscape of Ghana, West Africa. One of the most prominent is the Lighthouse Chapel International (LCI). Headquartered in Accra, the LCI is a large worldwide denomination that aggressively employs the agency of church planting in its attempt to facilitate the fulfilment of the Great Commission. This study enquires into the church planting activities of the Lighthouse Chapel International with the aim of documenting the processes, principles and strategies underlying the denomination’s mission. It is hoped that this empirical analysis of the LCI will benefit newer struggling churches, particularly those within the charismatic tradition,in their efforts to spread the gospel of Christ, while providing a new self-understanding that will carry the LCIitself into the future. The study employs a qualitative methodology through the review of some relevant literature, interviews with key informants (LCI ministers, non-LCI charismatic leaders, andnon-LCI leaders conversant with the LCI church planting model), together with collated views from focus group discussions and the results of a qualitative questionnaire. The literature review on the LCI relies primarily on the sermons and writings of Heward-Mills, the founder of the denomination, which have informed the strategies and other processes in the church’s missionary work and advancement. The study reveals that, overall, the LCI’s mission strategies, including the focused emphasis on church planting, lay ministry, administrative support systems, and use of permanent church halls, have combined to create a productive and robust church planting model in Ghana. The study concludes that the fulfilment of the Great Commission must be the main preoccupation of the charismatic churches in Ghana, and that the foremost strategy for achieving this is church planting. The study recommends the development of a wellthought-out biblical and theologically based mission strategy. Church planting will be enhanced by more effective use of lay people, appropriate attention to a doctrine of loyalty, efficient administrative support systems and the building of permanent church halls. Each network of churches ought also to appoint a missions department with a named director to ensure that the missional aspect of the work of the Christian church in Ghanaremains central in its planning and activities. / MA (Missiology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus in co-operation with Greenwich School of Theology, UK, 2014

Os espaços para a música contemporânea / The spaces of musical performance

Pita, Juliano Veraldo da Costa 17 May 2012 (has links)
This paper proposes an investigation into the spaces of musical performance and its relationship with the music presented on these, with special focus on contemporary classical music. This proposal is justified from the verification of a dichotomy between the architectural design of these spaces, and the music that presented on them in a repertoire of mostly consolidated in the late nineteenth century. This dissociation is particularly interesting given that, until the advent of modern vanguards of the beginning of the twentieth century, music and performance spaces formed a group in line with your time. From this investigation, some examples of spaces facing the contemporary music and its unique characteristics were analyzed, and considerations about the current state of these, drawn. The approach chosen, however, was not the description and analysis from the architectural, technical or social point of view; it was decided by an investigation that relates the development of music itself and its relationship with the space where it is played as how to strengthen this link and identify the points of intersection between the two disciplines. To do so, the work began with some examples of recently built concert halls in the Brazilian context: The Sala São Paulo (1999) and the Auditório Ibirapuera (2005), followed with an investigation of the music commonly presented in these. From the verification of this music, it was sought to characterize the momentum of architectural auditorium, with regard to spatial organization and social setting of these. Two spaces were taken as example, the Palais Garnier (1875) in Paris and the Festspielhaus (1876) in Bayreuth, because they represent, each in its way, one facet of this type. Finally there was a comparison between the music presented in these spaces and contemporary music, which reinforces the dichotomy observed and preliminarily identifying the beginning of the twentieth century as the moment of transformation of the direct relationship between architecture and music. To prove this claim, was held a retrospective of where music had preeminent importance, and in parallel, we tried to address their own concepts of music and architecture, seeking to create elements for understanding the work of musicians and architects. These concepts are essential to understanding not only of these spaces, but also of general relations between different aspects of social life of his time, of crucial importance for understanding the dimension of rupture reported. Through this review, sometwhat descriptive and linear, reflections of the reasons for the changing of the relationship between architecture and music in Modernism, and the consequences of this fact to both disciplines were made. It was also discussed aspects of contemporary music and architecture in places where it was sought an integration. Finally, the conclusions sought, from interviews with professionals and specialized literature of both disciplines, to reflect on the future of this relationship and the role of the architect in producing spaces for contemporary music. It is noteworthy that the literature that addresses this relationship is extremely scarce; this work, therefore, adopted a more general profile and broad spec- trum, rather than a specific point on a specificity of this relationship, as the beginning of a attempt to fill this void of literature.

Biophilic Design at Pomona College: An Analysis of the New Sontag and Pomona Residence Halls

Hasse, John W 01 May 2012 (has links)
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction (or LEED-NC) has become one of the most commonly used green building standards during the turn of the 21st century. While many champion LEED-NC, certain architects and academics believe that its low-environmental impact design approach toward green building isolates people from nature and thus cannot achieve sustainable development over the long-term. Pomona College’s green buildings, including its newest LEED Platinum certified Sontag and Pomona Residence Halls, exemplify this fact, as their designs fail to communicate their sustainable goals or inspire sustainable behavior. By examining the LEED-NC standards, the history of environmental conservation, Modern architecture, biophilia, and the Living Building Challenge, this thesis seeks to provide recommendations for how Pomona College can alter its existing green buildings as well as improve its green building policies for future projects so that its built environment better fosters positive human-nature interactions.

A method to predict reverberation time in concert hall preliminary design stage

Zhang, Yan 04 October 2005 (has links)
A historical review is performed to study the impact of acoustical knowledge on concert hall developments. It shows that although acoustics developed from myth to real science, there is still a gap between its fast growing knowledge and relatively slow applications to improve designs. Architectural acoustics research and education shall help populating the tacit knowledge and experience of acousticians to reduce the gap between design and knowledge. The established paradigm in this field is to identify the performance goals of concert halls, recognize the available design information in different stages, and establish models to link them together. Placed in this general picture, this thesis focuses on providing design support for preliminary stage. It develops a model to link accessible design features with the most important acoustics performance index, reverberation time. A literature review on exiting reverberation time prediction methods shows that they are based on either too demanding or over-simplified for this stage. This study intends to develop a model that makes maximum use of available information and improves prediction accuracy in comparison with existing simplified methods. Through literature survey and data analysis, three factors (geometrical shape, non-uniform material distribution and scattering effect) are recognized as significant for reverberation time prediction. This thesis developed a simplified model taking these factors into consideration and calibrated this model with empirical data through Bayesian statistical method.
