Inclusive Choirs: Welcoming Youth with Exceptionalities

2013 July 1900 (has links)
This basic interpretive qualitative study investigated the benefits and challenges of inclusive choir singing for youth with exceptionalities. Fourteen participants were recruited for this study including youth choir members with exceptionalities, parents, family members (e.g., siblings), choir directors, and a choir manager. Participant observation and semi-structured interviews were used to generate data. The study findings included four main overarching themes: health benefits, positive aspects, challenges, and inclusive choir singing as different than other activities. The current study’s findings have contributed to furthering research in the area of singing and health, and have several implications for both practice and future research in the area.

Season For Health: A Guide For Using Herbs and Spices For Your Home Cooking

Hongu, Nobuko, Farr, Kiah J., Nakagomi, Yuri 10 1900 (has links)
8 pp. / Studies have demonstrated the health benefits of herbs and spices from antioxidant capacity, anti-inflammatory properties, and cancer-preventative or cancer-fighting properties. Additionally, herbs and spices are beneficial to reducing salt and fat intake by providing an alternative method for flavoring food. The addition or increase of herbs and spices in a regular diet may increase consumption of vegetables. This article explains the definitions of herbs and spices, as well as the positive health benefits associated with both. This article also outlines how to find and incorporate many herbs and spices available to Arizonans and the surrounding community into everyday diet, while including the affordability of each.

Pre-harvest effects on postharvest quality of spring-planted, day-neutral strawberries in high tunnel system

Gude, Kelly January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources / Eleni Pliakoni / Intensive specialty crop production within high tunnel systems in the central U.S. has greatly expanded. High tunnel systems, used primarily to protect specialty crops from harsh environmental conditions, improve marketability, and extend fruiting season. High tunnel day-neutral strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) production in Kansas may by limited due to the high summer temperatures. Evaporative cooling within a high tunnel is a novel technique meant to cool the plant temperature during the hottest months of production. Currently, evaporative cooling is implemented in the early stages during the heavy bloom period. Spring-planted day-neutral strawberry production within high tunnels could provide growers with enhanced yields and marketability, improved storage quality, and late-season prices. This study identifies the optimum cultivars in a plasticulture, high tunnel system with the use of evaporative cooling in regards to yield, quality, storage life, and consumer opinion. The trial was conducted at the Kansas State University Olathe Horticulture Research and Extension Center (OHREC) during 2014 and 2015. Six commercially-available cultivars were evaluated: ‘Albion’, ‘Evie 2’, ‘Monterey’, ‘Portola’, ‘San Andreas’, and ‘Seascape’. Mature fruit (90-100% red) were harvested twice a week and four harvests were evaluated for at harvest and postharvest quality throughout each production year. Storage life was monitored every 24hrs by respiration rate, moisture content and overall visual quality, using a scale from 5 (excellent) to 1 (very poor). Physical and organoleptic quality measurements (texture and color, and soluble solids and titratable acidity) were evaluated every two days throughout storage, and nutritional quality (total phenolic and antioxidant availability) was evaluated at harvest. Our results indicate that ‘Portola’ had the highest yields in 2014 and 2015 at 1.33 lbs/plant and 1.12 lbs/plant, respectively. At harvest, the soluble solids content (°Brix) was highest with ‘Monterey’ and ‘Albion’ (P < 0.0001), while ‘San Andreas’, ‘Monterey’, ‘Portola’, and ‘Albion’ retained firm texture (force(g)) (P ≤ 0.0001). All cultivars maintained their overall visual quality until day 8, with the exception of ‘Evie 2’ and ‘Seascape’. Furthermore, the four cultivars maintained visual quality and had lower respiration rates and moisture content loss (P < 0.001, P < 0.0001, P < 0.05). Throughout storage, ‘Seascape’ had a high respiration rate (P < 0.0001) and low overall visual quality (P < 0.01). Moisture content loss (%) throughout 2014 storage life was less than in 2015 (P < 0.0001) and ‘San Andreas’ and ‘Monterey’ had the least moisture loss throughout both production seasons (P < 0.01). In our trials, evaporative cooling did not affect yield or the incidence of disease. However, the use of evaporative cooling resulted in lower total phenolic levels in both production years (P < 0.0001), and higher respiration rates during storage, as observed in 2015 (P ≤ 0.01). Because of significant year-to-year differences in berry weight (lbs/plant) and size (oz/fruit), further studies are needed to identify the weather effect and best management practices in the region. In Kansas, growing day-neutral strawberries in a high tunnel has potential based on yield and quality of the fruit that we evaluated.

South African consumers' perception of soy and soy products / Naómi Harmse

Harmse, Naómi January 2005 (has links)
Food that provides health benefits beyond basic nutrition, by virtue of physiologically active food components are known as functional foods. Soybeans contain some of these phytochemical components such as isoflavones. Due to the lack of relevant data, the aim of this study was to assess South African consumers' perceptions towards soy and soy products. Respondents (n=3001) were randomly selected from 9 metropolitan as well as rural areas in South Africa. The questionnaire consisted of 17 food related topics. Four of these sections (which were also used in this study) probed information on soy and soy products. The data of 81 % respondents (n=2437), who were aware of soy, were used for further statistical analyses. There were no practical significant differences between rural and metropolitan respondents' perceptions regarding each statement. Large practical significant differences were found between racial groups regarding most of the statements. In general Blacks were more positive towards the use and taste of soy, as opposed to Whites. More Indians were aware of meat substitutes made from soy than the other racial groups. Marketing efforts in South Africa should focus on those groups that like the taste of soy best and who would consume soy regularly. / Thesis (M. (Consumer Science))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

How can we improve the health related quality of life in people with psoriasis?

Rydningen, Lene January 2015 (has links)
Between 250.000 and 300.000 people live with psoriasis in Sweden today. 50% develop psoriasis before they are 25 years old. When living with psoriasis, one have an increased risk of developing comorbidities, which include overweight, joint problems, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases and depression, among others. Based on recent findings, people living with psoriasis can achieve health benefits and improve the symptoms of the condition through living and good life style. I have developed a lifestyle system named "núna", which will empower the patient, encourage a good lifestyle, prevent comorbidities and improve the healthcare personnel and patient communication. The system includes an application which consists of five different main categories (Activity, diet, quit smoking, photography documentation and administrating issues related to ones healthcare providers), and an activity tracker with two different portable docks and a charging station.

Working Baby Boomers’ Knowledge of Retiree Health Benefits and Costs

Henning, Janet L. 08 1900 (has links)
This study was exploratory in nature, with the purpose of examining the relationships between working Baby Boomers’ knowledge of retirement health benefits and health costs and actions they have taken to prepare for retirement. An online survey was completed by 209 Baby Boomers who are employed by three city governments in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The research showed that health benefits knowledge does not predict retirement preparation but that Baby Boomers who demonstrate higher levels of knowledge-seeking behavior are more likely to undertake retirement preparation, specifically by purchasing an annuity. Among public sector working Baby Boomers, retirement preparation activities are found to be minimal. Age was found to predict knowledge-seeking behavior, in that older vs. younger Baby Boomers are more likely to engage in knowledge-seeking behavior related to retirement preparation. Current knowledge about health benefits does not predict retirement preparation.

Arquitectura Empresarial para el proceso de compra de prestaciones de salud / Enterprise Architecture for the purchase process of Health benefits in Essalud

Guerrero Guerrero, Jean Marco, Tupia Vidal, Francisco Alberto 10 June 2019 (has links)
The current project comes through a necessity, which is to make a design model of the Enterprise Architecture Process Purchase benefits for the state company ESSALUD, in order to be able to cover the inconsistencies between processes, users, stakeholders, etc., the same that cause loss of resources, time, as well as directly affect the reputation and reliability of the company. Also, there is a need to expand the coverage of health services offered in terms of a number of financial and political restrictions imposed by the government. In this way, thanks to the development of the enterprise architecture for the process of buying health services in EsSalud, costs, expenses and time of use can be optimized and reduced at the health entity. Don’t make a change in this procedure generates not only a trouble in the general procedure, so it is not only internally affecting the staff, also affects to society, since there is a very high percentage of people that doesn’t like the service offered. For this, it is necessary that the processes that are used should be correctly define, as well as their inputs, the internal flow and outputs, this can generate that the numbers and the statistics match the annual balance that is made for the budgets regulatory entities. / Tesis

Den självskattade hälsan hos anställda på industriföretag, i relation till användandet av hälsofrämjande förmåner. / The self-rated health of employees in industrial enterprises, in relation to the use of health benefits.

Johansson, Emeli, Arnells, Malin January 2010 (has links)

This cross-sectional study investigated the use of health benefits in relation to the self-rated health of employees at two medium-sized industrial enterprises in Hälsingland. The method used to investigate this was through a self-designed questionnaire consisting 19 questions about health, lifestyle and health benefits at the workplace. A total of 100 questionnaires were distributed in the two companies, hence 50 surveys at each workplace. The response rate was measured to 88 % and 74 %, which means a loss of 6 persons and 13 persons. The results showed that Company nr 1 offers its employees a health benefits consisting of free access to gym in the company premises after working hours and financial contributions to training-cards. These benefits are used regularly by 29% of respondents. Company nr 2 currently offered no health benefits for their employees. The results also showed that 66% of the respondents at Company nr 1 rated their physical health as Excellent or Good and 79% consider their mental health as Excellent or Good. At Company nr 2, 65 % of the participants responded that they consider their physical health as Excellent or Good and 84% consider their mental health as Excellent or Good. The study also found that more than half of the participants in the two companies had a BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than 26. The conclusion from this is that the health benefits offered at Company nr 1 is used sparingly and that more than half of the participants at both companies consider their physical and mental health as Excellent or Good.
