This makes employees an important asset of a small business because its success depends on the performance of its employees. Employee wellness practices in small medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) often focus on the physical aspects of wellbeing, despite employees wanting management to focus on their emotional needs. In view of the fact that employers do not realise that employee wellness significantly improves morale and increases retention rates, this research sought to explore the employee wellness experiences of managers and employees in SMMEs to develop an understanding of the need for employee wellness practices in these organisations. Accordingly, a qualitative study was conducted among 17 employees and four managers at three diverse industries operating in the Gauteng region of South Africa. The data were collected by means of focus groups interviews with employees and individual interviews with managers who work in SMMEs that employ less than 50 employees. The results indicated that employees consider employee wellness in terms of how well organisations treat them and take care of them. The findings demonstrated that employees depend on good working relationships to be happy and engaged in the workplace. Although management cited various financial and human resource constraints that limit employee wellness practices, the employees identified various activities and practices that were not dependent on financial resources for implementation. The results also showed there was insufficient evidence to support the notion that there is a link between unhealthy workplace conditions and higher absenteeism and staff turnover rates. The findings highlighted that employees need social interaction in order to feel valued and cared for and that this factor often outweighs the negative feelings employees have of working in unhealthy environments. Thus, employees were willing to work in unhealthy conditions as long as they felt valued by top management. The findings of the study contribute to the knowledge in the literature on employee wellness practices in SMMEs because limited studies have been conducted to demonstrate the impact of workplace conditions on employee wellness. / Klein ondernemings floreer wanneer werknemers gelukkig, gesond en produktief is. Werknemerwelstandpraktyke in klein-, medium- en mikro-ondernemings (KMMO’s) fokus dikwels op die fisieke aspekte van welstand, ten spyte daarvan dat werknemers wil hê bestuur moet op hul emosionele behoeftes fokus. In die lig daarvan dat werkgewers nie besef dat werknemerwelstand moraal en behoudsyfers aansienlik verbeter nie, het hierdie navorsing gepoog om die werknemerwelstand-ondervindinge van bestuurders en werknemers in KMMO’s te ondersoek om ‘n begrip van die behoefte aan werknemerwelstand-praktyke in hierdie ondernemings te ontwikkel. Ooreenkomstig hiermee is ‘n kwalitatiewe studie onderneem onder 17 werknemers en vier bestuurders by drie diverse industrieë wat in die Gauteng-omgewing in Suid-Afrika sake doen. Die data is versamel deur middel van fokusgroeponderhoude met werknemers en individuele onderhoude met bestuurders wat by KMMO’s met minder as 50 werknemers werk. Die bevindinge toon dat werknemers werknemerwelstand beoordeel volgens hoe goed organisasies hulle behandel en na hulle omsien. Die bevindinge het uitgewys dat werknemers staatmaak op goeie werksverhoudings om gelukkig en betrokke te wees in die werkplek. Hoewel bestuur verskeie finansiële en menslike hulpbron-beperkings uitgewys het wat werknemerwelstandpraktyke beperk, het die werknemers verskeie aktiwiteite en praktyke geïdentifiseer wat onafhanklik van finansiële hulpbronne geïmplementeer kan word. Die studie het ook bevind dat daar nie genoegsame bewyse is om die idee te staaf dat daar ‘n verband is tussen ongesonde werkplekomstandighede en ‘n hoër afwesigheidsyfer en personeelomset nie. Die bevindinge lig dit uit dat werknemers sosiale interaksie nodig het om gewaardeerd en na omgesien te voel en dat hierdie faktor dikwels swaarder weeg as die negatiewe gevoelens wat werknemers in ‘n ongesonde werkomgewing ervaar. Werknemers is dus bereid om in ongesonde omstandighede te werk solank hulle gewaardeerd voel deur topbestuur. This thesis investigated the education support services provided by occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Changes in the education policy in South Africa to an inclusive education system have major implications for the way therapists provide support. Therapists have been challenged to move from a medical model of support with a focus on highly specialised treatment for a small number of individual learners with disabilities, to a system, including all learners, teachers and parents. The aim of this research was to develop an appropriate and integrated approach for therapists to support schools within an inclusive and health promoting schools framework in South Africa.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the management of the HIV and AIDS workplace policy at Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). This entailed an assessment of the levels of awareness amongst employees, and an assessment of employees’ knowledge of the policy and its implementation. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to randomly selected employees. It was found that the respondents’ level of awareness of the HIV and AIDS workplace policy at Stats SA was satisfactory. Although some differences were observed, overall it seems that Stats SA was successful in promoting general awareness of its policy and its contents. The majority of black South Africans utilize the services of indigenous healers and the new
National
Health Plan for South Africa makes provision for cooperation between the healers and formal health
practitioners.
The purpose of this study was to determine the role played by indigenous African healers in the
prevention of diseases and the promotion of health, and to design a model which will provide
guidelines for cooperation between indigenous healers and formal health workers.
This study was ethno-medical, contextual, exploratory and qualitative. It was designed to look
into the health care of a specific cultural group to explore in depth the experiences of indigenous
healers in providing health care within their cultural context.
Data was collected by individual free-type interviews from indigenous African healers, users of
formal health services and by observation.
It was found that there is dual utilization of both formal and indigenous health service systems by
clients. A specific culbrral terminology relating to health was found to be used. Such terminology
could result in communication gaps and breakdowns if not known to or used by formal health workers.
The findings show that cultural beliefs are still strongly adhered to. These were found to
influence
the life-styles and health maintenance behaviour of a cultural group. The fmdings show that
divination
fonns the core of health assessment and health-problem diagnosis. It was found that no health
problem could be attended to without first going through a divination session.
The findings also show involvement of indigenous healers in primary health care workers at first
contact levels of prevention in the field of paediatric preventive care. Diarrhoea and vomiting in
children was found to be the preventable disease in which healers specialize. Infertility and
impotence were found to be conditions taken to healers for treatment. Other sexually transmitted
diseases as well as culture-bound syndromes treated by indigenous healers were found in this study.
The use of rituals and rites of passage and the involvement of ancestors were found to form part
ofholistic health care.
The fmdings show the willingness of healers to collaborate with formal health workers. A model is

development of sexually transmitted diseases is crucial in the HIV I AIDS epidemic era.
An explorative descriptive survey was conducted among adolescents in the age group 14 to
19 years attending sexually transmitted disease services in the Vaal Region clinics.
The purpose of the study was to explore the sexual behaviours of the adolescents and the
impact the life style health education programme had on their sexual practices.
Of the 89 respondents who attended the sexually transmitted disease clinic more than half
were found to be engaging in sexual intercourse on a weekly basis. The study further
revealed that the adolescents lacked in-depth information on sex and sexuality and expressed
the need for change in the implementation of the adolescent life style health education

Text in English / Health Communication Campaigns are one of the strategies used in facing the challenges of the spread and effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which is not only a health issue but also has sociocultural implications and consequences. Although there are some models and research tools available to guide the planning, designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of health communication campaigns, the premise of the study was on two assumptions. First, most available models that guide the planning and execution of HIV/AIDS communication campaigns do not sufficiently highlight sociocultural variables; and second, since most available models do not sufficiently emphasise sociocultural variables, the design of the instruments for the assessment of the campaigns are not sufficiently geared towards identifying and assessing sociocultural variables of the campaigns. In light of these assumptions, the study was undertaken for three reasons. Firstly, to construct a sociocultural health communication campaign conceptual model that incorporates and highlights sociocultural variables to guide the planning and implementation of health communication campaigns; particularly HIV/AIDS communication campaigns. Secondly to develop an assessment instrument for assessing the presence or absence of sociocultural variables in the planning and implementation of health communication campaigns. Thirdly to test the theoretical sociocultural assessment instrument developed in the study in an HIV/AIDS communication campaign of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s HIV/AIDS Unit. The results indicated that the instrument is a functional sociocultural assessment tool that can be used to determine three main aspects. Firstly, whether or not and at what level there is/or was active involvement and participation of the target audience in the communication campaigns process. Secondly, whether or not and at what level in the planning and execution of a campaign, the sociocultural context was taken into consideration and the relevant elements of such context incorporated in the campaign process. Thirdly, whether or not and at what level relevant theories/models underpinned the whole process of the health communication campaigns in the planning, designing, implementation, monitoring and evaluation stages. The sociocultural assessment instrument, therefore, is not meant for assessing the effectiveness of health communication campaigns per se. It is rather meant for use to ascertain the presence or absence of those three aspects on the assumption that if they are taking care of in the planning and implementation of such campaigns, the probability is that the campaigns would be more socioculturally appropriate. The implications of this study are that for health communication campaigns to be socioculturally appropriate, they display continuous community interactivity and participative (ensuring mutual relationship between campaign planners and target audience) in their planning, implementation and evaluation/assessment; making the whole campaign process strategic and integrative – their management should be strategic, implementation creative and monitoring and evaluation continuous. / Communication Science / D. Maatskaplike dienslewering gaan gewoonlik gepaard met organisasieverwante eise wat ‘n negatiewe uitwerking op die maatskaplike werker sowel as die kwaliteit van dienslewering kan hê indien dit nie vroegtydig geïdentifiseer en voorkom word nie (Werner, 2007:320). Ten spyte van die feit dat maatskaplike werk as een van die mees stresvolle beroepe beskryf word, het organisasieverwante stres binne die maatskaplike diensveld eers in die laaste paar jaar aandag begin geniet (Dillenburger, 2004:213). In die literatuur word daar na drie vlakke van intervensie verwys, naamlik primêre, sekondêre en tersiêre intervensie (Departement van Arbeid, 2003:14; Cooper, Dewe & O’Driscoll, 2001:189). Sekondêre en tersiêre intervensies word as die mees algemene strategieë vir die bestuur van stres in ‘n organisasie geïdentifiseer (Cooper et al., 2001:190; Grobler, Wärnich, Carrell, Elbert & Hatfield, 2002:441). Kritiek op die genoemde vlakke van intervensie sluit in dat die verantwoordelikheid op die maatskaplike werker alleen geplaas word om sy/haar stres te hanteer. Primêre intervensie behels dat die oorsprong van die probleem voorkom word, in plaas daarvan dat die simptome behandel word nadat dit reeds voorgekom het (Satcher, 1999). Hierdie navorsingstudie plaas die fokus op die primêre-intervensiestrategie, nadat daar ‘n leemte in die literatuur in hierdie verband geïdentifseer was. Die doel van die navorsing was om die aard van voorkoming van organisasieverwante stres onder maatskaplike werkers, deur middel van primêre-intervensiestrategieë deur maatskaplikewerkbestuurders, te verken en te beskryf ten einde ‘n voorkomingsriglyn te ontwikkel.
Ten einde die navorsingsdoel te kon bereik is die kwalitatiewe navorsingsbenadering in hierdie studie gebruik, aangesien dit die mees geskikte wyse sou wees om die verkennende en beskrywende aard van die studie te ondersteun (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2007:12). Die populasies vir hierdie kwalitatiewe studie was:
• Alle maatskaplikewerkbestuurders wat by regerings- of nie-regeringsorganisasies werksaam is.
• Alle maatskaplike werkers wat by regerings- of nie-regeringsorganisasies werksaam is.
Binne die raamwerk van die kwalitatiewe navorsingsbenadering is daar van ‘n nie-waarskynlikheidsteekproefmetode en die doelgerigte en sneeubal steekproeftegnieke gebruik gemaak. Die navorser wou gebruik maak van haar eie oordeel oor wie die navorsingsvraag die beste sou kon beantwoord. Die steekproefgrootte was bepaal deur data-versadiging wat waargeneem was na nege onderhoude met maatskaplike werkers en nege onderhoude met maatskaplikewerkbestuurders.
Die navorser het by beide populasies semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude as die metode van data-insameling benut. Tesch soos aangehaal in Creswell (2009:186), se agt stappe vir kwalitatiewe data-analise het die navorser ondersteun om die data op ‘n sistematiese wyse tot temas en sub-temas te kodeer. Die data is na afloop van die identifisering van die temas en sub-temas beskryf en gekontroleer met bestaande literatuur. Guba het (in Krefting, 1991:214-222) ‘n model saamgestel om met die verifikasie van kwalitatiewe data te help. Hierdie model is op die volgende vier aspekte gegrond en in hierdie studie benut: geldigheid van die waarheid, toepasbaarheid, bestendigheid en neutraliteit.
Die volgende etiese aspekte is tydens die beplanning en uitvoering van hierdie studie in ag geneem: Vermyding van skade; vrywillige deelname; ingeligte toestemming en anonimiteit en konfidensialiteit.
Die benutting van bovermelde metodologie het die navorser in staat gestel om voorkomingsriglyne te ontwerp en om gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings te maak. / The goal of this research was to explore and describe the nature of prevention of organisation-related stress among social workers through primary intervention strategies by social work managers to develop a prevention guideline. The qualitative research approach, together with the case study, contextual, explorative and descriptive research designs were used in the study. The two populations included a) all social work managers and b) all social workers that work for government or non-government organisations. Samples from the populations were obtained through the non-probability sampling method and the purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Tesch’s framework for qualitative research analysis supported the researcher to identify themes and sub-themes, while Guba’s model was used to assist with the verification of qualitative data. The education, training and developmental support for employees with disabilities : a wellness perspectiveVan Niekerk, Zelna 11 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the education, training, and developmental support offered to
employees with disabilities, the contribution thereof to their wellness, and the support
needed to further improve their wellness. The Bio-psycho-social Model of Disability and
the Six-dimensional Model of Wellness were used as the theoretical lenses to better
understand disability and wellness. The aim was to answer the research question, “What
kind of education, training, and developmental support is offered to employees with
disabilities in organisations?”
Within the interpretivist paradigm, the researcher used qualitative research to better
understand the wellness experiences and developmental needs of employees with
disabilities. Twelve participants were identified with the assistance of organisational
representatives as part of snowball sampling, before the researcher conducted semistructured interviews with each. The researcher and an independent co-coder then
analysed the data, using content analysis.
The study revealed that participants described mostly positive experiences on all six
wellness dimensions, but they considered the education, training, and developmental
support provided insufficient on most of the dimensions. They indicated that, to improve
their wellness, their employers need to offer disability-specific education, training, and
developmental support to all stakeholders including colleagues, managers and
community members. This stressed the need for a wellness framework that includes the
education, training, and developmental needs unique to disability.
The Wellness Framework for Employees with Disabilities proposed as a result of this
study indicates the participants’ personal and work-related developmental needs, as well
as the organisational and community development they feel will contribute to their
wellness. This support should also empower employees with disabilities to become
change champions for disability, to drive disability awareness, and, with organisational
support, change and ensure the implementation of relevant public policies.
The study was limited by the availability of research on disability, and further research to
evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed wellness framework and the disability-related
public policy developed since 2014 is suggested. Future studies could also investigate
other wellness variables, to holistically understand the wellness of persons, specifically

Abstracts in English and Southern Sotho / Affordable and accessible preventive health programmes within the South African Police Service (SAPS) could be the best measures for managing epidemic diseases in the organisation. Employee health and wellness (EHW) programmes, including those dealing with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), are often the subjects of debate among scholars and human resource management practitioners within the context of developing effective and efficient interventions in the workplace to enhance the health management of employees. This study explores the nature and extent of the employee wellness programmes that focus on HIV/AIDS in the SAPS. In particular, the research examines how EHW practitioners in the SAPS experience the programmes and what support they receive regarding HIV/AIDS in the workplace.
Data were collected from six EHW practitioners using semi-structured interviews. The study finds that HIV/AIDS programmes are categorised into different interventions, each with advantages and purpose. The findings will help determine if the HIV/AIDS programmes effectively cater to the health needs of employees within the SAPS.
