Procura se estabelecer como a característica nasceu em sua filmografia e como evoluiu ao longo das cinco décadas de sua atividade como cineasta. Relacionam-se os processos da inserção de Werner Herzog em seus filmes com a teoria, própria do campo do Cinema Documentário, referente à inserção do sujeito-da-câmera na narrativa fílmica. Tomando como ponto de partida as reflexões surgidas no final da década de 1950 acerca da participação do cineasta na narrativa (Cinema Vérité) até as teorias de uma narrativa documentária profundamente voltada para o universo do próprio cineasta, popularizadas nos anos 1980, pode-se dizer que a autorreflexão do cineasta na narrativa é uma questão viva no campo teórico do Cinema Documentário e que é constantemente problematizada e renovada na produção documentária contemporânea / Abstract: This work intends to analyse german filmmaker's Werner Herzog documentary ouevre, under the optics of the director's voice and body self-reflexion in his documentaries and the relationship between Herzog and his narratives in each work. It tries to establish how this characteristic was born in his filmography and how it has evolved through five decades of his activity as a film director. Herzog's participation in his films is related to theories of Documentary Film concerning the reflexivity of the author in the filmic narrative. Going from questions arised in the late 1950's about the participation of the director in the documentary (Cinema Vérité) to questions related to a profoundly self-referrent documentary narrative popularized in the 1980's, one can say that self-reflection is a subject-matter that is still alive in documentary film theory, being constantly problematized and renewed in contemporary documentary production / Mestrado / Mestre em Multimeios

"Archiv" ist bei Foucault der Titel für eine historische Größe der Wissensgeschichte, die unter bestimmten Bedingungen der Sagbarkeit zustande kommt und diese zugleich wirksam macht: "Das Archiv ist zunächst das Gesetz dessen, was gesagt werden kann, das System, das das Erscheinen der Aussagen als einzelner Ereignisse beherrscht. Aber das Archiv ist auch das, was bewirkt, daß all diese gesagten Dinge sich nicht bis ins Unendliche in einer amorphen Vielfalt anhäufen, sich auch nicht in eine bruchlose Linearität einschreiben und nicht allein schon bei zufälligen äußeren Umständen verschwinden; sondern daß sie sich in distinkten Figuren anordnen, sich aufgrund vielfältiger Beziehungen miteinander verbinden, gemäß spezifischen Regelmäßigkeiten sich behaupten ( ... )." Archiv in diesem Sinn ist so etwas wie ein Ermöglichungsgrund von Diskursivität, eine Instanz der historischen Analyse, die das Gesagte in seiner Existenz verständlich macht. In dieser Beziehung soll der Begriff im folgenden auf eine Bibliothek bezogen werden, die wie keine andere das Wissen das 17. Jahrhunderts repräsentiert. So kann man jedenfalls sprechen, wenn man im Hinblick auf die in Wolfenbüttel vollendete Büchersammlung blickt, die nicht nur die zweit- oder drittgrößte Bibliothek war, als ihr Gründer, Herzog August, 1666 starb, sondern die mit größter Wahrscheinlichkeit umfangreichste jemals von einem einzelnen Menschen mit größter Sorgfalt zusammengetragene Bibliothek überhaupt ist.

A consistent feature of Saul Bellow???s fiction is the protagonist???s encounter with one or more teaching figures. Dialogue with such individuals prompts the Bellovian protagonist to reject his current state of selfhood as inadequate and provokes him to re-form as a new person. The teacher figure offers a better self to which the protagonist is attracted; or, more frequently in Bellow, the protagonist is repelled by both his teacher and his own current state to form a new, previously unrepresented self. This thesis argues that Bellow???s self inherits and modifies the perfectionist philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, in a literary reinterpretation that parallels Stanley Cavell???s philosophical revaluation of the American Transcendentalists. In Emerson and Thoreau, and in Cavell???s reading of perfectionism, the self is attracted onward only by a better representation of selfhood in another, while Bellow???s self may also be, and often is, provoked by a repellent other to inhabit a new form of selfhood. This thesis takes the evolution of selfhood in Bellow to be structured by travel. In The Adventures of Augie March, Augie???s movement between selves is impelled by conversation with teacher figures and paralleled by his unending journeys. In Herzog, Herzog???s self-transformations and travels are provoked by reading and writing, and by the ecstasy of loss revealed to him through apostrophic conversations with the dead and absent in a series of unsent and mental letters. Letter-writing, the provocation for Herzog???s self-perfection, becomes a form of travel in Herzog. This thesis further argues that Bellow???s travelling self is a critical response to two poles of modern subjectivity, structured by European mythologies of travel: Bellow???s fiction is critical, first, of a Hegelian, egoist mode of selfhood structured after the Odyssey; but equally critical of examples of Levinasian openness to the Other, patterned on Abraham???s exile. Bellow does not accept either the Odyssean or the Abrahamic mode of selfhood on its own, recognizing oppressive possibilities in both. Travelling selfhood in Bellow, initiated by conversation with others, both fuses and rereads Odyssean and Abrahamic constructs within a new, but perpetually unfinished American mode of selfperfection.
