De Carli, Bruno Paes. January 2016 (has links)

FRANCISCO, Nathalia Monalisa 21 February 2017 (has links)
Vascular epiphytes are an important and diverse plant assemblage in tropical rainforests and it accountings for about 10% of all world flora. Due to their aerial condition they are particularly sensitive to the effects of environmental modifications caused by anthropogenic activities such as forest fragmentation. However, despite the importance of this plant group and the extension of areas of agricultural activity very little is known about the occurrence of epiphytes in isolated trees in pastures and the influence of the surrounding landscape. Our objective was to investigate the effect of 20 environmental variables at local and landscape (400,700, and 1,000m) scales on the richness, abundance, and biomass of vascular epiphytes and number of phorophytes in isolated pasture trees. We sampled all angiosperm holoepiphytes in trees with DBH ≥ 5cm within plots of 1.96 ha each along 15 areas. In order to test the effect of local and landscape metrics on community attributes we used generalized linear models (GLM’s). We model the responses of the total epiphytic community (all species) and functional groups of dominance, pollination, and dispersion. We recorded 16 epiphytic species and 9,936 individuals of vascular epiphytes. Together the dominant species Tillandsia recurvata and Tillandsia pohliana accounted for 84% of the total abundance recorded. Most of species were classified as entomophilous and anemochorous. There was no influence of local scale (pasture) metrics on any response. On the other hand, the landscape composition (% pasture, %forest, %coffee and cover land use richness) affected different responses of the communities (abundance, biomass, richness and %phorophytes) at different scales (400m and 1000m). Our results point to the importance of pasture as a refuge for epiphytic communities in fragmented landscapes and for the influence of the heterogeneity of the agricultural landscape on the maintenance of this group. It also provides important methodological implications being the first study to adopt simultaneously different forms of quantification and division of species into functional groups and to evaluate the influence of variables multi-scales.

The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis in which the development of the population structure of amazonian prawn, Macrobrachium amazonicum, is affected by the heterogeneity of habitats from the bottoms of bodies of water. Twelve mesocosms of natural background were used, where each mesocosm had an area of ~0.01 ha and a depth of ~1 m, and with an approximate volume of 100 m3. The mesocosms were stocked with 22/m2 juveniles of amazonian prawn and 1.1/m2 of juvenile tilapia (which composed the nektonic extract) in three different treatments: mesocosm with substrate made of geotextile blanket (MG), mesocosm with substrate made from bamboo (BB), and then mesocosm without substrate (SS). The prawn were collected monthly and at the end of the experiment in order to assess population structure, ovarian stage, body mass and length, sex-ratio, and survival. The presence of the substrates in the mesocosms increased the frequency of the CC morphotypes, accelerated the appearance of the GC1 and GC2 morphotypes, decreased the frequency of the TC morphotype at the end of the experiment, increased the size of males and females, and increased the frequency of ovarian stages IV and V. The effect was more pronounced with the presence of the MG substrate. On the other hand, the survival rate was significantly higher in the mesocosms without substrates even though the values were quite similar. The sex-ratio did not differ significantly between treatments with or without the addition of substrate. Therefore, the presence and the type of substrate added to the bottoms of water systems present an effect on the population growth of M. amazonicum, confirming the initial hypothesis which stated that population structure is dependent on the heterogeneity of habitats

This replacement process can bring environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration and reduce rates of greenhouse gases, but its impact on biodiversity is still poorly understood. There are some studies reporting higher richness and abundance of native species in areas of eucalyptus plantation than in active pastures. Native species able to establish and survive in this altered matrix are considered by many authors as generalists. However, many native species are unable to persist in the altered matrix, and are restricted to areas of native vegetation nearby plantations. Therefore, these agro-silvicultural landscapes constitute an environmental mosaic, with an anthropogenic matrix and associated areas with native vegetation at different successional stages, which influence the distribution of native tree species in a meso-scale perspective. In that sense, we demonstrate that areas of native vegetation increase the -diversity of native tree species in the landscape, where the distribution of these species is related to environmental gradients, especially soil types and land use. The presence of isolated trees within the eucalyptus plantation maintain moderate levels of diversity in the altered matrix. Therefore, the present work highlights the value of native forest fragments for biodiversity conservation. We also demonstrates that trees isolated in the midst of eucalyptus matrix are a prominent feature of the landscape and play a singular functional role, being important to the development of management and conservation plans

Grillo, Roberta Marotti Martelletti. January 2016 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The Atlantic forest is the second largest tropical rainforest of the American continent, however excessive devastation added to the high endemism rate in this environment has placed it among the five most significant hotspots in the world. In southeast Brazil, the floristic diversity of the arboreal component in the Atlantic forest has been related to variations among climate and altitude, within a wide geographic scale, as well as microenvironment variations, such as soil and topography, in local and regional scales. This study aims to investigate the floristic and phytosociology of the arboreal community in a section of the upper montane rainforest in the Atlantic domain (S portion) and compare it with a nearby area, which shows remarkable physiognomy variations (montane) and present at the same altitudinal level (U portion). Besides checking possible links between the structure patterns, composition and richness of the community species with edaphic factors, topographic and litter, stablishing comparisons with the montane area, this study aims to answer the following questions: In local scale, do significant differences occur in composition, structure and richness of species in the S portion in comparison to the montane area? In case it occurs, do topography, soil and/or litter explain these variations? Therefore, in each area four 50 x 50 meter sample blocks were implanted and subdivided into 10 x 10 m. The portions are located at the Serra do Mar State Park (PESM) - Cunha Centre, at the altitude of approximately 1.100 m. Every tree with PAP=15 cm within the subplots was sampled, numbered and measured as to PAP and height, mapped by the x and y measurements within the subplots.

January 2016 (has links)
They are characterized by the irregularity of their limits and by their floristic diversity, since the margins of water bodies are constantly changing. By presenting floristic and structural differences even among close forestal fragments, together with the lack of studies on the riparian forests of the São Paulo's midwest region, this study was then conducted. A forest inventory was made in order to know the floristic composition, vegetation structure, and to testify the current conservation state of a riparian forest on a forest remnant at the "Água da Cachoeira" watershed in Paraguaçu Paulista, SP. Through the plots method, we collected 518 individuals belonging to 29 families and 70 different species. From the observed data on each individual we prepared, at first, the list of species and the identification keys based on vegetative characters. Then, tables about the vegetation structure and distribution charts of the individuals' size classes were also prepared. Regarding the flora, there was a high species richness, being that the most abundant species already had their presence documented for this kind of vegetational formation. We also observed a large amount of tree-sized individuals and a lot of pioneer species. As for the structural part, we have noticed that the most frequent and abundant taxa are similar to those verified in other studies conducted in the region, however, common spe... We also demonstrates that trees isolated in the midst of eucalyptus matrix are a prominent feature of the landscape and play a singular functional role, being important to the development of management and conservation plans / Doutor

Pereira, Jeniffer Sati. January 2013 (has links)
Samplings were gathered monthly at four depths (subsurface, 1 m, 2 m and 0.25-0.30 m from the bottom) of the pelagic region of the system, during five consecutive years (1997-2001). Investigation aimed at (1) evaluating the influence of seasonality on the mixing and thermal, chemical and biological stratification patterns of the reservoir, a tropical, shallow mesotrophic ecosystem, during five consecutive years (1997-2001); (2) knowing the phytoplankton community seasonal and vertical variation during the same period; (3) knowing the β-diversity among layers of the pelagic portion of the reservoir. Variables studied were: air and water temperature, rain precipitation, DO, pH, free CO2, NO3-, NH4+, NT, PO43-, TP and the phytoplankton biomass estimated by the chlorophyll a. Four hundred and seventy nine algal taxa were identified and classified in 13 taxonomic classes. Reservoir showed less Zmix depth and thermal and chemical stratification from December to March, the greatest chlorophyll a, PO4-, NH4+ and free CO2 concentrations as well as anoxia being detected at the bottom of reservoir, suggesting an intensive decomposition process and photosynthetic production in this layer of reservoir. Period May-July was characteristic by an isothermal profile and the total mixing of the water column, as well as high DO concentrations especially at the reservoir surface, and smaller and homogeneous chemical concentrations along the water column. The reservoir did not show a definite pattern during the remaining months, being sometimes stratified... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor
