Mountain wave turbulence in the lee of the Hex River Mountains

Van Der Mescht, Deon 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Despite recorded mountain wave related aircraft accidents in South Africa, very little literature exists on South African mountain waves. This study discusses the results of a mountain wave study in the Hex River Mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The aim of this study was to measure mountain wave turbulence on the lee side of the mountains by conducting weather balloon soundings on the upwind and lee sides of the mountains. These soundings were performed over four days in the winter and spring, with each field day representing different synoptic scale weather conditions. Lee wave rotors were detected from several of the lee wave soundings. Significant values of horizontal vorticity around a north-south axis (y-component horizontal vorticity) were detected. The instrumentation was highly sensitive and able to measure even weak up and downdraft velocities associated with the rotors. Strong downdrafts were measured some mountain waves, but no strong downdrafts were detected near rotors which occurred below the mountain waves. The two dimensional positions of balloons were only available after a considerable amount of reanalysis. If this data can be made available onsite shortly after soundings, it can be used to decide where to move launch sites to, in order to obtain optimal results. Beduidende waardes van horisontale vortisiteit rondom ‘n noord-suid as (y-komponent horisontale vortisiteit) is gemeet.

Avaliação in vitro da variação do torque de remoção de parafusos para fixação de pilares protéticos submetidos a ciclos de parafusamento e desparafusamento / Torque removal evaluation of prosthetic screws after cycles of tightening and loosening: an in vitro study

Mayra Cardoso 01 December 2009 (has links)
Screw loosening is one of the most common problems of implant-retained prostheses. During their confection, dentists need to remove and re-install them several times, loosening and re-tightening the screws repeatedly. The first purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of repeated insertion/removal cycles on the removal torque of retaining prosthetic screws. The second purpose was to evaluate the influence of the hexagon of the abutment on the removal torque. For that, 20 regular external hex implants were used and 20 hexagonal abutments were tightened to the implants with a titanium alloy screw, with an insertion torque of 32Ncm, given by a digital torque gauge. The implant/abutment/screw assemblies were divided into two groups: (1) abutments with no hexagon on the base and (2) abutments with an hexagon on the base. Each assembly received a provisional restoration and was submitted to mechanical loading cycles for 15 minutes. After this, the screws were removed and the removal torque measured. This sequence was repeated ten times and then, the screw was changed for a new one, and another cycle was done. Linear regression analysis was performed and showed that removal torque values tended to decrease as the number of insertion/removal cycles increased, for both groups. Comparisons of the slopes and the intercepts between the two groups showed no statistic difference between them. There was also no difference between the mean values of last 5 cycles and the 11th cycle. It was concluded that (1) repeated insertion/removal cycles promoted gradual reduction in removal torque of screws, (2) changing screw by a new one after ten insertion/removal cycles did not increase resistance to loosening, and (3) removal of the hexagon of the abutment base had no effect on the removal torque of the screw.

Playing and solving the game of Hex

Henderson, Philip 11 1900 (has links)
The game of Hex is of interest to the mathematics, algorithms, and artificial intelligence communities. It is a classical PSPACE-complete problem, and its invention is intrinsically tied to the Four Colour Theorem and the well-known strategy-stealing argument. Nash, Shannon, Tarjan, and Berge are among the mathematicians who have researched and published about this game. In this thesis we expand on previous research, further developing the mathematical theory and algorithmic techniques relating to Hex. In particular, we identify new classes of moves that can be pruned from consideration, and devise new algorithms to identify connection strategies efficiently. As a result of these theoretical improvements, we produce an automated solver capable of solving all 8 x 8 Hex openings and most 9 x 9 Hex openings; this marks the first time that computers have solved all Hex openings solved by humans. We also produce the two strongest automated Hex players in the world --- Wolve and MoHex --- and obtain both the gold and silver medals in the 2008 and 2009 International Computer Olympiads.

Hybrid particle-element method for a general hexahedral mesh

Hernandez, Roque Julio 02 November 2009 (has links)
The development of improved numerical methods for computer simulation of high velocity impact dynamics is of importance in a variety of science and engineering fields. The growth of computing capabilities has created a demand for improved parallel algorithms for high velocity impact modeling. In addition, there are selected impact applications where experimentation is very costly, or even impossible (e.g. when certain bioimpact or space debris problems are of interest). This dissertation extends significantly the class of problems where particle-element based impact simulation techniques may be effectively applied in engineering design. This dissertation develops a hybrid particle-finite element method for a general hexahedral mesh. This work included the formulation of a numerical algorithm for the generation of an ellipsoidal particle set for an unstructured hex mesh, and a new interpolation kernel for the density. The discrete model is constructed using thermomechanical Lagrange equations. The formulation is validated via simulation of published impact experiments. / text

Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Qu?mica, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2011. / ABSTRACT The present work describes the phytochemical and pharmacological investigation on extracts of the leaves and stems and flowers of the species Plectranthus neochilus Schltr. belonged to the family Lamiaceae. The plant is aromatic herb popularly known in Brazil as ?boldo? or ?boldo-gamb??, and as the species P. barbatus Andrews (?boldo-brasileiro") e P. ornatus Codd. ("boldinho"), according to ethnopharmacological survey, is often used in the treatment of hepatic insufficiency and dyspepsia, replacing the Peumus boldus Molina (?boldo-do-chile?). The phytochemical investigation of the hexanic extract of the P. neochilus leaves and stems yielded two triterpenes: ?-amyrin (PN1) e friedelin (PN2). The compound ?-amirin was isolated as a fatty acid ester in position C-3. In this extract was also obtained the mixture of the steroids sitosterol and stigmasterol (PN3). The phytochemical study conducted with the ethyl acetate extract of the leaves and stems gave the methoxy flavone at positions C-6 and C-7, the cirsimartin (PN4). All compounds obtained were first described in the species. Structural elucidation of isolated compounds was based on spectroscopic analysis of 1D NMR, HPLC, ESY and by comparison with data found in literature. The methanol extract of leaves and stems of P. neochilus showed significant antioxidant activity when evaluated by the DPPH method, followed by the extract in ethyl acetate and hexane. We also evaluate the methanol extract of flowers of the species that showed activity lower than that observed for the methanolic extract from leaves and stems, and these activities confirmed for the content of phenolic extracts. The anticholinesterase activity of extracts of leaves and stems and flowers of P. neochilus was evaluated and found to inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase to all extracts studied.
