An Examination Of College Persistence Factors For Students From Different Rural Communities: A Multilevel Analysis

Hudacs, Andrew 01 January 2017 (has links)
Students transitioning into college from public school require more than just academic readiness; they also need the personal attributes that allow them to successfully transition into a new community (Braxton, Doyle, Hartley III, Hirschy, Jones, & McLendon, 2014; Nora, 2002; Nora, 2004; Tinto, 1975). Rural students have a different educational experience than their peers at schools in suburban and urban locations (DeYoung & Howley, 1990; Gjelten, 1982). Additionally, the resources, culture, and educational opportunities at rural schools also vary among different types of rural communities. Although some studies have examined the influence of rural students' academic achievement on college access and success, little research has analyzed the relationship between students of different types of rural communities and their persistence in post-secondary education. This study examined the likelihood for college-going students from three different types of rural communities to successfully transition into and persist at a four-year residential college. Multilevel logistic modeling was used to analyze the likelihood for students to persist in college for up to two academic years based on whether they were from rural tourist communities, college communities, and other rural communities. The analysis controlled for a variety of student and high school factors. Findings revealed that student factors related to poverty and academic readiness have the greatest effects, while the type of rural community has no significant influence on college persistence.

Customer Satisfaction Analysis

Funa, Laura January 2011 (has links)
The objective of this master thesis is to identify “key-drivers” embedded in customer satisfaction data. The data was collected by a large transportation sector corporation during five years and in four different countries. The questionnaire involved several different sections of questions and ranged from demographical information to satisfaction attributes with the vehicle, dealer and several problem areas. Various regression, correlation and cooperative game theory approaches were used to identify the key satisfiers and dissatisfiers. The theoretical and practical advantages of using the Shapley value, Canonical Correlation Analysis and Hierarchical Logistic Regression has been demonstrated and applied to market research.

The growth of mobile phone and therefore the number of base station, which establish communication with mobile devices, has extended the applicability of services under this wireless technology. Although it has benefits for the current lifestyle, mobile phone has generated concerns about possible adverse health effects of exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation populations. The set of three articles are included in this thesis with the overall objective to investigate the association between exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation arising from base station of the mobile phone and health symptoms. In cross-sectional study, 440 questionnaires were applied by means of interviews in two neighborhoods in Salvador/BA. Initially examined whether exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation/mobile phone on ways to use the cell phone handset and the perception of the population in exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation. Considering physical phenomena of absorption, reflection and diffraction, which affect the propagation of electromagnetic characteristics and functioning of the cell phone waves, especially as this is the strongest source of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, how to use by the population, the lack of base station Monte Serrat, considering also research showing an association between cell phone non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation and health effects and the findings of this research, it is appropriate to analyze the association between health effects and exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation mobile phone. These effects would be more linked to cell phone use in relation to base station. In this sense, it is understood that the reasons should be of more concern of the population are related to the duration of the calls, the use of the set of weak signal coverage and the proximity of the device to the skull, among other inappropriate usage modes. In the case of exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation/base station, in view of the low values of the electric field and that individuals are in the far field, the effects would be for residents to 300 m from its surroundings. In the analysis of the perception of the respondents, it was found more reference to risks than benefits. It was found that age influences the perception of risk associated with non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation /mobile phone. We evaluated the association between complaints and neurological and psychiatric diagnoses and exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation mobile phone, using a hierarchical logistic regression analysis. We observed an association between neuropsychiatric effects and reside near the base station and forms of cell phone use (≤30min / day, with weak signal coverage near the body, two or more chips and never turn off the phone to sleep). It was concluded that exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation mobile phone and other electronics was independently associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms of gender, education and smoking. In this sense, it is recommended the adoption of precautionary measures aiming to reduce such exposure: the installation of base stations of mobile phone away at least a distance of 300 m from residences. The cell phone user must use earphone or headphone pop, as well as to avoid using the device with weak signal coverage; should still leave the cell phone away from the body and keep it off while sleeping. These results may guide the authorities towards the achievement of prevention/ precaution and information for decision making regarding the management and risk communication for the promotion of health of individuals when exposed to such radiation.

Measuring Skill Importance in Women's Soccer and Volleyball

Allan, Michelle L. 11 March 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how to measure skill importance for two sports: soccer and volleyball. A division I women's soccer team filmed each home game during a competitive season. Every defensive, dribbling, first touch, and passing skill was rated and recorded for each team. It was noted whether each sequence of plays led to a successful shot. A hierarchical Bayesian logistic regression model is implemented to determine how the performance of the skill affects the probability of a successful shot. A division I women's volleyball team rated each skill (serve, pass, set, etc.) and recorded rally outcomes during home games in a competitive season. The skills were only rated when the ball was on the home team's side of the net. Events followed one of these three patterns: serve-outcome, pass-set-attack-outcome, or dig-set-attack-outcome. We analyze the volleyball data using two different techniques, Markov chains and Bayesian logistic regression. These sequences of events are assumed to be first-order Markov chains. This means the quality of the current skill only depends on the quality of the previous skill. The count matrix is assumed to follow a multinomial distribution, so a Dirichlet prior is used to estimate each row of the count matrix. Bayesian simulation is used to produce the unconditional posterior probability (e.g., a perfect serve results in a point). The volleyball logistic regression model uses a Bayesian approach to determine how the performance of the skill affects the probability of a successful outcome. The posterior distributions produced from each of the models are used to calculate importance scores. The soccer data importance scores revealed that passing, first touch, and dribbling skills are the most important to the primary team. The Markov chain model for the volleyball data indicates setting 3–5 feet off the net increases the probability of a successful outcome. The logistic regression model for the volleyball data reveals that serves have a high importance score because of their steep slope. Importance scores can be used to assist coaches in allocating practice time, developing new strategies, and analyzing each player's skill performance.
