Behavior of Prestressed Concrete Bridge GirdersAngomas, Franklin B. 01 May 2009 (has links)
For this research, prestress losses were monitored in six HPC bridge girders. These measured losses were compared to predicted losses according to four sources. Prestress loss predictive methods considered for this research were: 1- AASHTO LRFD 2004, 2- AASHTO LRFD 2004 Refined, 3- AASHTO LRFD 2007, and 4- AASHTO LRFD Lump Sum method. On the other hand, the camber prediction methods used in the present research were: 1- Time dependent method described in NCHRP Report 496, 2- PCI multiplier method, and 3- Improved PCI Multiplier method. For the purpose of this research, long-term prestress losses were monitored in select girders from Bridge 669 located near Farmington, Utah. Bridge 669 is a three-span prestress concrete girder bridge. The three spans have lengths of 132.2, 108.5, and 82.2 feet long, respectively. Eleven AASHTO Type VI precast prestressed girders were used to support the deck in each span. The deflection of several girders from a three-span, prestressed, precast concrete girder bridge was monitored for 3 years. Fifteen bridge girders were fabricated for the three span-bridge. Ten girders from the exterior spans had span length of 80 feet, and five girders from the middle span had span length of 137 feet. From the results of this research, in both the 82- and 132-foot-long, the AASHTO LRFD 2004 Refined Method does a better job predicting the prestress loss and it can be concluded that all the prediction methods do a better job predicting the loss for the larger girders. The Lump Sum method predicted very accurately the long term prestress loss for the 132-foot-long girders.

Comparative performance evaluation including life cycle cost is currently being conducted on a series of conventional and base-isolated case study buildings. Alternative design approaches and their influence in cost were to be evaluated . This investigation is intended to contribute in the development of isolated structures by allowing engineers to communicate the cost of higher performance systems to their clients. The reported effort is part of a larger cost-benefit study for isolated steel buildings, and the purpose of this thesis is to compare initial investment of 3-story conventional and isolated steel buildings and determine how isolation affects the cost of the structure.
The relative cost of seismic isolation, as a percentage of the total cost, may be higher in this study than for typical U.S. isolation applications because the relative premium is greater for a short building than a tall building. The cost of isolation layer for this building is in the order of 11.7% to 12.4% of the total cost. Such a large cost premium may be a huge restraint for most owners; therefore, strategies to reduce the isolation premium cost need to be investigated in detail.

A Semiquantitative Analysis of PCB and P,P-DDE Residues in Stranded Marine Mammals Using High Performance Liquid ChromatographyHayteas, David Lawrence 01 January 1996 (has links)
Organochlorines are ubiquitous pollutants of the marine environment. These lipid-soluble and highly persistent compounds are found in detectable amounts in almost all marine organisms, and accumulate in the lipid tissues of marine animals. This bioaccumulation leads to biomagnification of these contaminants in higher trophic levels. Near the top of many marine food chains are found the marine mammals, in whose blubber high levels of organochlorine residues have been measured. The most commonly occurring of these pollutants in these animals are the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) and p,p-DDE, a metabolite of the insecticide DDT. These substances have been shown to cause disruptions in the endocrine, immune, and reproductive systems, and are passed from mother to offspring through the placenta and by lactation. Presence and levels of residues of these compounds are, therefore, monitored in marine mammals to provide an indication of the health of a given population and the environment in which they live. Such monitoring is generally done with the use of gas chromatography (GC). High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is little used due to the poor ultraviolet (UV) absorbance properties of many of the organochlorines. PCB's and p,p-DDE do absorb UV well enough at concentrations usually encountered in marine mammals to permit the use of HPLC for detection and semiquantification of these substances. A method was developed for the screening of blubber of marine mammals for total PCB's and p,p-DDE using HPLC. The method was applied to the detection and approximation of levels of these two organochlorines in marine mammals from the east and west coasts of the United States. Geographical differences in levels of the two pollutants were found, indicating differences in primary feeding ranges. Evidence of placental transfer of these two organochlorines was also found. Especially high residue levels were found in the blubber of stranded killer whales, indicating that acquisition of high pollutant burdens is still a problem in these top predators. It was concluded that HPLC can be used to screen marine mammals for PCB's and p,p-DDE, and that residue levels determined can be useful in investigating species range, pollutant burdens, and health of populations.

Yes / This paper evaluates the influence of mineral admixtures partially replacing cement, sea sand replacing quartz, sea water replacing fresh water on ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). The fluidity and mechanical properties were studied. Besides, the impermeability, chloride resistance and freeze-thaw resistance were investigated. Failure modes, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, mass loss, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity and mechanical properties of UHPCs after freeze-thaw cycles were conducted. The results showed the fluidity of UHPC paste gradually increases with the improvement of water-binder ratio. It is recommended that the water-binder ratio of UHPC be set at 0.19. The fluidity also increases with the improvement of the content of slag, fly ash and water reducer, but decreases with the improvement of silica fume content. The flexural and compressive strengths of UHPC enhance with the improvement of the content of silica fume, but reduce with the improvement of the content of fly ash and slag. The UHPCs made of quartz sand, river sand and sea sand, all, achieve a high strength. UHPCs prepared at standard curing conditions, with or without steel fibers, mixed by artificial seawater and made of sea sand, exhibited excellent impermeability and chloride resistance. The frost resistant grade of all UHPC specimens prepared by standard curing are greater than F500 exhibiting excellent freeze-thaw resistance and sustainability.

<p>Many scientific problems contain nonlinear systems of equations that require multiple iterations to reach converged results. Such software pattern follows the bulk synchronous parallel model. In that sense, an iteration is a superstep, which includes computation of local data, global communication to update data for the next iteration, and synchronization between iterations. In modern HPC environments, MPI is used to distribute data and OpenMP is used to accelerate computation of each data. More MPI processes increase the cost of communication and synchronization whereas more OpenMP threads increase the overhead of multithreading. A proper combination of MPI and OpenMP is critical to accelerate each superstep. Proper orchestration of MPI processes and OpenMP threads is also needed to efficiently use the underlying hardware resources.</p>

<p>Purdue’s multi-purpose nanodevice simulation tool NEMO5 distributes the computation of independent spectral points by MPI. The computation of each spectral point is accelerated with OpenMP threads. A few examples of resource utilization optimizations are presented. One type of simulation applies the non-equilibrium Green’s function method to accurately predict drug molecules. Our profiling results suggest the optimum combination has more MPI processes and fewer OpenMP threads. However, NEMO5's memory usage has large spikes for each spectral point. Such behavior limits the concurrency of spectral point calculation due to the lack of swap space on HPC nodes to prevent out-of-memory. </p>

<p>A distributed resource management framework is proposed and developed to automatically and dynamically manage memory and CPU usage. The concurrent calculation of spectral points is pipelined to avoid simultaneous peak memory usage. This allows more MPI processes and fewer OpenMP threads for higher parallel efficiency. Automatic CPU usage adjustment also reduces the time cost to fill and drain the calculation pipeline. The resource management framework requires minimum code intrusion and successfully speeds up the calculation. It can also be generalized for other simulation software.</p>
