Drug and alcohol use by freshman at Siuslaw High School and their opinions regarding potentially effective drug and alcohol education programsByrd, Marcia J. 02 May 1995 (has links)
This study addressed the incidence of drug use by
freshmen at Siuslaw High School in Florence, Oregon, and
sought their opinions about effective drug and alcohol
prevention programs. The purpose was to provide basic data
which would ultimately assist in specific drug and alcohol
programs for this population.
In phase one, 83 students from four of seven freshmen
Health Education randomly selected classes were given the
Washington State Survey of Adolescent Health Behavior.
This survey consisted of 81 questions about student demographics, students' drug use, and their opinions of drug prevention programs. During phase two, the students were
asked open-ended questions about their suggestions for more
effective drug prevention programs and curriculum.
The survey revealed an average amount of drug use and
that the students did not think the drug prevention program at Siuslaw was working. The survey also revealed that teenagers are influenced to drink and use drugs by the
media, their friends, and by a lack of activities offered
by the community.
The study conclusions showed that Florence does have
teenage drug use and the community should consider a
variety of approaches. Data suggest that more youth
support groups, more affordable counseling, and more
recreational activities may help reduce drug use. The
school needs to develop a more comprehensive drug
prevention curriculum and implement it at the younger grade
levels. The school combined with the community, should
offer more drug-free alternatives and target those youths
who are not using drugs and promote their positive

Thesis (M. Dev.) -- University of Limpopo, 2017. / The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of ill-discipline on the performance of Grade nine learners at Nghonyama High School. The acts of indiscipline among students, especially at the secondary level of education are universal challenge thatmany schools face all over the world. A quantitative descriptive research wasconducted to determine if there was a relationship between conduct and performance of such learners. Data collection was done through completion of questionnaires. Two groups participated in the study: the first group consisted of fifty Grade nine learners and the second group was composed of ten educators - four members of the School Management Team and six teachers.
The study revealed that learners misbehave at school due to variety of reasons such as, peer pressure, overcrowding, lack of parental support, inability to do the work, poverty, lack of motivation to succeed, disrespect, moral decay, not being engaged in the formulation of rules, rules being not enforced, lack of parental care, unmonitored TV viewing, child-headed families, lack of effective disciplinary measures, poor perception of the aims and principles of schooling and poor home upbringing. The study further revealed that the most common types of illdiscipline in the area of study were vandalism, fighting, absenteeism, indecent dressing, substance abuse, bullying, stealing, smoking, and drinking alcohol. With ill-discipline academic performance is affected.The study equally revealed that the Department of Education is not doing enough to address the issue of infrastructure. For example, overcrowding is still a challenge. In other words, the school environment plays a role in promoting ill-discipline; if classes are overcrowded learners are forced to misbehave. The study recommends that teachers should be encouraged to refer cases of indiscipline to the School Management Team. Principals should also be encouraged to involve all stakeholders in the formulation of school rules. Parents must make sure thatschool rules are adhered to by all the learners, no matter whose child breaks the rule,and most importantly learners should be encouraged to cooperate well with their educators.

Affecting Children's Value Claims by Using High-Level Questioning Focused on Selected PoetrySheppard, Ronnie L. 08 1900 (has links)
This study was to determine the extent to which the use of high-level questioning, through eliciting responses to selected poems, affects children's value claims. Twenty-seven seventh-grade boys comprised the control group, and twenty-seven eighth-grade boys comprised the experimental group. The experimental group took part in values-clarification experiences for sixteen weeks. The control group received no value instruction. The Values Inventory was administered to both groups at the beginning and at the end of the sixteen weeks. Testing of the hypotheses resulted in eight of the hypotheses being significant at the .01 level, indicating that values-clarification experiences using high-level questioning and selected poems did affect children's value claims.

This study investigated the influence of three variables on current political attitudes of secondary school adolescents at two suburban-rural high schools in the northern Virginia area. Ability, grade level, and sex were examined to determine their influence on attitude measures essential to the develoµnent of citizenship within the social studies curriculum. The Freedans Scale, Law Scale and Dogmatism Field Scale were administered to a random sample of 180 ninth and twelfth grade adolescents which was equally divided between male and female subjects. The sample was further divided by ability levels (low, average, and high) which were selected by SRA subtest scores in reading, math, language arts, and educational ability. Significant findings were discerned using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), and chi-square analysis. Group and individual differences were examined for each of the independent variables studied as they affected the dependent measures of political attitudes.
One three-way and three two-way interactions were tested using the MANOVA. Only one interaction (ability by grade) was significant at the .05 level on the Dogmatism Scale. It was concluded that an increase in grade and ability levels effect lower scores on the Dogmatism Field Scale. Lower dogmatism scores effect an increase in support for the fundamental freedoms embodied in the Freedoms Scale.
Sex, as a variable, was the only main effect that did not interact with ability level or grade. The mean scores of the females in the study were slightly higher than the mean scores of the males on both the Freedoms Scale and the Law Scale. These results indicated a greater support for the fundamental freedoms embodied in the Freedoms Scale and a greater respect for the law and government officials for females over males.
Separate chi-square analysis of the individual responses to the questions on the Freedoms Scale and the Iaw Scale indicated a total of 21 items from the scales significantly related to ability and 17 items significantly related to grade or sex. No identifiable pattern was discernable which could be generalized into a group description of adolescent support or non-support for combinations of the various items.
Curricular approaches were suggested to improve citizenship instruction in the area of political socialization and recommendations were made for future research. / Ed. D.

skool te hanteer. Daar is beoog om hierdie riglyne deur middel van praktiese
modelle en werksvelle te implementeer sodat ouers begrip vir kinders se
persepsies kan verkry en dat konflik opgelos kan word deur middel van positiewe
kommunikasie.
In die literatuurstudie word ondersoek ingestel na persepsievorming en die
oorsake vir die vorming van negatiewe persepsies van skool. ‘n Persepsie word
gevorm deurdat betekenis aan ‘n ervaring, op grond van die persoon se
verwysingsraamwerk gegee word. Interne- sowel as eksterne faktore speel ‘n rol
wanneer persepsies gevorm word. Eksterne faktore behels die verhouding met
rolspelers soos: die ouers, die skool en onderwysers, die portuurgroep en die
leerder se verhouding met homself. Interne faktore wat in hierdie studie
ondersoek is, behels: lokus van kontrole, motivering, emosionele probleme,
kognitiewe probleme en gedragsprobleme.Die navorsingsprobleem is verken met behulp van ‘n loodsondersoek as ‘n
voortoets en diagnostiese vraelys wat deur die navorsingsgroep van 50 leerders
voltooi is. Onderhoude is met vyf leerders gevoer oor hulle ervaringe en
behoeftes met betrekking tot hulle persepsies van skool.
Bevindinge dui aan dat ongeveer ‘n vyfde van die skool se leerders oor ‘n
negatiewe persepsie van skool beskik. In die vraelys is leerders se persepsies
ten opsigte van verskeie rolspelers vasgestel. Daar bestaan behoefte by
leerders dat ouers betrokke en ondersteunend sal wees en dat ouers begrip vir
hulle persepsies sal toon.
Deur middel van praktiese diagramme en werksvelle is begrip en positiewe
kommunikasie tussen ouer en kind bewerkstellig. In Hoofstuk 6 word praktiese
riglyne aan ouers gegee oor hoe om sy kind, met ‘n negatiewe persepsie van
skool, te hanteer. Op hierdie wyse is gepoog dat leerders positiewe ervaringe
sal geniet; ‘n positiewe verwysingsraamwerk sal vorm en sodoende positiewe
persepsies van skool sal vorm. ‘n Bydrae is ten opsigte van ouerleiding gelewer.
Ouers word toegerus om ‘n kind met negatiewe persepsies van skool met begrip
te hanteer. / The aim of this study was to determine learners’ perceptions of school and to
provide guidelines for parents to deal with negative perceptions of school. These
guidelines were implemented using practical models as well as work sheets.
These were specifically aimed at enhancing parents’ understanding of the
negative perceptions and resolving conflict through positive communication.
In the literary study, the constitution of perceptions as well as the causes of the
constitution of negative perceptions was investigated. A perception is established
when a person gives meaning to an experience based on that person’s frame of
reference. Internal and external factors play a part when perceptions are
constituted. External factors in this study entail the relationship with parents,
school and teachers, peer group and the learner's relationship with himself.
Internal factors referred to in this study are locus of control, motivation, emotional
problems, cognitive problems and behavioural problems.

The research problem was explored using a pilot investigation as pre-test. A
diagnostic questionnaire was also completed by 50 learners. Five learners were
interviewed about their experiences and needs specifically in relation to their
perceptions of school.
Findings show that approximately one fifth of the learners of the school have
negative perceptions of school. In the questionnaire, the learners’ perceptions
with respect to a variety of role players were determined. There is a definite need
for parents to be involved and supportive. Learners also need them to show
understanding for their perceptions.
Positive communication and understanding between parents and learners were
established through practical diagrams and work sheets. In Chapter 6 practical
guidelines are given to equip parents to understand how to handle the child with
negative perceptions. The aim of this was to encourage learners to enjoy
positive experiences, to form a positive frame of reference and therefore develop
positive perceptions of school. A contribution towards parental guidance was
made. Parents are left equipped to deal with a child with negative perceptions of
