Estimating Total Phosphorus and Total Suspended Solids Loads from High Frequency Data

Jones, Amber Spackman 01 December 2008 (has links)
Frequently measured turbidity was examined as a surrogate for total phosphorus (TP) and total suspended solids (TSS) loads at two locations in the Little Bear River, Utah, USA. Using regression techniques, equations were developed for TP and TSS as functions of turbidity. The equations accounted for censored data, and additional explanatory variables to represent hydrological conditions were considered for inclusion in the equations. By using the resulting surrogate relationships with high frequency turbidity measurements, high frequency estimates of TP and TSS concentrations were calculated. To examine the effect of sampling frequency, reference loads were determined from the concentration records for two water years. The concentration records were artificially decimated to represent various frequencies of manual grab sampling from which annual loads were calculated and compared to the reference loads.

Etude des pertes magnétiques dans les matériaux magnétiques destinés aux applications de transport en haute fréquence et sous champ bidirectionnel / Study of magnetic losses on magntic materials destinated to transport applications at high frequency and under bidirectionnal magnetic field.

Hamrit, Oussama 08 October 2015 (has links)
Iron losses in electrical machine applications are of paramount importance, an approximate estimation of these losses can easily lead to a thermally unsustainable solution, in this context, it is essential to get exactly the magnetic characteristics of the magnetic materials used, moreover, with the recent interest for high speed electrical machines (high frequency), It is important to characterize magnetic materials at high frequency. In this work, a high frequency characterizing system (1 T - 10 kHz) under unidirectional field has been proposed and magnetic losses models has been studied and discussed. Magnetic fields in electrical machines could be alternative in one direction, elliptical or circular. In this context, a characterization under rotating field and a magnetic loss model has been proposed. Finally, when stator steel sheets are cut all in one piece, the cutting direction with regard to the rolling direction will change from one tooth pitch to another, for that a study of the FeSi non oriented anisotropy has been performed.

Database Streaming Compression on Memory-Limited Machines

Bruccoleri, Damon F. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Dynamic Huffman compression algorithms operate on data-streams with a bounded symbol list. With these algorithms, the complete list of symbols must be contained in main memory or secondary storage. A horizontal format transaction database that is streaming can have a very large item list. Many nodes tax both the processing hardware primary memory size, and the processing time to dynamically maintain the tree. This research investigated Huffman compression of a transaction-streaming database with a very large symbol list, where each item in the transaction database schema’s item list is a symbol to compress. The constraint of a large symbol list is, in this research, equivalent to the constraint of a memory-limited machine. A large symbol set will result if each item in a large database item list is a symbol to compress in a database stream. In addition, database streams may have some temporal component spanning months or years. Finally, the horizontal format is the format most suited to a streaming transaction database because the transaction IDs are not known beforehand This research prototypes an algorithm that will compresses a transaction database stream. There are several advantages to the memory limited dynamic Huffman algorithm. Dynamic Huffman algorithms are single pass algorithms. In many instances a second pass over the data is not possible, such as with streaming databases. Previous dynamic Huffman algorithms are not memory limited, they are asymptotic to O(n), where n is the number of distinct item IDs. Memory is required to grow to fit the n items. The improvement of the new memory limited Dynamic Huffman algorithm is that it would have an O(k) asymptotic memory requirement; where k is the maximum number of nodes in the Huffman tree, k < n, and k is a user chosen constant. The new memory limited Dynamic Huffman algorithm compresses horizontally encoded transaction databases that do not contain long runs of 0’s or 1’s.

Effects of Irreversible Electroporation and High-Frequency Irreversible Electroporation for the Treatment of Breast Cancer

Saunier, Sofie Milou 26 June 2023 (has links)
Breast cancer (BC) is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths for women in the United States, estimated to affect 1 in 8 women. Difficulties arise in BC treatment due to the hormone sensitivity and heterogeneity of the malignancies, and the poor prognosis after metastases. Due to the immense physical and psychological effects of conventional surgical methods, minimally invasive, non-thermal, focal electroporation-based ablation therapies are being investigated for the treatment of BC. Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) delivers a series of long, monopolar electrical pulses via electrodes inserted directly into the targeted tissue which disrupt cellular membranes by creating nano-scale pores, killing the cells via loss of homeostasis while promoting an immune response. However, IRE requires cardiac synchronization and a full-body paralytic to mitigate unwanted muscle contractions, which motivated the creation of second generation High-Frequency IRE or H-FIRE. H-FIRE delivers short, bipolar pulses to destroy cancer cells without muscle contractions and nerve excitation, and allows for more tunable treatment parameters. Throughout my thesis, I discuss investigations of H-FIRE for the treatment of triple-negative and hormone-sensitive BC cell lines and compare efficacy to IRE outcomes. To further establish the translation and understanding of H-FIRE for BC applications, my master's thesis focuses on: (1) determining the lethal electric field threshold of both cell lines in a 3D hydrogel matrix after H-FIRE and IRE; and (2) employ those values in a single bipolar probe numerical model to simulate in vivo treatments. The culmination of this thesis advances the use of H-FIRE in breast tissues, as well as demonstrates how in vitro data can be used to develop clinically relevant numerical models to better predict in vivo treatment outcome. / Master of Science / Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most deadly forms of cancer for women in the United States, affecting every 1 in 8 women. Difficulties arising in the treatment of BC include the hormone sensitivity of malignancies, metastatic tendencies, and the diversity of the tissue that characterizes the breast. Surgical options like mastectomy or lumpectomy are most often used when treating BC; however, these are incredibly taxing on the patient. This reason has sparked investigations of focused ablation modalities for the treatment of BC, specifically non-thermal mechanisms like electroporation-based therapies. Electroporation explains the phenomenon that cells subjected to a high enough electric field will result in increased membrane permeability, allowing for the entrance of therapeutic agents in reversible mechanisms, or cell death beyond an irreversible point. Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) has shown success for the treatment of prostate, liver, kidney, and pancreas. However, due to some drawbacks, second generation High-Frequency IRE (H-FIRE) is increasingly being investigated for certain cancer types and is the main focus of this thesis project. Within this thesis, I discuss investigations of H-FIRE with applications to treat malignant breast cell lines. Specifically, my thesis focuses on: (1) determining the point at which cancer cells damage is irreversible; and (2) incorporate those values into a numerical model used to simulate electroporation treatment if a tumor were embedded in a layer of fatty connective breast tissue. The culmination of this thesis enhances our understanding of H-FIRE in the breast, with the hopes of future transition of application into animal studies and ultimately the clinic.

Evaluation of quantification methods for inclusion distribution in clean steel / Utvärdering av kvantifieringsmetoder för inneslutningsfördelning i rena stål

Fröjd, Felicia January 2019 (has links)
Ovako products are in many cases used in high fatigue applications. Currently Ovako use ultrasonic evaluation at 10 MHz as a volumetric method for inclusion control. This study intends to investigate two new methods for quantification of micro inclusions. The aim of this study is to develop a method for large area scanning by creating a polishing method that allows you to polish away a specified amount of material, in this case 60 μm. This method will be used to capture the true distribution of critically sized non-metallic inclusions by creating a 3D image out of several 2D scans from the light optical microscope. These results will be compared to the results of high frequency ultrasonic testing at 125 MHz to get a quantitative idea of what can be captured by the high frequency ultrasonic investigation. Two different steel grades were studied, named Grade A and Grade B, with one sample of each. Both grades have similar composition, except that Grade B contains more sulphur. Both grades are of approximately the same hardness. The two steel samples were scanned with a scanning acoustic microscope at the same time as a method to polish away 60 μm was developed. After this, the method was used to scan several layers with an image recognition program in the light optical microscope. The results from both methods were then compared. After testing, it was concluded that the inclusion distribution pattern was completely different for the two steel grades, however the same pattern could be seen for each grade in the LOM and in the ultrasonic. This indicates that the same types of inclusions could be found. It was also found that the ultrasonic enlarges the indications by a severe amount making it hard to take any measurements directly from the ultrasonic images in this study. What is possible to see in the ultrasonic images are the distribution of inclusions and the inclusion placement in the sample. A result of 10 % matching inclusions between both methods is found, which is to say that the same 50 inclusions out of the 500 largest indications from each method in the steel sample is found. These 10 % is however not sufficient enough to conclude by how much the ultrasonic enlarges the indications compared to the light optical microscope.
