Caractérisation expérimentale du flux thermique transitoire pariétal pour différents modes de combustion / Experimental Characterization of Transient Wall Heat Flux for Different Modes of Combustion

Moussou, Julien 10 July 2019 (has links)
CO2 emissions in internal combustion engines are linked with inefficiencies due to wall heat losses during combustion. Those losses exhibit a sharp peak of a few MW/m2 close to top dead center and are linked to complex flame/wall interaction phenomena that vary with the combustion mode. A fine understanding of the associated phenomena requires experimental characterization of wall heat flux with a time resolution better than the millisecond. In this PhD work, a rapid compression machine and a precombustion cell are used to reproduce engine combustion phenomena. Thin-junction thermocouples allow an instantaneous measurement of the wall heat flux with a time resolution of 0.1 ms. Three combustion modes are generated: propagation flame, diffusion flame and auto-ignition.Different possible measurement technologies and procedures (thermocouples, thermoresistances and rapid phosphor thermometry) are compared and benchmarked against the features of combustion phenomena. Flux during wall heat transfer reaches values of a few MW/m2 and its shape varies with the combustion mode. During premixed flame propagation, flux is dominated by a peak during flame-wall interaction of about 5 MW/m2 in amplitude and 0.5 ms in duration. During Diesel combustion, heat flux is approximately constant during the injection duration; itsevolution is driven by an increase of the convection coefficient up to 10 kW/m2/K, which is attributed to air entrainment by the spray; the temperature increase from combustion is considered a second-order effect. During combustion presenting a pressure wave propagation (e.g. knock for some spark-ignition cases or HCCI with high energy content), the intensity of pressure oscillations and wall heat flux are shown to be correlated. That correlation is independent of the phenomenon creating the pressure wave; heat flux during knock is 3-5 times higher than for a comparable premixed propagation flame.

SiGeC Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors

Suvar, Erdal January 2003 (has links)
Heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBT) based on SiGeC havebeen investigated. Two high-frequency architectures have beendesigned, fabricated and characterized. Different collectordesigns were applied either by using selective epitaxial growthdoped with phosphorous or by non-selective epitaxial growthdoped with arsenic. Both designs have a non-selectivelydeposited SiGeC base doped with boron and a poly-crystallineemitter doped with phosphorous. Selective epitaxial growth of the collector layer has beendeveloped by using a reduced pressure chemical vapor deposition(RPCVD) technique. The incorporation of phosphorous and defectformation during selective deposition of these layers has beenstudied. A major problem of phosphorous-doping during selectiveepitaxy is segregation. Different methods, e.g. chemical orthermal oxidation, are shown to efficiently remove thesegregated dopants. Chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) hasalso been used as an alternative to solve this problem. The CMPstep was successfully integrated in the HBT process flow. Epitaxial growth of Si1-x-yGexCy layers for base layerapplications in bipolar transistors has been investigated indetail. The optimization of the growth parameters has beenperformed in order to incorporate carbon substitutionally inthe SiGe matrix without increasing the defect density in theepitaxial layers. The thermal stability of npn SiGe-based heterojunctionstructures has been investigated. The influence of thediffusion of dopants in SiGe or in adjacent layers on thethermal stability of the structure has also been discussed. SiGeC-based transistors with both non-selectively depositedcollector and selectively grown collector have been fabricatedand electrically characterized. The fabricated transistorsexhibit electrostatic current gain values in the range of 1000-2000. The cut-off frequency and maximum oscillation frequencyvary from 40-80 GHz and 15-30 GHz, respectively, depending onthe lateral design. The leakage current was investigated usinga selectively deposited collector design and possible causesfor leakage has been discussed. Solutions for decreasing thejunction leakage are proposed. Key words:Silicon-Germanium-Carbon (SiGeC),Heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT), chemical vapordeposition (CVD), selective epitaxy, non-selective epitaxy, collector design, high-frequency measurement, dopantsegregation, thermal stability.

Some Aspects of Advanced Technologies and Signal Integrity Issues in High Frequency PCBs, with Emphasis on Planar Transmission Lines and RF/Microwave Filters

Mbairi, Felix D. January 2007 (has links)
The main focus of this thesis is placed on high frequency PCB signal Integrity Is-sues and RF/Microwave filters using EBG structures. From the signal Integrity aspect, two topics were mainly discussed. On one hand, the effect of increasing frequency on classical design rules for crosstalk reduction in PCBs was investigated experimentally and by full-wave simulations. An emphasis was placed on the 3×W spacing rule and the use of guard traces. Single-ended and differential transmission lines were considered. S-parameter measurements and simu-lations were carried out at high-frequency (up to 20 GHz). The results emphasize the necessity to reevaluate traditional design rules for their suitability in high frequency applications. Also, the impacts of using guard traces for high frequency crosstalk re-duction were clearly pointed out. On the other hand, the effect of high loss PCB ma-terials on the signal transmission characteristics of microstrip lines at high frequency (up to 20 GHz) was treated. Comparative studies were carried out on different micro-strip configurations using standard FR4 substrate and a high frequency dielectric ma-terial from Rogers, Corporation. The experimental results highlight the dramatic im-pact of high dielectric loss materials (FR4 and solder mask) and magnetic plating metal (nickel) on the high frequency signal attenuation and loss of microstrip trans-mission lines. Besides, the epoxy-based SU8 photoresist was characterized at high frequency (up to 50 GHz) using on-wafer conductor-backed coplanar waveguide transmission lines. A relative dielectric constant of 3.2 was obtained at 30 GHz. Some issues related to the processing of this material, such as cracks, hard-skin, etc, were also discussed. Regarding RF/Microwave filters, the concept of Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) was used to design and fabricate novel microstrip bandstop filters using periodically modified substrate. The proposed EBG structures, which don’t suffer conductor backing issues, exhibit interesting frequency response characteristics. The limitations of modeling and simulation tools in terms of speed and accuracy are also examined in this thesis. Experiments and simulations were carried out show-ing the inadequacies of the Spice diode model for the simulations in power electronics. Also, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model was proposed as an alternative and a complement to full-wave solvers, for a quick and sufficiently accurate simulation of interconnects. A software implementation of this model using Matlab’s ANN toolbox was shown to considerably reduce (by over 800 times) the simulation time of microstrip lines using full-wave solvers such as Ansoft’s HFSS and CST’s MWS. Finally, a novel cooling structure using a double heatsink for high performance electronics was presented. Methods for optimizing this structure were also discussed. / QC 20100809

Investigating Unsteadiness in a Low-Pressure Turbine Stage using Constant Temperature Anemometry

Adam C Moeller (18462006) 29 April 2024 (has links)

In this thesis, an experimental procedure for assessing unsteady fluctuations in flow velocity inside an annular low pressure turbine test facility using constant temperature anemometry is established. This procedure is then applied to two test cases in order to validate the methodology and build expertise with the measurement techniques involved. The results of these experiments appear to be reasonable and in good agreement with the body of literature documenting such cases. After the procedure is validated, the experiments in the annular test section are conducted and the results are processed according to the same methodology as previous. The results provide spatial and temporal understanding of the flow at a plane downstream of the blade row. The uncertainties of measured quantities are computed and the experimental results are contextualized with a comparison to a numerical study. The body of work is assessed to determine whether the research objective has been met and recommendations for future studies are given.

Dielektrická relaxační spektroskopie kompozitních soustav / Dielectric Relaxation Spectroscopy of Composite Systems

Holcman, Vladimír January 2008 (has links)
The subject of this doctoral thesis is the study of dielectric properties of a binary composite made up of a polymer matrix and metallic filler. Properties of such composites have been extensively examined in the past and they turned out to depend on temperature, frequency and in particular on filler concentration. The objective of this work was first to experimentally establish and second to describe quantitatively the effect of the size of metallic particles on the properties of the composite concerned, yet at the same filler concentration. This study was carried out on the model system ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer – nickel. The acquisition of experimental results required extensive measurements in a wide frequency and temperature interval, as well as a manufacture and preparation of a large set of samples with different concentrations and Ni filler sizes. Measurements were in part carried out at the Centre for Electronic Correlations and Magnetism, Institute of Experimental Physics V of the University of Augsburg (Germany) and, after the installation of a new cryogenic system, at the Department of Physics at FEEC, BUT Brno. Measurements were performed on a number of meters (Alpha-Analyzer of Novocontrol, HP4284A and HP4285A of Hewlett Packard and E4991A of Agilent) in the frequency range 1 Hz – 1 MHz and in the temperature interval 10 K – 300 K. The nickel concentration in systems studied varied from 0 % to 75 % and nickel particles were of a spherical shape with diameters between 35 and 115 m. The measurement results have shown that in the above frequency and temperature window just a single relaxation and a single conductivity mechanism occur. It was also proved that the frequency dependence of complex permittivity is for different Ni particle sizes at the same concentration different. These results have been quantified and a simple mathematical formula based on the Lichtenecker mixture rule has been proposed for their description. The physical origin of the effect of particle size at the same total nickel concentration is sought in different surface areas of internal interfaces between nickel and polymer in the composite

Flux sédimentaire en estuaire de Seine : quantification et variabilité multi-échelle sur la base de mesure de turbidité (réseau SYNAPSES) / Sediment fluxes in the Seine estuary : quantification and variability based on turbidity measurements (SYNAPSES monitoring network)

Druine, Flavie 26 June 2018 (has links)
The dynamics of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) in macrotidal estuaries is highly variable both spatially (from the fluvial compartment to the estuary mouth) and temporally (from the second to several years), but it is essential to understand and quantify the sedimentary dynamics of estuarine environments. With the development of high-frequency measurement networks around the world, the main objective of this study is to qualify the turbidity measurements acquired by a high-frequency measurement network (SYNAPSES network) located on the Seine estuary (i) in terms of monitoring the SPM dynamics from the fluvial compartment to the turbidity maximal zone (TMZ) and (ii) in terms of estimation of the SPM fluxes on different spatio-temporal scales of the Seine estuary. Data acquired from the SYNAPSES network and complementary in situ campaigns (81 days of 12 h - OBS-3+/YSI/LISST 100X-C / ADCP 600 kHz) on four stations from the fluvial estuary of the Seine Estuary to the turbidity maximal zone, are an extremely rich and unique dataset on estuarine environments. The variability in the relationship between turbidity measurements [NTU] and SPM concentration measurements [g.L-1] on each campaign, reveals the effect of (i) the internal sensor technology and (ii) the variability of the particle inherent optical properties (median diameter D50, dry density rho and scattering efficiency Qc) on the sensitivity of different optical sensors. The analysis of the in situ and the SYNAPSES data allowed to calibrate the turbidity measurements in mass concentration, with a validated relationship on the annual cycle, specific to each of the stations and reduced uncertainties. After a study of the SYNAPSES station representativeness across the section, the instantaneous fluxes of SPM are estimated (i) from the SPM concentration and liquid flow data acquired by the ADCP on the global section and (ii) from the SPM concentrations of the SYNAPSES network coupled to the hydrodynamic model MARS-3D (estimation of the liquid flow). Comparisons of SPM fluxes in situ to those estimated by the combination SYNAPSES/MARS-3D allow to propose a specific coefficient for each of the SYNAPSES network stations, xith the aim of adjusting the SPM instantaneous fluxes estimated from the SYNAPSES network to the in situ reality, with reasonable uncertainties. the tools and approaches developed in the PhD thesis on the Seine estuary can be applied to other macrotidal estuaries to estimate sedimentary fluxes.
