Wolfskins and togas : lesbian and gay historical fictions, 1870 to the presentWaters, Sarah Ann January 1995 (has links)
This thesis examines the role of historical reference in the representation of homosexuality in British literature since the late nineteenth century. The texts it examines are both literal fictions - novels, short stories and poems - and less 'imaginative' forms, such as biography, historiography and sexology: its main project is to disentangle the network of discourses facilitating and restricting representation of the homosexual past. It identifies the history of this representation as a series of moments - the turn of the century, the 1930s, the 1950s, for example - when homosexuality was redefined, and lesbian and gay traditions correspondingly reinvented. This continual reinvention was often the work of homosexuals themselves:the thesis demonstrates how historical representation has allowed lesbians and gay men to intervene in sexual debate when more obviously 'contemporary' dissident voices were being publicly silenced. Chapters I and 2 examine the invocation of historical example within the late Victorian homophile subculture, and argue that the ancient Greek practice of paiderastia provided tum-of-the-century homosexuals with an affirmative model with which to counter juridical and sexological prescription. Chapters 3 and 4 consider the extent to which Antinous and Sappho became established in the same period as homosexual icons, but were subtly reconstructed by different, sometimes competing, sexual discourses. Subsequent chapters explore the influence of literary models such as Radclyffe Hall's The Well ofLoneliness (1928) upon lesbian historical fiction and biography of the 1930s, and uncover some hitherto forgotten lesbian texts; examine the role of male homosexuality in the women's historical romance of the 1950s; and discuss the homoerotic historical fiction of lesbian authors Mary Renault and Bryher. The final chapter considers recent lesbian and gay historical fiction, and finds reflected in the genre the modem homosexual self-image with all its gender and racial tensions.

The representation of the Spanish Civil War in the novels of Claude Simon and Juan MarseWykes, Sarah Jill January 2002 (has links)
This thesis consists of a close reading of the representation of the Spanish Civil War in selected novels of Juan Marse (1933-) and Claude Simon (1913-). It explores how this representation, ultimately, reveals the traces of their different intellectual contexts. The initial comparison questions whether Marse's representation of the Spanish revolution in Barcelona implies, like Simon's account, a negative representation of the concept of political engagement and a similar historical pessimism. It goes on to discuss how this negative view is shaped by the writers' respective historical contexts and aesthetics. Secondly, since, to varying degrees, the novels studied make the reader critically aware of processes of narrativisation and representation, and of issues of narrative reliability and authority, the thesis explores the extent to which their representations of the Civil War are 'anti-realist'. In order to do so, it initially locates the question of 'realism' or 'anti-realism' in the texts within a wider theoretical framework: that of the critique of realism within poststructuralist French theory after Barthes. The latter debate over referentiality in literary realism also underpins ongoing critical debates over the status of history as a text. This thesis, thirdly, considers whether both writers' representations of the Civil War and of historical processes suggest a particular attitude towards the writing of history, namely whether and to what extent Simon's and Marse's representations of the war problematize the relationship between their historical referent - the events of the war and/or its aftermath - and its narration and interpretation. In particular, it asks whether Marse's texts involve the kind of rejection of progressive historical 'meta-narratives' which is implicit and explicit in Simon's representation of the Civil War, but also whether Simon's texts do, in fact, not simply undermine this model of historical causality but posit an alternative, anti-progressive historical telos.

"As the times want him to decide": the lives and times of Florence Maybrick, 1891-2015Miller, Noah 06 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines major publications produced between 1891-2015 that portray the trial of Florence Maybrick. Inspired by Paul Davis’ Lives and Times of Ebenezer Scrooge, it considers the various iterations of Florence’s story as “protean fantasies,” in which the narrative changed to reflect the realities of the time in which it was (re)written. It tracks shifting patterns of emphasis and authors’ rigid conformity to associated sets of discursive strategies to argue that this body of literature can be divided into three distinct epochs. The 1891-1912 era was characterized by authors’ instrumentalization of sympathy on Florence’s behalf in response to contemporary concerns about the administration of criminal justice in England. From 1923 until 1964, this “Victorian tragedy” was re-structured according to the tropes of detective fiction and non-fiction crime writing in a cultural atmosphere increasingly preoccupied with postmodernism, “the psychological,” and shifting gender relations. The concept of the “permissive society” and emergence of “new social history” following the late 1960s and early 70s produced a revised version of the story that accentuated aspects of the case that were illustrative of the structures of Victorian society. As such, this thesis is a metahistorical examination of how authors’ approaches to the question of whether or not Florence poisoned her husband in 1889 have been shaped by contemporary mentalités. / Graduate

Previous issue date: 2016-05-31 / O objetivo do trabalho é verificar de que modo, em O mulato, Aluísio Azevedo representa componentes históricos, sociais e culturais – incluindo aqueles relativos à sexualidade e ao corpo – tendo em vista o centro da obra que é apontar as nefastas consequências do preconceito racial e da escravidão. Para tanto, investiga-se a representação da sociedade burguesa no século XIX no Maranhão e, particularmente, em São Luís, em sua articulação com os preceitos do Naturalismo. Como tal representação é construída por meio das categorias narrativas, essas são analisadas separadamente e em seu conjunto, dando-se prioridade à articulação entre história, personagens e espaço, bem como com a instância narrativa (narrador), a focalização e o tratamento do tempo. O embasamento teórico é constituído por três grupos de estudos: a) histórias da literatura sobre o Naturalismo e ensaios críticos sobre Aluísio Azevedo; b) ensaios sobre o corpo de modo geral e textos específicos sobre o corpo no naturalismo brasileiro e c) estudos teóricos da narrativa. Quanto ao primeiro grupo, as principais balizas são: História concisa da literatura brasileira de Alfredo Bosi e Aluísio Azevedo, vida e obra (1857-1913) de Jéan-Yves Mérian. Em relação ao segundo grupo, a base é formada por História do corpo, organizado por Jean-Jacques Courtine, Georges Vigarello e Alain Corbin, Leituras do desejo: o erotismo no romance naturalista brasileiro de Marcelo Bulhões e A metáfora do corpo no romance naturalista de Sonia Brayner. Em relação ao terceiro grupo, tomamos os seguintes textos: "A personagem do romance" de Antonio Candido, Discurso da narrativa de Gérard Genette e Espaço e romance de Antônio Dimas. / The objective of the present work is to see how, in O mulato, Aluísio Azevedo represents historical, social and cultural components - including those related to sexuality and body – having in mind the center of the literary work that is to point out the negative consequences of racial prejudice and of slavery. For this purpose, it is investigated the representation of the bourgeois society in the nineteenth century in Maranhão, and particularly in São Luís, in its articulation with the precepts of the Naturalism. As such representation is constructed through narrative categories, these are analyzed separately and as a whole, giving priority to the relationship between history, characters and space, as well as to the narrative instance (narrator), the focus and the time treatment. The theoretical background consists of three study groups: a) literature stories about Naturalism and critical essays about Aluísio Azevedo; b) essays about the body in general and specific texts about the body in the Brazilian naturalism and c) theoretical studies of the narrative. As for the first group, the main references are: História concisa da literatura brasileira by Alfredo Bosi and Aluísio Azevedo, vida e obra (1857-1913) by Jéan-Yves Mérian. As for the second group, the basis is formed by História do corpo, organized by Jean-Jacques Courtine, Georges Vigarello and Alain Corbin, Leituras do desejo: o erotismo no romance naturalista brasileiro by Marcelo Bulhões and A metáfora do corpo no romance naturalista by Sonia Brayner. Through history it becomes possible to examine how societies in the past were structured and what has happened in the past. The school classroom is a common place to get knowledge and understanding of this subject through the history subject, which continually has to make changes to fit the standards of the multicultural society. The curriculum mentions an aim to develop the students’ historical consciousness, use of history and history culture which is stated to be an important part of the curriculum's purpose. The object of this overview is to examine and extend the understanding of the interaction between history culture and education by examining how teachers make their use of history culture to create meaningful teaching experiences for students and students' understanding of the subject through their history culture. By reviewing existing research about the problem area through different databases we have been led by the question “What does research say about the relationship between history culture and education?”. The research in this overview argues that both multiculturalism and interculturality are central themes in the interaction between history culture and education. The multicultural society affects both the school and the history subject and the need of developing the intercultural competence of students to meet the standards of the multicultural society is highlighted. The history subject is a meetingpoint for different history cultures which gives the students a chance to speak about their experiences and enrich the teaching. This on the other hand makes the risk of conflict higher since the students all have different history cultures and interpretations which affect their approach. This makes it important for teachers to be aware of the different perceptions of history and to create an inclusive teaching environment to reduce the possibilities for conflicts. Research made outside of Sweden emphasizes that by including students’ history culture in teaching it will further their involvement in the subject. The conclusion of the overview is that history culture and education are interconnected and that the history subject isn’t only transfers of facts but instead a process that is actively shaped and influenced by history culture.

Drawing on a feminist methodological approach, the work discusses how migrants may be perceived or treated differently based on gender, and how this impacts (or is impacted by) policies. In particular, one illustrative event, the closure of the Franco-Italian border in April 2011, is analyzed more deeply using the theory of domopolitics as introduced by William Walters. The research examines the interface of history and fiction. It predominantly focuses on historical fiction on the Zimbabwean liberation war written in Shona, Ndebele and English and published after the attainment of political independence in 1980. Historical fiction on the liberation war is both biographical and autobiographical. Consequently, the study comes to the conclusion that historical fiction is a veritable stakeholder in the history issue in Zimbabwe. It becomes another type or source of history that cannot be papered over when dealing with the nation’s history. In a nation where liberation war history is not only taken seriously, but is also a vigorously contested terrain, historical fiction becomes part of those discursive contestations, particularly on nation and nationalism. It is in this regard that the study problematises the interface of history and fiction by reasoning that historical fiction published in the early 1980s largely advances a state-centered perspective which views history, nation and nationalism in positive terms. This discourse uses history in order to argue for a single nation that derives its identity from the heroic and symbolic guerrilla characters. Nationalism is exclusively presented as humanising and as being the sole legitimate political brand capable of leading the nation. On the other hand, historical fiction written in English and published in the late 1980s onwards represents alternative historical truths that contest nationalism and debunk official definitions of nation. This discourse leads to the pluralisation of perspectives on nation and nationalism. The focus on historical fiction published in three languages used in Zimbabwe is a conscious attempt to transcend ethnicity in critical scholarship. Discussing novels in Shona, Ndebele and English, which are the three main languages in Zimbabwe, makes it possible for the study to draw reasoned conclusions on the bearing of time, language, region and background among others on historical representation. This undertaking brings to the fore how literature responding to similar historical processes appears moderately conjunctive and principally disjunctive.
