Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka Ester Jönsdotter som en historisk kulturell symbol. Frågorna är vilka uppfattningar som skapades om Ester under hennes tid, hur dessa uppfattningar har använts i olika historiekulturella kontexter och hur uppfattningarna om Ester cirkulerat i den historiekulturella kommunikationskedjan. Det teoretiska ramverket i denna studie är en kombination av det historiekulturella- och det kunskapshistoriska fältet. Forskningen bygger på historikern Klas-Göran Karlssons definition av historiekultur, historiebruk och historiekulturella kommunikationskedjor. Jag utgår från Simone Lässig och hennes definition av kunskapshistoria som social och kulturell historia som berör alla områden i mänskligt liv samt hennes analytiska resonemang där kunskap studeras som ett historiskt fenomen. Jag tar också inspiration från Johan Östling och David Larsson Heidenblads definition av kunskapshistoria och förståelse av begreppet cirkulation. Analysmetoden närläsning används för att få en förståelse för samtida texter och för att skapa en grund för de andra analysmetoderna. För att undersöka vilka föreställningar om Ester som skapades i samtida texter och för att undersöka historiebruket av dessa uppfattningar i kommunikationkedjans texter görs en innehållsanalys. Cirkulationsanalys används för att undersöka hur samtida texter och föreställningar om Ester har använts över tid och för att undersöka potentiella förändringar i dessa föreställningar när de cirkulerat mellan olika historiska kulturer. Resultaten visar tydligt att de föreställningar som skapades om Ester i samtida texter utgör en viktig del av historiebruket och hur minnet av Ester framställs i den historiekulturella kommunikationskedjan. Slutsatsen av studien indikerar att Esther har varit värdefull att bevara eftersom hon har symboliserat något för någon. Ester Jönsdotter har blivit en historiekulturell symbol eftersom föreställningarna om henne har varit anpassningsbara och användbara olika tider och i olika kulturella kontexter. The questions are are which conceptions were created about Ester during her time, how these conceptions have been used in different historical cultural contexts and how the conceptions about Ester circulate in the historical cultural communication chain. The theoretical framework in this study is a combination of historical cultural theory and knowledge historical theory. The research is based on the historian Klas-Göran Karlsson's definition of historical culture, historical use and historical cultural communication chains and Simone Lässig's definition of knowledge history as social and cultural history that touches on all areas of human life as well as her analytical reasoning where knowledge is studied as a historical phenomenon. I also take inspiration from Johan Östling and David Larsson Heidenblad's definition of knowledge history and understanding of the concept of circulation. The close reading analysis method is used to gain an understanding of the contemporary texts and to create a basis for the other methods of analysis. To investigate what conceptions of Ester were created in the contemporary texts and to investigate the historical use of these conceptions in the texts of the communication chain, a content analysis is done. Circulation analysis is used to investigate how the contemporary texts and conceptions of Ester have been used over time and to investigate potential changes in the conceptions of Ester as they circulate between different historical cultures. The results clearly show that the conceptions that were created about Ester in the contemporary texts form a significant part of the use of history and how the memory of Ester is portrayed in the historical cultural communication chain. The conclusion of the study indicates that Esther has been valuable to preserve because she has symbolized something for someone. Ester Jönsdotter has become a cultural symbol of history as the conceptions about her have been adaptable and useful different times and in different cultural contexts.
