Paul Claudel et le renouveau catholique : accords et désaccords, 1886-1938 / Paul Claudel and the Catholic Revival agreements and disagreements 1886-1938 : agreements and disagreements 1886-1938

Laussucq Dhiriart, Graciane 14 June 2017 (has links)
Appeared in reaction to post-revolutionary secularization, the Catholic Revival is a French movement uniting catholic artists and intellectuals, particularly active between 1885 and 1935. Rooted in intransigent Catholicism, it aims at replacing modern society with a Christian one, in which God would be given back his place in art and mind. From his conversion in 1886, until he abandoned literature for biblical exegesis during the thirties, Claudel, as a writer and intransigent Catholic, belongs to that movement. He nevertheless remains on the fringe of it, participating only occasionally for limited works to its several initiatives. He builds only uncertain or bad relations with most of the other Catholic writers. How can we understand this? Far from being Claudel’s particularity, this situation symbolizes the history of the Catholic Revival, which was simultaneously guided and controlled by anti-modernism repression. Yet the attempt of a Christian art, eager to show the presence of the supernatural in men’s world, often appears as a form of naturalism, in others words as a reduction of supernatural to human stage. Claudel reproaches the most part of the Revival members for this naturalism, even if they are involved, just as he is, in the common project of reconciliation between Catholicism and modern world.

Sir Thomas Tresham (1543-1605) and early modern Catholic culture and identity, 1580-1610

McKeogh, Katie January 2017 (has links)
What did it mean to be a Catholic elite in Protestant England? The relationship between the Protestant crown and its Catholic subjects may be examined fruitfully through a study of an individual and his world. This thesis examines this relationship through the example of Sir Thomas Tresham, who has often been seen as the archetypal Catholic loyalist. It is argued that the notion of Catholic loyalism must be reconfigured to account for the complexities inherent in the relationship between Catholics and the government. The duty to honour the monarch's authority was bound up with social and national sentiment, but it often accompanied criticisms of the practice of that authority, and the ways in which it encroached on personal experience. Intractable tensions lay behind expressions of loyalty, and this thesis travels in these undercurrents of cultural, social, religious, and political conflict to investigate the nuanced relationship between English Catholics and English society. Political resistance as classically understood - actions which directly opposed and undermined government policy - risks the exclusion of culture and identity, through which resistance was redefined. It is argued that Tresham's participation in elite activities became vehicles for resistance in the Catholic context. Book-collecting, reading, and the donation of books to an institutional library are framed as forms of resistance which countered the spirit of government legislation, and provided for the continuation of a robust tradition of Catholic scholarship on English soil. Through artistic and architectural projects, Tresham found ways to participate in elite culture which were not closed off to him, and in which Catholicism and gentility could sit side by side. These activities were also avenues for resistance, whereby the erection of stone testaments to Tresham's faith defied the government's attempts to redefine Englishness and gentility in Protestant terms, to the devastation of Catholicism. These artistic works combined piety, gentility, and resistance, and, together with Tresham's two Catholic libraries, they were to be his legacy.

Égalité, mixité, sexualité : le genre et l'intime chez de jeunes catholiques du mouvement de la Jeunesse Ouvrière Chrétienne (JOC-F), dans les années 1968 et au-delà (1954-1987) / Egality, coeducation, sexuality : gender and privacy issues among young Catholics of the male and female Young Christian Workers (YCW) in the sixties and beyond

Favier, Anthony 05 December 2015 (has links)
This works aims to question the evolutions brought by young people aged 14 to 25 in two mouvements of Specialized Catholic Action in 1960s France. Historiography makes a link between social changements in gender or intimacy issues during this time and students as social actors and the phenomenon of secularization, however, this study would like to renew the field by focusing on the young people in a religious mouvements aimed at the working class. Born in the interwar period on a line of uncompromising moral and Christian reconquest of the workers, YWCs became unexpected but real actors of gender evolutions in French society of the postwar boom. The mouvements represent a middle way of social change by seeking an original ecclesial and social position in accordance with the double injunction of a Christian and social activist movement. The beginning of the coeducation, debates on gender equality in schools, at work or in society, as well as matters of sexual emancipation are a good historic observatory of the evolution on gender. While Catholicism gradually abandoned as a primary form insertion into society as a lay specialized Catholic Action from the 1970s, this history is also that of the consequences of secularization on a denominational movement. The bursting of meaning, the development of a practical pluralism, the search for autonomy reflect the tensions in contemporary French Catholicism since the 1980s on issues of gender and intimacy in the very contemporary.
