The focus of this research is the learning of host families participating in the curricula of student exchange programs. The role of the host family is central to the exchange event, but hosting is often a problematic experience during which the host family faces may dilemmas. The research substantiates the relevance of family systems theory in relation to the host family and positions the host family in an intercultural context. Phenomenographic techniques are used to describe the different ways of experiencing a hosting event and to account for how these ways occur. The phenomenon of Hosting is described by the conception of Synergy. A Spectrum of Experience, rather than a hierarchy, is defined by the four components of :fit, responsibility, investment and learning. Host family dilemmas and discernment are related to prior experience of hosting and the Synergy between expectations and learning outcomes. Intercultural learning in a hosting event is identified as participants' understanding of themselves, the process of hosting, communication skills and an appreciation of cultural heritage. Host family expectations have an impact before, during and after the hosting event while realistic expectations recognise the potential for learning moments as well as the contribution that conflicts, confrontations and challenges make to learning and growth in an intercultural context. Structure, function, and analysis of Coleoptera and Heteroptera assemblages on two species of hazelnut in OregonWetherill, Karen R. 26 January 2000 (has links)
The European hazelnut, Corylus avellana L., was imported into the U.S. in the
late 1800's and is now grown throughout the Willamette Valley in Oregon. A native
species of hazelnut, C. cornuta Marshall, is a common shrub found in forested areas of
the Pacific Northwest. Foliage of both C. avellana and C. cornuta was sampled using
beating sheets. The objectives of the study were as follows: 1. To compile a complete list
of the Coleoptera and Heteroptera fauna of both species of hazelnut. 2. To determine the
amount of overlap across host plants. 3. To measure arthropod abundance and species
diversity within functional groups across a forest-edge-orchard gradient. 4. To use
ordination techniques to determine where peak abundance of individual taxa occur along
the forest-edge-orchard gradient. One hundred and thirty-two species of Coleoptera and
forty-nine species of Heteroptera were identified on Hazelnut foliage. The most
abundant Heteroptera in the orchards studied is a newly introduced mirid predator,
Malacocoris chlorizans (Panzer). There is a great deal of overlap between the two
hazelnut species. Most differences are attributed to rare species. Diversity and
abundance of predaceous Coleoptera and Heteroptera were severely hindered by IPM
management practices, involving insecticide usage, within the orchards. However, the
organic orchards retained high levels of diversity and abundance of predaceous
Coleoptera and Heteroptera in the centers of the orchards. The organic orchards had
higher diversity of phytophagous Coleoptera and Heteroptera as compared to IPM
orchards, but the abundance of those insects was not different between the IPM and
organic orchards. The ordinations of the Coloeptera data show that the peak abundances
of individual species often shift along the forest-edge-orchard gradient over time and that
the organic orchards retain peak abundances of predaceous Coleoptera even in late
season. The ordinations of the Heteroptera data show that several mirid predators are at
their peak abundances within the orchards of both IPM and organic orchards. / Graduation date: 2000

Interactions between Xanthomonas campestris pv. manihotis (ISPP list 1980) and cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz)Asiedu, Samuel Kwaku. January 1984 (has links)
High, intermediate and low virulent strains of Xanthomonas campestris pv. manihotis were isolated from cassava fields in Nigeria. Resistance to cassava bacterial blight (CBB) increased with age. CBB was established by as little as 10('4) CFU/mL inoculum, but general symptom severity and lesion length differences between resistant, intermediate and susceptible cultivars were greatest with 10('6) CFU/mL and leaf wilting with 10('8) CFU/mL. CBB increased shoot dry weight and foliar ion leakage; this increase was greater for potassium and magnesium than for sodium and calcium. Pathogen multiplication in leaves was least in the resistant cultivar and it spread to the stem only in the susceptible one. CBB reduced liquid flow in stem of resistant, intermediate and susceptible cultivars by 43, 35 and 96%, respectively. Flow in the healthy susceptible cultivar was double that in the more resistant cultivars. The number of non-functional vascular bundles in diseased plants was negatively correlated with liquid absorption and translocation.

Interactive Effects of Geography and Host Plant Species on Genetic and Phenotypic Variation of Cotton Fleahopper PopulationsBarman, Apurba 2011 December 1900 (has links)
The cotton fleahopper, Pseudatomoscelis seriatus (Reuter) is a widely distributed insect across the United States. Although, it feeds on several native wild hosts, its agricultural importance lies as an economic pest of cotton in several states in the southern United States. No studies have addressed intraspecific genetic and phenotypic variation of this insect pest at a large geographic scale.
I examined genetic variation among cotton fleahopper populations associated with cotton in different geographic locations across the southern United States (Chapter II). Using dominant, neutral, nuclear molecular markers (AFLP, amplified fragment length polymorphism) and mitochondrial DNA sequences, I found that overall genetic differentiation among different geographic populations, collected from cotton in eleven cotton growing states, was low but significant. AFLP revealed the presence of three regional groups representing western (Arizona), central (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama), and eastern (Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina) populations.
I examined if there were distinct lineages of cotton fleahoppers associated with three of its host plant species: cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), horsemint (Monarda punctata) and woolly croton (Croton capitatus) in five different locations of Texas by using AFLP markers (Chapter III). I found two distinct host-associated lineages at three locations and local panmixia in the other two locations.
I tested if host preference of cotton fleahoppers were affected by geographic variation and prior experience. Conducting choice tests with a Y-tube olfactometer, I found that host preference in cotton fleahoppers for horsemint (one of its native host plants) is conserved and unaffected by individual?s prior experience with cotton (Chapter IV).
Finally, I explored the role of host-plant species in morphological differentiation of the cotton fleahopper in two locations that differ in presence of distinct host-associated lineages. Using a geometric-morphometric approach, I detected significant effect of host plant and geography on body morphology and wing shape of cotton fleahopper populations (Chapter V). Length of antenna and rostrum were two important traits associated with morphological divergence of cotton and horsemint associated insect populations. Cotton associated individuals had relatively longer antenna and rostrum compared to individuals associated with horsemint.

The plasticity and geography of host use and the diversification of butterfliesSlove Davidson, Jessica January 2012 (has links)
Our world is changing rapidly and factors like urbanisation, changed agricultural practices and climate change are causing losses in butterfly diversity. It is therefore of importance to understand the source of their diversity. Given the remarkable diversity of herbivorous insects compared to their non-herbivorous sister groups, changes in host use have been implicated as a promoter of speciation. This thesis looks at geographical aspects of host range evolution and the plasticity of host use. We show that butterflies in the subfamily Nymphalinae that feed on a wide range of host plants have larger geographic ranges than species with narrower host ranges. Although tropical butterflies appear to be more specialised than temperate species, this effect is lost when controlling for the differences in geographic range. Geographic variation in host plant use within Polygonia faunus, related to morphologically distinct subspecies, did not show any genetic differentiation. This suggests that the observed variation in host plant use is a plastic response to environmental differences. Reconstructing host use for the Polygonia-Nymphalis and Vanessa group shows that plasticity is also important for understanding host use at the level of butterfly genera. Using unequal transition costs and including larval feeding ability revealed that frequent colonisations of the same plant genus can often be explained by non-independent processes, such as multiple partial losses of host use, recolonisation of ancestral hosts, and parallel colonisations following a preadaptation for host use. These processes are further reflected in the conservative use of host plant orders within the butterfly family Nymphalidae. Few taxa feed on more than one host plant order, and these expansions occur at the very tips of the tree, which we argue is evidence of the transient nature of generalist host use. Expectations and Experiences of Volunteer Tourism: A Look from Different PerspectivesCasier, Tara January 2012 (has links)
While the study of volunteer tourism has been growing over the past decade, there is limited literature that takes a global approach, whereby one explores the perspective of a number of stakeholder groups in such experiences. The aim of this project was to fill this gap by looking at the volunteer tourism experience from four perspectives, namely the volunteer, the organization, the host family, and the community at large. The focus in this case was on the experiences and expectations of these groups. The research was qualitative; based primarily upon interviews. The research for this project took place in Ghana.
It was found that the three local stakeholders (the organization members, the host family members and people from the broader community) generally viewed the experience similarly. Volunteers often expressed views that set them apart from the other groups. Main themes for the groups generally revolved around cultural differences, communication and progression through stages of the experience. The stages of the experience showed three main stages, those referring to the time before the volunteer, during the volunteer???s stay and the time after the volunteer???s departure. Cultural differences included discussions of culture shock, stereotypes, and mis-communications in cross-cultural dialogue. Communication was a major issue, and was to be found lacking between all groups. In regards to communication there was also a suggestion for continuing contact and relationships between the locals and volunteers beyond the volunteer???s time in the community.

Microbial Programming of the Neonatal Pig2013 July 1900 (has links)
Microbial succession, composition and ecological distribution within the gastro-intestinal tract are critical areas of study since commensal bacteria have been shown to affect animal health and development. A series of experiments were conducted to determine whether altered microbial succession in neonatal animals would modulate the development and health of pigs later in life. An initial experiment in conventional pigs was conducted to establish the early postnatal microbial succession profile and to identify early colonizing bacterial species. Culture-independent analysis of digesta and mucosal microbiota showed distinct variation between the proximal and distal gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) indicating that fecal or distal gut profiles cannot be used to predict succession in the upper GIT. Temporally, Clostridium spp. were found to be most prevalent in the GIT microbiota of the neonatal pig up to 0.5 d of age, accompanied by a high abundance of Escherichia and Shigella spp. These genera were transiently displaced by Streptococcus spp. followed by a preponderance of Lactobacillus spp. between 3 and 20 d of age. Subsequently, a “snatch-farrow” model was employed to modulate early postnatal microbial succession and investigate the effects on postweaning microbial composition. Pigs were collected into sterile towels directly from the vaginal canal and transferred to a sterile isolator environment for the first 4 days. Pigs were either inoculated with sow feces or not at 1 d of age resulting in significant differences in fecal microbial profile at 4 days of age, prior to removal from isolators. Analysis using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphisms (TRFLP) of intestinal microbiota at 28 d of age did not show significant clustering or variation in diversity indices for either group during the 4-d postnatal isolator phase. However, enumeration of selected taxa using quantitative PCR did indicate significant treatment differences in postweaning microbiota. Despite these results, this approach was rejected for further use as the protocol provided only moderate control of early postnatal colonization and variation and unpredictability of the timing of natural farrowing contributed to significant litter effects. Finally, a gnotobiotic monoassociation model was used investigate the effects of modulating early postnatal microbial succession on postweaning physiology, microbial composition and mucosal gene expression. Twenty-four cesarean-section derived piglets were monoassociated for the first 4 days of life with either L. mucosae (L), S. infantarius (S), C. perfringens (C) or E. coli (E). Pigs from treatments E and L animals showed the highest growth rate during the conventional rearing period (7-28 d of age). Monoassociation with different bacterial species during the first 4 d of life resulted in significant changes in postweaning microbial composition in small intestine and colon as assessed by quantitative PCR, although TRFLP did not identify unique clustering by treatment or variation in diversity. L. mucosae was the only inoculant species with significant variation, with a reduction in the colonic mucosa at 28 days of age. Monoassociation with L. mucosae was also associated with increased nutrition related gene expression in small intestine. Pigs monoassociated with E. coli had low expression of microbial sensing (TLR2 and 4), NFkappaB complex genes and mucins at 28 d of age. This study clearly showed that controlled early microbial succession in neonatal pigs altered post-weaning commensal microbiota composition, postweaning physiology and host gene expression in small and large intestine. The findings suggest the importance of peri-natal management and feeding strategies in promoting postweaning health and performance.

La faune sauvage a été depuis longtemps incriminée dans la survenue de zoonoses et joue le rôle de réservoir d'agents pathogènes (virus Nipah, Hendra, Ebola, Hantaan etc.) pour l'homme. Les îles tropicales et subtropicales du Sud-Ouest de l'Océan Indien (SOOI) constituent l'une des 34 régions reconnues comme « hotspot » de biodiversité au niveau mondial. Elles sont caractérisées par un très fort endémisme de la faune sauvage surtout sur l'Ile de Madagascar. Le caractère multi-insulaire de la région du SOOI, la diversité de ses biotopes et ses disparités biogéographiques et humaines offrent un champ d'investigation unique pour explorer « in natura » la dynamique évolutive des agents infectieux et les relations hôtes-virus. Nos travaux de recherche ont porté sur deux modèles de virus à ARN de polarité négative, les paramyxovirus et les lyssavirus. Le premier modèle viral nous a permis d'aborder les questions relatives à la dynamique de transmission virale au sein de communauté d'hôtes, plus particulièrement, les chauves-souris et les petits mammifères terrestres de Madagascar et d'identifier les facteurs agissant sur cette dynamique de transmission et de diversification virale, en particulier les facteurs bio-écologiques associés à leurs hôtes. Le second modèle viral, les lyssavirus, nous a permis de décrire sur l'ensemble des îles du SOOI échantillonés, la circulation virale dans ce système multi-insulaire diversifié, au sein des chauves-souris dont la plupart des espèces sont endémiques à cette région. Dans l'ensemble, nos investigations ont permis de mettre en évidence des échanges viraux (« host-switch ») importants entre chauves-souris, petits mammifères terrestres endémiques de Madagascar et les rongeurs introduits, le rôle de ces mammifères en tant que réservoir viral majeur et souligner le rôle disséminateur de Rattus rattus. Par ailleurs, nous avons pu identifier ce phénomène de « host-switch » comme étant le mécanisme macro-évolutif prépondérant et l'importance des facteurs biotiques et abiotiques à l'origine de la dynamique de transmission et de la diversification virale observée chez les paramyxovirus de chauves-souris de Madagascar. / Since many decades, the wild fauna has been incriminated as an important reservoir of many zoonotic pathogens (Nipah, Hendra, Ebola, Hantaan viruses etc.) at risk for humans. Tropical and subtropical islands of the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) are part of the 34 areas of the world recognized as "hotspot" of biodiversity. They are characterized by a strong wildlife endemism especially on Madagascar. The multi-island structure of the SWIO region, the diversity of its biotopes and its biogeographical human disparities, offer a unique opportunity to investigate "in natura" the evolutionary dynamics of infectious agents and the host-virus relationships. Our research has focused on two models of negative RNA viruses, paramyxoviruses and lyssaviruses. The first virus model allowed us to address issues related to the dynamics of viral transmission within a host community, in particular, bats and small terrestrial mammals of Madagascar and to identify the driving factors, especially bio-ecological factors associated with their hosts, affecting the dynamic of transmission and of viral diversification. The second model allowed us to describe on the islands of the SWIO, the intense circulation of bats lyssaviruses in this multi-island system which bats are endemic to this region. Overall, our investigations highlighted (i) intense viral exchanges ("host-switch") between bats, endemic terrestrial small mammals and introduced rodents from Madagascar, (ii) the role of these mammals as major viral reservoir and (iii) the key role played by Rattus rattus as viral spreader. Furthermore, we identified both the phenomenon of "host-switch" as the major macro-evolutionary mechanism among bat paramyxoviruses from Madagascar and the importance of biotic and abiotic factors in shaping the transmission dynamics and viral diversification.
