Recrystallization of L-605 cobalt superalloy during hot-working process / Recristallisation du superalliage base cobalt L-605 pendant la déformation à chaud

Favre, Julien 25 September 2012 (has links)
Co-20Cr-15W-10Ni alloy (L-605) is a cobalt-based superalloy combining high strength with keeping high ductility, biocompatible and corrosion resistant. It has been used successfully for heart valves for its chemical inertia, and this alloy is a good candidate for stent elaboration. Control of grain size distribution can lead to significant improvement of mechanical properties: in one hand grain refinement enhance the material strength, and on the other hand large grains provide the ductility necessary to avoid the rupture in use. Therefore, tailoring the grain size distribution is a promising way to adapt the mechanical properties to the targeted applications. The grain size can be properly controlled by dynamic recrystallization during the forging process. Therefore, the comprehension of the recrystallization mechanism and its dependence on forging parameters is a key point of microstructure design approach. The optimal conditions for the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization are determined, and correlation between microstructure evolution and mechanical behavior is investigated. Compression tests are carried out at high-temperature on Thermec-master Z and Gleeble forging devices, followed by gas or water quench. Mechanical behavior of the material at high temperature is analyzed in detail, and innovative methods are proposed to determine the metallurgical mechanisms at stake during the deformation process. Mechanical properties of the material after hot-working and annealing treatments are investigated. The grain growth kinetics of L-605 alloy is determined, and experimental results are compared with the static recrystallization process. Microstructures after hot deformation are evaluated using SEM-EBSD and TEM. Significant grain refinement occurs by dynamic recrystallization for high temperature and low strain rate (T≥1100 ◦ C, strain rate < 0.1s−1), and at high strain rate (strain rate > 10s−1). Dynamic recrystallization is discontinuous and takes place from the grain boundaries, leading to a necklace structure. The nucleation mechanism is most likely to be bulging from grain boundaries and twin boundaries. A new insight of the modeling of dynamic recrystallization taking as a starting point the experimental data is proposed. By combining the results from the mechanical behavior study and microstructure observation, the recrystallization at steady-state is thoroughly analyzed and provides the mobility of grain boundaries. The nucleation criterion for the bulging from grain boundaries is reformulated to a more general expression suitable for any initial grain size. Nucleation frequency can be deduced from experimental data at steady-state through modeling, and is extrapolated to any deformation condition. From this point, a complete analytical model of the dynamic recrystallization is established, and provides a fair prediction on the mechanical behavior and the microstructure evolution during the hot-working process.

Duplex coatings on AISI H13 and AISI D2 tool steels by using plasma nitriding and TiN-PVD.

Franco Júnior, Adonias Ribeiro 05 August 2003 (has links)
In this work, the influence of both the microstructure and the load-bearing capacity of nitrided layers, formed on top of AISI D2 and AISI H13 tool steels, on adhesion and wear resistance of PVD-TiN coatings was studied. The threshold nitriding potential curves for the above mentioned steels and the optimum conditions of the pre-treatments which increased the adhesion as well as the wear resistance of the PVD-TiN were determined experimentally. By using longer nitriding times (about 11 h) and lower nitrogen contents in the gas mixture (about N2-5%vol.), it was possible to minimize the pile-up degree of the TiN/H13 nitrided substrates and, consequently, the occurrence of coatings chipping. This flaw persists when the nitrided layer is thin, due to an abrupt transition of mechanical properties at the TiN coating / steel core interface. Shorter nitriding times (about 42 min.) and lower nitrogen contents (about N2-5%vol.), on the other hand, are sufficient to guarantee a better adhesion of TiN coatings on AISI D2 tool steel, as the core of such steel possesses relatively better load-bearing capacity than the AISI H13 tool steel. The presence of a black layer at the TiN/nitrided layer interface was observed in all coatings deposited over nitrided layers produced above the threshold nitriding potential curves. This layer affects adversely the wear resistance and the adhesion of the TiN coatings. When higher loads are applied on the coated surface, “egg shell" type flaws easily occur.

Unapređenje kvaliteta alata za livenje pod pritiskom primenom tehnologija inženjerstva površina / Application of surface engineering technologies for improvement of diecasting tools quality

Proučavane su koroziona postojanost i tendencija lepljenja različitih
materijala u kontaktu sa tečnom Al–Si–Cu legurom.
njena tačnost i verodostojnost simulacije procesa livenja. Korozioni
min).
tečnom metalu značajno prevazilaze performanse čelika i plazma
nitriranog sloja.
Međutim, dolazi do
prisutne u prevlakama. Stečena znanja o identifikovanim
mehanizmima habanja i propadanja zaštitnih slojeva prevlaka
poslužiće daljem razvoju dupleks slojeva namenjenih za zaštitu alata
za livenje pod pritiskom.
/
Corrosion resistance and soldering tendency of different materials in molten
Al–Si–Cu alloy were studied. Hot-working tool steel, plasma nitrided steel and
duplex layers with CrN, TiAlN, TiAlSiN and CrAlN top coatings, which were
produced to various degree of surface roughness, were covered by the study.
An ejection test was employed for investigation of the concerned phenomena.
The ejection test was improved in order to increase its accuracy and the
reliability of process simulation. Samples were examined in both short and
extended periods of contact (5 and 20 min) with liquid casting. Casting
solidification was extended in order to intensify the corrosion effects. Contrary
to common findings, it was found that the ejection force of the investigated
materials does not depend on their chemical composition. For the coated
samples, a pronounced dependence of the ejection force on the surface
roughness was found. The ejection force increases with decrease in surface
roughness. All investigated coatings are prone to mechanical soldering by Al–
Si–Cu alloy. Still, their corrosion resistance substantially exceeds the corrosion
resistance of steel and plasma nitrided layer. Longer exposure of coated
samples to cast alloy induced lower ejection forces, which is a consequence
of coatings oxidation. It was found that the investigated coatings are inert to
liquid aluminium. However, the underlying material undergoes oxidation and
corrosion through coating growth defects. The findings concerning the wear
mechanisms of protective layers support further development of duplex layers
intended for die casting tools protection.
