PLANTING SEEDS OF CHANGE: GARDEN SPACES AND THE SURVIVAL OF HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUMS IN CRISIS

Pollinger, Maegan January 2017 (has links)
This study explores the use of gardens and agricultural spaces at historic house museums, and the potential these spaces have for supporting positive change. At the turn of the twenty-first century, house museums grappled with a crisis of limited funding and ever shrinking visitor capacity, which continues to affect the success of these spaces today. I argue that garden spaces can provide interpretive revitalization, community relevancy, and increased income for historic house museums that can positively support a house museum. By surveying house museums throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania, I show that garden spaces provide a tool for house museums to gain stability amidst crisis. / History

From Houses To House Museums: Architectural Representation Of Different Narrations

Gunhan, Aslihan 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The transformation of historic houses into house museums is not only a current issue within the field of museology, but also a new phenomenon for architecture. The deconstruction of the term &ldquo / house museum&rdquo / into &ldquo / house&rdquo / and &ldquo / museum&rdquo / and the meaning these terms acquire, have the potential to generate a new discussion in architecture. Besides being a physical dwelling unit, &ldquo / house&rdquo / will be interpreted as a domestic space where the inhabitants are able to personalize. A museum, on the other hand, will be approached as a modern institution reflecting issues related with historiography and aesthetics. &ldquo / Curiosity Cabinets&rdquo / as the origin of museums are re-visited for its conceptual correspondence with the house museum. Interpreting the house museum as the new curiosity cabinet, the analysis of the terms &ldquo / house&rdquo / , &ldquo / home&rdquo / , &ldquo / museum&rdquo / and &ldquo / house museum&rdquo / has the power to decipher the potentials of a spatial transformation, which renders the curiosity arousing concepts and spatial formations visible. Specific tools of architectural narrative are used to interpret selected cases, aiming to perform an integrated discussion on this architectural entity.

Abstract: We will study The Rui Barbosa museum at in Rio de Janeiro. The place where Rui and his family lived for twenty eight years and after his death in 1923, was transformed into a museum by the Brazilian government. At the moment it was institutionalized as a place of memory, it ceased to be a place of residence and became a reference for society and nation. The house should be preserved, not as an architectural example of its time, but as a historical mark, a monument, a place which should be reverenced for its former proprietor's presence, so it doesn't became a forgotten mark of his work and life. We know that the main function of a museum is, through the historical narrative of the material and immaterial patrimony, to create a believable environment for the visitor to share the existence of the symbol character while acquiring knowledge. Through this principal we will demonstrate the fundamental structure of a residence museum, using a multidisciplinary strategy. In reinforce similarities and differences, we carry responsibility to enforce the presence of the symbol character in the history and memory of our country. Rui Barbosa was a character worthy to be honored and revered. / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História

"To Preserve, Protect, and Pass On:" Shirley Plantation as a Historic House Museum, 1894–2013

Dahm, Kerry 18 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis provides an analysis of Shirley Plantation’s operation as a historic house museum from 1894 to the present period, and the Carter family’s dedication to keeping the estate within the family. The first chapter examines Shirley Plantation’s beginnings as a historic house museum as operated by two Carter women, Alice Carter Bransford and Marion Carter Oliver, who inherited the property in the late nineteenth century. The second chapter explores Shirley Plantation’s development as a popular historic site during the mid-twentieth century to the early part of the twenty-first century, and compares the site’s development to the interpretative changes that had been occurring at Colonial Williamsburg. The third chapter analyzes and critiques Shirley Plantation’s present interpretative focus as a historic site, with the fourth chapter offering suggestions for developing an exhibition that interprets the history of slavery at the plantation.

Da casa ao museu-casa: heranças do imigrante italiano no Brasil / From house to the house-museum: legacies of the Italian immigrant in Brazil

Carvalho, Karin Magnavita de 01 August 2018 (has links)
In the wide universe of museums, there is a typology that documents the history of inhabiting, articulated in the relationship between building, resident and collection, elements that also dialogue with the surrounding territory and society. Called house museums, these spaces preserve the residential environment, totally or partially, and evoke the passage of human groups that lived there. In Brazil, the houses of Italian immigrants open to visitation contribute to the knowledge of the history of the migratory phenomenon and the traditions related to the daily life. They are iconic places that expose layers of society, articulated in the memories of the buildings, the collections and the people that lived there, the residential and social enjoyment of spaces. Under the title \"From house to house-museum: heritage of the Italian immigrant in Brazil\", this study aims to clarify if the residences open to visitation in Brazil expose cultural heritages of the country of origin of its former inhabitants Italy considering the potential of extroversion of collections of a domestic nature, which expose the material and imaterial production of society.

“MOST HISTORIC HOUSES JUST SIT THERE”: ACTIVATING THE PRESENT AT HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUMS

Maust, Theodore January 2018 (has links)
Historic house museums (HHMs) are contradictory spaces, private places made public. They (often) combine the real with the reproduction. Drawing from object reverence, taxonomy, and tableaux over a century and a half of practice, the American HHM arrives in the present as a Frankenstein's monster of nostalgia. Chamounix Mansion has been a youth hostel since 1964. It has also been a historic house museum, though when it became one and when—if—it ever stopped being one is an open question. Chamounix is a space where the past, present, and future all share space, as guests move through historic spaces, have conversations about anything or nothing at all, and plan their next day, their next destination, their next major life move. It is a place that seems fertile for meaning-making. It also provides a fascinating case study of what HHMs have been and what they might become. The Friends of Chamounix Mansion employed the methods of other HHMs as it tried to achieve recognition as an HHM in the 1960s, but by the 1980s, they began claiming the hostel’s usage as another form of authenticity. As HHMs face a variety of challenges today, and seek to make meaning with visitors and neighbors alike, the example of Chamounix Mansion offers a case study of how embracing usage might offer new directions for meaning-making. / History

Designing for dream spaces : exploring digitally enhanced space for children's engagement with museum objects

Warpas, Katarzyna Bogusława January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents an investigation into the potential of digitally enhanced exhibition spaces to foster the engagement of children within family groups with museum objects on display, i.e. where physical contact is prohibited. The main focus is on the influence of digital enhancement on visitors’ engagement with artefacts and not on the digital elements themselves. This study has taken the mixed methods approach. It combines ethnographicallyinformed field studies with a design intervention within an overarching methodology of action research. In the review of literature, research from multiple fields including museum studies, interaction design and play research was brought together and examined from the perspective of exhibition design. This led to the development of the Social Dream Spaces Model. This model, which describes how visitors engage with museum objects, was used as the basis for a design intervention aimed at enhancing children’s engagement with exhibited artefacts. In-gallery participant observations were carried out in Bantock House Museum, Wolverhampton. Insights, based on data analysed from the perspective of the Social Dream Spaces Model, were used to develop a prototype of a digitally enhanced space, which was implemented into the existing exhibition. Data gathered in observations before and after the design intervention were compared in order to determine any changes in visitors’ responses to the exhibition. This study demonstrates the benefit of using the Social Dream Spaces Model for designing digitally enhanced exhibition spaces that promote children’s engagement with artefacts and social contact around them. The findings also confirm that designing subtle and nonintrusive digital enhancement can facilitate intergenerational interaction in exhibition spaces.

Fundação Crespi-Prado: trajetória de uma coleção museológica / Crespi-Prado Foundation: trajectory of a museological collection

Santos, Tamira Naia dos 19 August 2016 (has links)
This research studies a private collection, from its gathering, by a couple of the elite of the city of São Paulo, to its publicization, by the constitution of a foundation and the development of exhibitions in similar institutions in the city. The collection in question belongs to the Crespi-Prado Foundation, an institution created in 1975, by the initiative of Renata Crespi, widow of Fábio da Silva Prado (mayor of São Paulo between 1934 and 1938), to promote the Arts and Culture and to safeguard the collection built by the couple. Renata Crespi, daughter of an important Italian industrialist immigrated to Brazil, and her husband, member of one of the oldest and wealthiest families of the State of São Paulo, materialized the union of the new and old elites, a dimension that is perceived in their collection. Assembled during the first half of the 20th century, such collection is representative of a social practice of collecting that was spreading amongst the elite of the city, and can be considered one of its most extensive examples. To study the gathering of this collection, its institutionalization and its further musealization is the main object of this research, considering the role of the collecting couple to the city elite of their time and the importance of their initiative of creating one of the few foundations of the city to preserve a private artistic legacy through an institution of museological character.
