Théories scientifiques et représentation du paysage dans l’Art occidental de la première moitié du 19ème siècle / Scientific theories and representation of the landscape in the Western Art of the first half of the nineteenth century

La géologie connaît à partir de la fin du 18ème siècle un véritable essor dont les conséquences ne tarderont pas à apparaître dans la peinture de paysage de l’époque. Délaissant désormais les cabinets d’histoire naturelle, les naturalistes se mettent à chercher sur le terrain des indices pour comprendre le passé de notre terre et notamment son extrême ancienneté. Les artistes imitent leur démarche en se passionnant à leur tour aux phénomènes naturels comme les volcans, les glaciers ou tout simplement les falaises. Sous le prisme des découvertes effectuées en géosciences, il s’agira de déterminer l’influence de certaines théories scientifiques sur la peinture de paysage. Au nombre de quatre, ces doctrines contribueront dans une certaine mesure à moderniser ce genre pictural trop sclérosé par la tradition. Des personnalités comme Alexandre d’lt, Louis Agassiz, James Hutton ou encore George Cuvier ont avec leurs doctrines scientifiques profondément changé la vision de notre globe terrestre quant à son histoire, son évolution et ses mécanismes. Notre étude qui abordera de nombreuses facettes des sciences de la terre comme la glaciologie et la paléontologie tentera de mettre en évidence la portée de ces nouvelles disciplines sur le développement de la peinture de paysage de la fin du 18ème siècle jusqu’aux années 1860. / From the final years of the eighteenth century, Geology enjoys a rapid development whose consequences won’t take long to react on the landscape painting of the time. Leaving from then on the study for the outer world, Naturalists set to look for clues on the ground to understand the past of our planet and particularly his old age. Artists imitate their reasoning and are fascinated as well by the naturals phenomenon like the volcanoes, the glaciers or simply the cliffs. Under the prism of the discoveries made in geosciences, it will be a matter to determine the influence of some scientific theories on the landscape painting. These doctrines will contribute to modernize this pictorial genre still too blocked by the tradition. Personalities such as Humboldt, Agassiz, Hutton and Cuvier have with their ideas profoundly changed the vision of our planet about his history, his evolution and his mechanisms. Our study which tackles some aspects of the geosciences like glaciology a paleontology will try to bring to the fore the range of these new scientific disciplines on the development of the landscape painting from the final years of the eighteenth century to the 1860 years.

According to Humboldt, language is a typical cultural activity which involves the act of creation (Erzeugung). It is also an important activity which reveals the nature of man. In the first part of this research, we try to sum up Humboldt's analysis on creation into four main theses: (1) the true definition of language must be based on speaking, rather than dead products such as words and rules. As a result, the definition of language can only be a genetic one and must be related to a certain idea of "activity;" (2) speaking is an act through which the speaker expresses his thought by using different sounds. In other words, man uses speech sounds as tools of expression. Thus, language is an act of producing tools rather than the tools produced; (3) only articulated sounds are capable of expressing thoughts. If we want to use them to express our ideas, we must compel our vocal organs and produce sounds with patiicular sound-forms. In Humboldt's words, this involves a process of Bildung in which we combine matter and form to produce tools with particular forms. (4) To express a certain thought, we have to put words together. These grammatically formed words, all as elements, enter into the sentence and form a new unity. A closer look at this operation shows that words acquire their grammatical functions through a special mental act: the mind creates a sentence to express the thought, but by the same act opposes itself to the created. From this point of view, language is a synthesis which brings elements together to create novelties. / At the very first glance, Humboldt's philosophy of language is just a series of tedious, laborious examination of linguistic facts. In addition, the idealistic terminologies he employed set up a barrier for those who want to understand his theory. Through our investigations, we show that his philosophy of language can be seen as the foundation of a full-fledged philosophy of culture with the analysis on creation providing all the building blocks. Humboldt reminds us of the freedom of the individual, and stresses on the importance of the self-consciousness of any human activity. As an educational reform is currently undergoing in Hong Kong, the philosophy of Humboldt can act as a timely reminder for all of us. / In the second part of this research, we follow the example of Humboldt and start a series of investigations to show how Cantonese-speaking community uses different sound-forms to form words and sentences. Our investigations will focus on the activity of the listener. We try to prove that there is a change of role of the listener whenever he understands a certain chain of words. A listener always plays a double-role. He must speak in order to understand. Trace Elemental Variation in Dosidicus Gigas Statoliths Using LA-ICP-MS

Range expansion events of the Humboldt squid reveal our inadequate understanding of populations of this species. Despite recent hatching, reproductive, tagging, genetic and dietary studies of Dosidicus gigas, much speculation remains concerning geographic migration, stock assessment and habitat preferences. This study provides evidence that statolith trace elemental variations can be useful in distinguishing among geographic populations. Specimens were collected from the Galapagos Islands, southern California, and Washington State. A dissection method was recorded and published. By using laser ablation methods, discrete measurements of 10 elements were collected at 6 to 7 ablation sites covering embryonic, paralarval, juvenile and adult stages. Analysis of Variance revealed important ontogenic elemental variations among ablation locations. Multivariate Analysis of Variance, ordination techniques and discriminant function analysis with permutation testing were all utilized to compare and characterize the variations found in elemental concentrations. Significant ontogenic variations were found for 8 out of the 10 focus elements; this is the first report for 5 of these elements for this species. The geographic populations were effectively classified as distinct group for the first time using these methods. Elemental fingerprint signatures were found to be significantly different at multiple ontogenic growth regions of the statolith. Seattle and California paralarvae exhibited similar elemental signatures despite significant differences in those found in the embryonic core and juvenile regions of the statolith. These methods are a useful tool in providing stock assessment and can be improved for use in future population dynamics models.

Humboldt versus Neoliberalism : University Academics’ Perception of Higher Education Changes in Germany and England

The name ‘Humboldt’ is associated with various ideals such as the unity of teaching and research, the freedom to teach and to learn and the community of teachers and students and used to stand for a unified idea of the university. Recent developments and changes like widening participation in and the marketisation of higher education related to the emergence of neoliberalism have challenged those old ideals. Through creating a Humboldt University model based on Humboldtian ideals and a Neoliberal University model reflecting neoliberal ideas the study seeks to illustrate the main changes that have happened. It then evaluates the developments by putting them against the German (the origin of Humboldt’s ideas) and English university (the first to marketise higher education). The ones to sense the developments and changes the most are the university academics. Therefore, it was chosen to review the former through the eyes of the latter. Thus, the study offers a glimpse of how university academics at the German and English institution/institute perceive the changes deriving from comparing the above-mentioned model. How do they relate to the Humboldtian ideals? How do they evaluate recent developments and related discourses in higher education? Are there connections between the countries’ university traditions and their perception? The main findings suggest that academics at the English institute believe more in the old ideals than the German academics who blame mainly massification for its infeasibility. It also shows that recent discourses and their termination are understood differently by the academics. For a new unifying idea of the university, opposing perceptions like the ones examined would need to be brought in line. Can there be one identity of the university?
