Soil Salinity Abatement Following Hurricane IkeMueller, Ryan 2012 August 1900 (has links)
In September 2008 Hurricane Ike hit the Texas Gulf Coast with a force stronger than the category 2 storm at which it was rated. With a 3.8 m (12.5 ft) storm surge, the agricultural industry in the area was devastated. The goal of this research was to determine the length of time required to reduce the salt levels brought by the storm surge to near pre-hurricane levels. To do this, four sets of samples were taken across two years and analyzed for salinity using the saturated paste extract method.
The initial salt levels in November 2008 had an electrical conductivity (ECe) of the inundated soils as high as 26.7 dS/m. Fifty-four percent of the soils sampled in the 0-15 cm horizons and 9% in the 15-30 cm horizons of the edge area had an ECe >= 4 dS/m. In the surge area 79% of the soils sampled in the 0-15 cm horizons and 30% in the 15-30 cm horizons had an ECe >= 4 dS/m.
In April 2009, 38% of the soils sampled in the 0-15 cm horizons and 13% in the 15-30 cm horizons of the edge area had an ECe >= 4 dS/m. In the surge area 71% of the soils sampled in the 0-15 cm horizons and 39% in the 15-30 cm horizons had an ECe >= 4 dS/m.
By December 2009, none of the soils sampled in the edge area had an ECe >= 4 dS/m. In the surge area 21% of the soils sampled in the 0-15 cm horizons and 33% in the 15-30 cm horizons had an ECe >= 4 dS/m. By October 2010, all soils sampled had leached sufficient salts to be classified as non-saline to very slightly saline soils.
Utilizing the November 2008 data set, 28 random samples were selected for exchangeable Na percent (ESP) in order to develop the ESP-SAR (Na adsorption ratio) predictive equation, ESP= 1.19(SAR)^0.82. The SAR-ESP relationship is statistically significant (95% confidence level), with a correlation coefficient of 0.964 (df=26).

Playing the Trump Card : A qualitative rhetorical analysis of President Trump’s crisis communication on Hurricane MariaHolmqvist, Julia January 2018 (has links)
In this study, a qualitative rhetorical analysis is done on U.S. president Donald Trump’s crisis communication on Hurricane Maria, which was an Atlantic hurricane that struck areas such as Puerto Rico and Dominica in the autumn of 2017. Given that the former is an unincorporated territory of the U.S., the need for effective relief measures by the Trump administration became of particular importance there. However, in the media, the actual response by the administration was widely criticised as being slow and inefficient by actors like the relief group Oxfam and the humanitarian organisation Refugees International. Therefore, this study critically evaluates Trump’s crisis communication strategies on the hurricane to assess their success. The material consists of statements by Trump in both traditional and social media through official remarks and tweets, which are analysed through the crisis communication theories of image repair theory and situational crisis communication theory. In doing so, of interest is also to examine whether any differences can be seen in the strategies used by Trump in these two kinds of media channels. To address the hurricane, the findings showed that Trump mainly used the crisis communication strategies of corrective action, bolstering, defeasibility and attack accuser from image repair theory and compensation, reminder, ingratiation, excuse and attack the accuser from situational crisis communication theory. Moreover, no distinctive differences were found in which strategies Trump used in the respective channels, even if the attacks on Twitter were often more aggressive. While both positive and negative evaluations could be made of how Trump used these strategies overall, the main conclusion of the study is that his crisis communication was largely ineffective due to the strategies sometimes being contradictory and inconsistent.

Post-Disaster Gender Based Violence : An Abductive Case Study of Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti EarthquakeTomasdotter, Villemo January 2018 (has links)
Previous research has shown a post-disaster increase of Gender Based Violence [GBV], suggesting a need for further investigation of the phenomena and its causes. This research draws together a wide-ranging collection of secondary data sets concerning disasters and gender based violence. It analyses the social environment in post-disaster settings that breeds an increase in GBV with focus on Sexual Gender Based Violence[SGBV] and Intra Personal Violence [IPV]. Through a comparison of two case studies: (a) post-earthquake Haiti and (b) post-hurricane Katrina. The cases are analysed through an analytical framework constructed out of three theories, Eco-feminism, Hyper-masculinity and Situational Theory, which together could give a trustworthy explanation of the phenomena. The findings show that similar factors were prevalent in both cases, and in turn provides insights for the abductively derived framework that relates the causal mechanisms behind the phenomena of post-disaster gender-based violence, building on the commonalities between social environments and structures in the cases. In particular, it was found that a patriarchal root structure and high rates of frustration both provided explanatory causal mechanisms for increased GBV. Though changes in environments can affect the prevalence of GBV as it can provide easier access of victims and lower the risk of penalties in relation to the crimes. In order to address GBV associated with future disasters, post-disaster plans need to adapt a gender mainstreamed approach with focus on safe housing and rapid rebuilding processes for the grass root level.

Previous issue date: 2010-02-26 / This work presents the study of atmospheric conditions associated the occurrence of Hurricane Catarina and two study cases. The Catarina occurred in March 2004 and reached the coast of southern Brazil.The other case studies correspond to cut-off lows that occurred in May 2005 and September 2008. It was used the WRF model, version 3.0, to obtain the meteorological fields during the period of occurrence of these events and images of the geostationary satellite GOES-12 and QuikSCAT. For Hurricane Catarina, data from surface meteorological stations were also analyzed. Initially, the study cases consisted of cut-off lows preceded by extratropical cyclones in the South Atlantic Ocean. When they shut the western flow, they occurred at the interface of different patterns of vertical variation of horizontal wind in the layer between 850-200hPa and showed closed cyclonic circulation at middle levels. At high levels, it was observed bifurcation of the jet with a trough quasi-stationnary near the southern coast of Brazil. The observed atmospheric blocking together with the thermodynamic and kinematic configurations of each case contributed to the occurrence of tropical transition and subsequent formation of Hurricane Catarina, in March 2004, while the other cut-off lows dissipated. / Neste trabalho é feito o estudo sobre as condições atmosféricas associadas à ocorrência do furacão Catarina e a dois casos de estudo. O Catarina ocorreu em março de 2004 e atingiu o litoral da região sul do Brasil. Os outros casos de estudo correspondem a baixas desprendidas que ocorreram em maio de 2005 e setembro de 2008. Foi utilizado o modelo WRF, versão 3.0, para a obtenção dos campos meteorológicos durante o período de ocorrência destes eventos e imagens do satélite geoestacionário GOES-12 e do QuikSCAT. Para o furacão Catarina, foram também analisados dados de estações meteorológicas de superfície. Os casos de estudo, inicialmente, corresponderam a baixas desprendidas precedidas por ciclones extratropicais no Oceano Atlântico Sul. Ao se isolarem do escoamento de oeste, ocorreram na interface de padrões distintos de variação vertical do vento horizontal na camada entre 850-200hPa e apresentaram circulação ciclônica fechada em níveis médios. Em altos níveis, foi observada bifurcação do jato com um cavado quase estacionário nas proximidades da costa sul do Brasil. Os bloqueios atmosféricos observados, juntamente com as configurações cinemáticas e termodinâmicas de cada caso, contribuíram para a ocorrência da transição tropical e posterior formação do furacão Catarina, em março de 2004, enquanto que as outras baixas desprendidas se dissiparam.

The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of evacuation from Hurricane Andrew in August of 1993 and subsequent relocation following the storm on the young children of six families from Homestead Air Force Base, Florida.
Interviews were conducted over a three-month period; these were supplemented with samples of the children's drawings and observations of the children at play.
The resulting case studies illustrate various coping strategies utilized by the six families to deal with the loss of home, goods, and community in the wake of the storm and the ways in which these impacted the young children in each family. Parental coping styles were an influence on the children's ability to make the adjustments necessary during this especially stressful transition.

“Economic damage, such as damage to property and infra-structure, from hurricane surges depends on two factors 1) the depth of coastal inundation and 2) the area covered by the surge” (Irish et. al 2007). Typically, damage estimates are developed after hurricanes have dissipated. To have the ability to predict hurricane damage in advance based upon various physical parameters would be a technical advance that could aid vulnerable coastal communities with hurricane planning. This thesis advances this goal forward by relating “Total Normalized Damage” to “Surge Scale” along with other key parameters. In this thesis Total Normalized Damages are compared to Surge Scale in three statistically significant ways: Un-separated Comparison, Separated Comparison and Separated Comparison without “micro-canes”. An attempt at the surge damage function has been presented in this thesis as a cornerstone of the research work contained herein. This thesis also examines the effect of different damage components and their uncertainties on Total Normalized Damage. Such damage estimates include wind damage, surge damage, and inland flooding, which were separated into individual damage categories.
