Investigation Of Waterhammer Problems In The Penstocks Of Small Hydropower Plants

Waterhammer is an unsteady hydraulic problem which is commonly found in closed conduits of hydropower plants, water distribution networks and liquid pipeline systems. Due to either a malfunction of the system or inadequate operation conditions, pipeline may collapse or burst erratically resulting in substantial damages, and human losses in some cases. In this thesis, time dependent flow situations in the penstocks of small hydropower plants are investigated. A software, HAMMER, that utilizes method of characteristics for solving nonlinear differential equations of transient flow is used in the study. In two case studies, various operation conditions such as load rejection, load acceptance and instant load rejection are studied. The parameters and situations affecting pressure and turbine speed rises are investigated. Computed and available measured values are found to be very close. Also, differences between waterhammer responses of the Francis and Pelton turbines are revealed. Finally, specific protective measures are suggested to either diminish and/or avoid the harmful effects of waterhammer problems in small hydropower plants.

Use Of Air Chambers Against Waterhammer In Penstocks

All pipeline systems are susceptible to water hammer that can cripple critical infrastructure. One effective method to relieve excessive waterhammer pressures in pipelines is to use air chambers. This study aims to develop an empirical procedure for the quick analysis of penstock-turbine systems to determine dimensions and operating conditions of air-chambers that can effectively diminish the transient phenomena after sudden changes of flow rate in the system. A numerical study has been carried out by obtaining repeated solutions for variable system parameters using a commercial software. The relief brought by air chambers is found to approach to an asymptotic value for increasing chamber volumes. It is possible to determine the required chamber volume for a given discharge to limit the waterhammer pressures at a prescribed level in a given penstock-turbine system using the charts produced in the study.

[pt] Neste trabalho, apresentam-se modelos mecânicos para previsão da integridade estrutural de tubulações anelásticas conduzindo líquidos, submetidas a transientes hidráulicos. A descrição do fenômeno de transiente hidráulico é feita com base em duas formulações unidimensionais: uma acoplada e outra desacoplada. A formulação acoplada considera a interação dinâmica fluido-estrutura entre os movimentos do fluido e do tubo, enquanto que a desacoplada refere-se ao modelo tradicional de golpe de ariete. A integridade da tubulação é modelada com base na Mecânica do Dano Continuo. O comportamento anelástico da parede do tubo assim como o dano induzido pela deformação anelástica são descritos por uma teoria constitutiva com variáveis internas e forte respaldo termodinâmico. A teoria engloba um grande número de equações constitutivas encontradas na literatura e permite descrever diferentes respostas mecânicas numa mesma estrutura matemática. As equações resultantes para ambos os modelos - acoplado e desacoplado - formam um sistema não linear de equações diferenciais parciais hiperbólicas. Apesar da forte não linearidade, mostra-se que métodos numéricos clássicos podem ser empregados para resolver as equações quando se utiliza uma técnica de decomposição do operador. No trabalho, emprega-se entre outros o método de Glimm. Exemplos numéricos que retratam a evolução do dano induzida por transientes de pressão em tubulações elasto-viscopláticas são apresentados e analisados. Comparações realizadas entre as previsões dos modelos e entre simulações com e sem dano permitem, na análise, caracterizar as influências do acoplamento fluido-estrutura e do dano. / [en] This work presents mechanical models for structural failure prediction of compliant inelastic pipings conveying liquids, submitted to hydraulic transients. Hydraulic transients are described based on two, a coupled and an uncoupled, onedimensional formulations. The coupled formulation takes into account the dynamical fluid-structure interaction between fluid flow and pipewall motions, whereas the uncoupled one refers to the well-known waterhammer model. Piping integrity is modelled on the basis of the Continuum bamage Mechanics. Both pipewall inelastic mechanical behavior and damage induced by inelastic deformations are described by an internal variable constitutive theory with strong thermodynamical support. It encompasses a great number of constitutive equations found in the literature and allows the treatment of several different mechanical responses within a same mathematical framework. The resulting equations of both coupled and uncoupled transient models forma non linear system of hyperbolic partial differential equations. In spite of its strong non linearity, it is shown that classical numerical methods can be used for solving the equations whether a operator splitting technique is employed. Among others, Glimm s scheme has been used in this work. Numerical examples concerning the damage evolution induced by pressure transients in elasto-viscoplastic pipings are presented and analysed. Comparisons between the predictions of the models and simulations with and without damage are presented, so that the fluid-structure coupling and the damage influences on the analysis are investigated.

Calibração e detecção de vazamentos em modelos de sistemas hidráulicos no escoamento transitório / Leak detection and calibration of transient hydraulic system models

A ocorrência de elevados índices de perdas por vazamentos em sistemas de abastecimento de água é frequentemente ligada às inúmeras quebras de tubulações originadas em decorrência de elevados níveis de pressão atuantes. O controle efetivo de tais perdas requer a detecção e localização dos vazamentos para uma rápida reparação do sistema. Neste sentido, a consideração de análises hidráulicas no escoamento transitório tem se revelado especialmente útil aos propósitos de calibração e detecção de vazamentos. Tal análise pode revelar substancial quantidade de informações sobre as propriedades físicas e o nível de integridade do sistema, pois as ondas de pressão resultantes são afetadas pelos diversos dispositivos e fenômenos, incluindo os vazamentos. Assim, o presente trabalho visa o estudo dos transitórios hidráulicos para a calibração e detecção de vazamentos em modelos de sistemas de distribuição de água. Para tanto, são utilizados dados de redes hipotéticas e de laboratório, e modelos inversos resolvidos por métodos de busca global e local. Devido o emprego de tubos plásticos no circuito de laboratório, o clássico modelo da coluna elástica demonstrou-se ineficiente na reprodução do comportamento hidráulico de tal sistema. Resultados satisfatórios foram obtidos somente com um modelo hidráulico que considere o comportamento viscoelástico dos materiais dos tubos do circuito experimental. / The occurrence of large leakage losses in water supply systems has been frequently linked with pipe breaks resulting from high pressures levels in pipes. Efficient location of leakages is required in order to effectively control water losses and quickly repair the system. Analysis of hydraulic transients has been particularly useful for calibration and leak detection purposes. System observation for such analysis can reveal a substantial amount of information concerning physical properties and the integrity of the system, since water hammer waves are affected by different features and phenomena, including leaks. Thus, this research focuses on hydraulic transients for leak detection and calibration of water distribution system models. These objectives are achieved using data obtained from experiments performed on an experimental facility and numerical experiments on hypothetical networks. Inverse methods were based on both global and local search methods. Classic water hammer theory proved to be imprecise in describing the observed behavior of the hydraulic system composed of plastic pipes. Satisfactorily results were obtained with a hydraulic transient solver considering viscoelastic behavior of the pipe material.

Estudo analítico e experimental dos fenômenos transitórios ocasionados por grandes bolsas de ar confinadas nos sistemas hidráulicos / Analitic and experimental study of the transitory phenomena generated by entrapped air pockets in the hydraulic systems

Uma das características dos transitórios hidráulicos é a presença de ar aprisionado durante a ocorrência do fenômeno. Se uma tabulação não estiver satisfatorimente projetada ou não for adequadamente cheia e purgada, grandes quantidades de ar poderão ficar aprisionadas. Caso esses bolsões se desloquem de um local para o outro, proporcionarão acelerações locais que resultam em altas velocidades e, subsequentemente, em altas pressões transitórias. As sobrepressões geradas podem ser de 2,2 vezes maiores que a pressão estática dos sistema, conforme verificou-se no estudo experimental. Dessa forma, há a necessidade do estabelecimento de metodologias de aplicação prática e segura (modelos rígido e elástico) que permitam estimar a magnitude das pressões transitórias, pois não há solução analítica para esse problema. No presente trabalho, apresentou-se uma adimensionalização do modelo elástico, com a incorporação de dois números adimensionais independentes (&#960 6 e &#960 7). No entanto, tais metodologias devem ser validas experimentalmente, haja visto que hipóteses simplificadoras de cálculo são necessárias para a modelagem matemática. O modelo rígido de coluna líquida variável (MCLV), além de fácil programação, é viável sem prejuízos nos resultados esperados . No estudo experimental foi também realizada uma análise de sensibilidade com relação aos fatores intervenientes no sistema hidráulico. / One of the reasons for the transient behavior is the presence of air confined during these alterations. When the pipes are not properly designed or if it is not completely full or air bleeding, large amounts of air may be confined in the system. Pockets of air can cause severe transient behavior if such pockets deslocate from one place to the other giving rise to local acceleration and consequently large velocities and pressures. The higher pressure may be of the order of 2,2 times the static pressure in the system, as it was confirmed by the experimental procedure. Thus, this paper considers pratical and safe procedure (rigid or elastic models) that permit calculation of transient pressures given that there is no analytical solution available. On the present study, it was presented a dimensionless form of the elastic model, with the incorporation of two aditional independent numbers (&#960 6 and &#960 7). Besides the easiness of programation, the rigid model of variable fluid column is viable without prejudice to the expected results. This study also conducts a sensitivity analysis on the various factors involved in the problem.

Effects of hydraulic loading and laundry detergent on the operation of aerobic package treatment systems

This study focused on three potential problems with the operation of aerobic package treatment systems: hydraulic retention time, laundry detergents, and hydraulic surges. To determine the effect of hydraulic retention time on system performance, six bench scale activated sludge systems were constructed. Wastewater from an actual residence was collected twice per week and fed to the small activated sludge systems. Two of the systems had a hydraulic retention time of 2 days, two had a hydraulic retention time of 1 day and two had a hydraulic retention time of 0.5 days. Effluent quality was stable and good with regard to chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia (NH)-N) and seemed to be independent of hydraulic retention time. All of the systems performed well, despite considerable variability in influent strength. To study the effect of high concentrations of laundry detergents on the operation of package treatment systems, three of the six laboratory systems were fed high concentrations of detergent. Other than some residual COD from the detergent, no effect on system performance was observed. The final component of the study was the modification of an existing package treatment system to equalize flows from an automatic washing machine. After a month of operation the modified system produced a more constant effluent quality, than did the unmodified system. The field system, with and without modification, had a low mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration (35 mg/L). This was probably the result of the long hydraulic retention time. As a result of the low MLSS the system, with and without modification, did not meet Virginia effluent requirements for BODs, TSS or D.O. or generally accepted levels of NH₃-N. / Master of Science

Waterhammer is an undesirable event, caused by sudden flow changes in a confined pipe system. When it occurs, its consequences can be very costly and even sometimes deadly. In general, it may be encountered in the penstocks of hydropower plants, water transmission lines, water networks, etc. Therefore, the operation guidelines of the hydropower plants should be defined correctly. In this thesis, waterhammer problems in pumped storage hydropower plants are investigated. Time dependent flow conditions in the penstocks are studied by the help of computer software, HAMMER. The software solves nonlinear differential equations by using method of characteristics. Firstly, hydraulic transients for various operational cases are investigated using some scenarios. Then a surge tank, protective device for waterhammer, is added to the system and for the same operational cases, hydraulic transients are studied again. Finally, the results obtained from the operation of the system with and without surge tank are compared. Wind-hydro hybrid systems are also included in the study.

[pt] O estudo de fenômenos transitórios em sistemas hidráulicos está presente em diversos ramos da engenharia, encontra-se na área de hidrelétricas e na indústria do petróleo. O presente trabalho apresenta uma análise comparativa deste fenômeno utilizando três abordagens de modelagem distintas: o clássico método das características, a técnica de grafos de ligação e o tratamento através do fluxo de potência. No caso do método das características emprega-se o procedimento proposto por Streeter. Na modelagem através de grafo de ligação adota-se a analogia generalizada entre os sistemas fluido, mecânico e elétrico. Na representação pelo fluxo de potência acopla-se módulos previamente desenvolvidos considerando as relações de causa e efeito entre os componentes de um sistema. Todos os métodos foram implementados em Matlab e foram testados e comparados a partir de simulações em dois sistemas simples compostos de um reservatório, linha fluida e válvula. Os resultados obtidos através da metodologia de fluxo de potência aproximam-se dos encontrados pelas abordagens tradicionais. / [en] The study of transitory phenomena in hydraulic systems is present in several branches of the engineering, in the hydroelectric power stations area and in the petroleum industry. The present work introduce a comparative analysis of this phenomenon using three approaches of distinct modeling: the classic characteristics method, the technique of bond graphs and the treatment through the power flow. In the case of characteristics method is used the procedure proposed by Streeter. In the modeling through bond graphs is adopted the generalized analogy among the fluid, mechanic and electric systems. In the representation by power flow modules previously developed are coupled considering the cause and effect relationships between components of one system. All methods were implemented in Matlab and were tested and compared from simulations in two simple systems composed of a reservoir, fluid lines and valve. The results obtained through the methodology of power flow are near of the discoveries by the traditional approaches.
