Measuring the Impact of Information Technology on Value and Productivity using a Process-Based Approach: The case for RFID Technology

There has been a lot of research addressing the relationship between Information Technology (IT) investments and productivity. Most of the work has been based on firm-level metrics such as total IT investment. We present what we believe is one of the first attempts to create a systematic methodology to assess the impact of IT in business process performance metrics. Our approach builds on the MIT Process Handbook as a basis to both guide the analysis and capture the resulting knowledge for future use. We will present preliminary results on how to use such methodology to analyze the impact of a given IT technology, namely RFID (radio frequency identification devices), in performance metrics of a consumer packaged goods company. We are interested in looking at how IT may impact performance metrics such as productivity, cost and value. We believe our methodology can help CPG companies prioritize their investments. We show results on how the specialization features of the MIT Process Handbook can incorporate performance metrics to help assess such investments in RFID

Technological change and the productivity paradox : the management of new technologies in UK retail banks

Successful implementation of new technologies is necessary for survival in today's increasingly competitive banking environment. The banking sector is now the UK's largest investor in new technology. As a result of de-regulation and new technological opportunities, the dominant market position of the traditional banks is under threat from new market entrants. Such organisations are harnessing the latest technology to develop their services, and are not constrained by the costs of running national branch networks and integrating a diverse historical legacy of incompatible computer systems. This thesis addresses the question of why the massive investment by UK retail banks in information technology is not being translated into significant productivity gains. The issue is referred to in the literature as the IT productivity paradox. It will be argued that the importance of the banks to the economy as a whole, and the position of the industry as the UK's largest investor in new technology, make it a particularly suitable arena in which to study this phenomenon. Six empirical case studies of recent new technology projects are analysed by the development of grounded theory. The findings indicate that dysfunctional organisational structures and cultures, together with poor management of expertise, combine to sabotage change and constrain the potential of new technology projects. Most significantly, a lack of organisational learning is contributing to the paradox. Even successful projects had limited impact because the lessons learned were not disseminated throughout the organisation. The study concludes that the full potential offered by information technology will continue to elude the banks until their apparently complacent attitude towards organisational change is addressed.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This paper discusses factors that contribute to information technology (IT) investment not paying off as might have been expected. The main purpose is to describe this IT _productivity paradox. The paper explores ideas that align organizations' business strategies and information technology as a key to achieving improved productivity. Which are possible to properly measure in terms of the financial results? The main aims and objectives are to find out why managers invest in IT; whether there is a phenomenon such as an IT productivity paradox; whether IT pays off as expected; and how IT impacts on organizations. The study will investigate options for proper management of information technology and data structures. It is necessary to ascertain whether ensuring proper IT implementation has a positive impact on productivity, leading to increased innovation and performance. The research design builds on research done on the use of IT in organizations, usmg a qualitative research method. This research paper looks at organizational issues such as IT management styles, political and ethical issues, and work settings. The paper looks at organizations across the service and manufacturing sectors to determine their production, innovation, and profits into their existing organizational processes and how technology is interpreted. A group of IT users, IT managers and analysts were used as a sample to study the way IT managers and knowledge workers encounter information technology in organizations. The research method used in this research paper is called the informant approach, to take points of entry IT users would provide. This means that the interviewee, in this case the IT user was questioned on the use of information technology tools to gather information. In this study the aim was to conduct interviews with IT users and those they work with about their experiences. The sampling population was selected on the basis that they use this technology. In the data collection method a second interview was used to gather first-hand responses from the respondents to help me consolidate the information gathered to validate and ensure that it is reliable. The validity and reliability aspect of this research paper are based on the main sources of data and interpretation and adopts coding as the main technique of analysis. The internal reliability of this research methodology concern itself with the research methods that were used within this research paper. Measures to be taken in the paper are to obtain internal reliability in systematic gathering of data. The last part of this paper presents the conclusions and recommendations for changes to be made by managers and those investing in IT. IT managers should plan strategically when dealing with sales and marketers in order to put business needs before the needs of IT or systems. Technology should fit business needs rather than the business adjusted to fit the technology. IT should not cost an organization any additional profit it generates. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Belegging in Informasietegnologie skyn nie so betalend te wees as wat aanvanklik verwag is nie. Excessive use of information technologies can make the employee feel stressed and thus compromise their results and consequently the objectives of the organization. Stress resulting from the excessive use of technology is known as technosurgery, which can significantly affect several factors of the organization, among them the perceived productivity of the technologies by the collaborators. Some aspects can be considered as inhibitors of the tecnoestresse, as, for example, the resilience, extrinsic motivation and dependence of the technology for the accomplishment of the tasks. This study examined how these characteristics influence the stress of information overload and the invasion of privacy over the perceived productivity of information technology. Through a quantitative approach, the data were collected through a research instrument with the answers of 354 questionnaires. It is concluded that individual resilience negatively influences technoinvasion, which, in turn, negatively influences IT productivity and that IT dependence to perform tasks positively influences techno-load such as technoinvasion. / A grande preocupação das organizações hoje é melhorar a produtividade de seus colaboradores e o uso das tecnologias da informação tem um notório papel para que esse objetivo seja alcançado. O uso excessivo das tecnologias de informação podem fazer com que o colaborador se sinta estressado e, assim, compromenta seus resultados e consequentemente os objetivos da organização. O estresse resultante do uso excessivo da tecnologia é conhecido como tecnoestresse. Tecnosobrecarga e tecnoinvasão são criadores de estresse e pode afetar de maneira considerável vários fatores da organização, entre eles a produtividade percebida das tecnologias pelos colaboradores. Alguns aspectos podem ser considerados como inibidores do tecnoestresse, como, por exemplo, a resiliência, motivação extrínseca e dependência da tecnologia para a realização das tarefas. Este estudo analisou como essas características influenciam o estresse da sobrecarga de informações e a invasão de privacidade sobre a produtividade percebida da tecnologia da informação. Através de uma abordagem quantitativa, os dados foram coletados por meio de um instrumento de pesquisa com obtenção das respostas de 354 questionários. Conclui-se que a resiliência individual influencia negativamente a tecnoinvasão que, por sua vez, influencia negativamente a produtividade da TI e que a dependência de TI para a realização das tarefas influencia positivamente a tecnosobrecarga como a tecnoinvasão

The interest in business benefits is an area that is constantly growing, especially in regard to the development of IT systems. As a result of this, it may be important to study the phenomenon and identify which factors and components are important for an organization to investigate when implementing a new IT system. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate organizational value creation during the implementation of a new IT system. This is done by studying system X and discovering its potential effects, as well as capturing relevant factors and describing their relationships to an organization. To investigate this area, we have conducted a qualitative case study that is consistently grounded in data. The data that we have collected throughout the work has been obtained from semi-structured interviews with daily users, as well as developers of system X. The primary findings for this study that have been discovered are mainly five factors that can affect business benefits. The overarching theme that has emerged is that communication is a large part that permeates most factors, although there are other important aspects that contribute to understanding business benefits.
