Re-writing Ariadne : following the thread of literary and artistic representations of Ariadne's abandonment

Schoess, Ann-Sophie January 2018 (has links)
This thesis takes Ariadne's abandonment as a case study in order to examine the literary processes of reception that underlie the transmission of classical myth in different eras and cultural contexts - from Classical Antiquity through the Italian Renaissance. Rather than focusing on the ways in which visual representations of Ariadne relate to literary treatments, it draws attention to the literary reliance on a cultural framework, shared by writer and reader, that enables dynamic storytelling. It argues that literary variation of the myth is central to its successful transmission, not least because it allows for appropriations and adaptations that can be made to fit new social and religious parameters, such as Christian conventions in the Middle Ages. In focusing on the important role played by the visual arts in the classical tradition, this research further challenges the still prevalent misconception that the visual arts are secondary to literature, and refutes the common assumption that the relationship between image and text is unidirectional. It highlights the visual impulses leading to paradigm shifts in the literary treatment of the abandonment narrative, and examines the ways in which writers engage with the visual tradition in order to re-shape the ancient narrative. Throughout, attention is drawn to the visual and cultural framework shared by ancient writers and readers, and to the lack of engagement with this framework in traditional classical scholarship. Through its focus on the literary narratives' visuality and mutability, this thesis offers a new paradigm for studying classical myth and its reception.

Traduzindo com imagens: a imagem como reescritura, a ilustração como tradução / Translating with images: the image as rewriting, the illustration as translation

Pereira, Nilce Maria 16 December 2008 (has links)
This study involves the fields of translation studies and visual studies, suggesting an analysis of book illustration as a form of (intersemiotic) translation of the text in illustrated books. Firstly, it examines book illustration in its relationship to literature, by discussing the types of association in which they can engage, the ways through which pictorial elements are used in meaningful constructions, norms guiding visual representation and the function of illustration. This is aimed especially at establishing the grounds for viewing illustration as translation. In the second section of the study, illustration is examined exclusively as translation, by discussing the reasons why it can be regarded as such and the ways through which the pictures translate the text. In the final section, the results are applied to book illustrations in translated versions of the works under consideration, which include well-known illustrated novels originally written in English.

The document is discussing the issue of the computer vision with ability to character recignition in the image. Wavelet transform is used for preprocessing the image. Pixel energy feature is firstly used for searchich candidate text pixels. Density region growing method is then used to collect candidate pixels to the separate regions, which will be candidate text regions. Several of the features are calculated over the regions and the SVM classifier is used to derive, if the region is really a text region or not.

PowerPoint Use in The English Classroom : A study on teacher beliefs and their reported use of PowerPoint in Swedish secondary ESL education / PowerPoint användning i engelska-klassrummet : En studie om lärares uppfattningar och deras rapporterade användning av PowerPoint i det engelska högstadie klassrummet

Jatta Kölin, David, Johansson, Caroline January 2022 (has links)
PowerPoint is a popular presentation software that is often used in educational settings, however, there is a need for further instruction on how to use the software effectively to facilitate learning. Prior research on the use of PowerPoint in education has been inconclusive as it has been focused on the presence or lack of presence in the classroom, rather than its practical implementation. The current study aims to investigate teachers’ beliefs of using PowerPoint in the classroom, for what purpose they use colors, and image in text in PowerPoint, and to what extent their reported design choices are in line with learning theories related to color, and image and text. To do this, we have interviewed four Swedish ESL teachers and conducted a complimentary survey with 47 ESL teachers. The results show that both survey participants and interviewees considered PowerPoint to be a useful digital tool in the classroom. The survey participants used PowerPoint for language instruction while the interviewees used it for content knowledge. Even if both the survey and interview participants reported practices partially corresponded with current research, it seemed like their design choices were based on instinctive or implicit understanding. With an explicit knowledge of how to design PowerPoint to facilitate learning, teachers could use PowerPoint as a pedagogical tool.

The fact that the number of children and young people in association sports has decreased has been a problem for several years, nowadays it is especially martial arts that still struggle with this. The purpose of the work is to investigate how, with information based on theories such as: rhetoric, text and image in collaboration as well as nudging, I can increase the interest and understanding of the importance of martial arts for children among parents, this in order to increase the number of active in martial arts over time. The text design problem is that parents do not understand the benefits of martial arts in children, nor do they have information about what is available. The work therefore works with one of the UN's (UN, Global Goals for Sustainable Development) sustainability goal 3 – health and well-being. The empirical material has been collected through a survey in which parents of children between 7–12 years of age have been asked to participate anonymously, interviews, an environmental analysis and finally an expert panel. The work resulted in two final designs, a digital and a printed version.

Polmanová, Magda January 2016 (has links)
The thesis Framing of News Photography in the Czech Press on the Example of the Civil War in Libya explores the visual coverage of the conflict by Czech print media. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the theory of framing. It also focuses on the role of media in armed conflicts, visual behavior of media, the specifics of war photography and its framing. Furthermore the thesis explores the important relationship between image and text. The research draws on extensive literature on media framing as well as foreign research and combines quantitative and qualitative analysis. The practical part is based on the theory of Johan Galtung and his concepts of war and peace journalism, which can be seen as two competing frames. One of the first visual quantitative analysis to apply Galtung's theory was carried out by Shahira Fahmy and Rico Neumann. This study was used as a basis for the thesis. The aim of the research was to determine what visual frames are used to cover the war in the Czech press. Quantitative research focused on three sets of characteristics - picture position and sources, content and formal elements and framing. The most important part of the analysis was to determine the roles of the individuals in the images. The roles were essential for determining of the frames. The purpose...

"Lopota k životu posmrtnému" William Blake prorokem v moderním světě? / "A Drudgery Towards the Other Life" William Blake - a Prophet In Modern World?

KOPEČNÁ, Zuzana January 2011 (has links)
The thesis deals with life and particularly works of William Blake, one of the most prominent representatives of English poetry and art. His work stems from his dissatisfaction and resistance to religious and secular doctrines. He is known as an original poet, an engraver and a painter, a graphic artist and an illustrator, as well as a mystic and a visionary. In the midst of the birth of the modern world, during the War of Independence, the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, he considered his talent for design and his predispositions of the Old Testament prophets a direct inspiration for him and his prophetic mission. He identified with all types of oppression and enslavement of humanity and tried to gibbet them in his works. He mainly criticised repressed sexuality, which according to him leads to wars, industrialism and perverted science. The apocalyptic character of many of his works is closely related to the time in which he lived and worked. These are mainly so-called prophetic books, which he also printed, and in which he used synthesis of artistic means. Most of his life he spent in poverty and solitude, misunderstood and despised. This reassured him of his real prophetic destiny. Blake?s work became an inspiration for following generations of artists; but only the 20th century fully discovered him and understood the importance of his prophetic vision. Blake sees a redemptive power of the real art, which helps cleanse people?s inner eyes, and gives them the opportunity to be freed from enslaving forces.
