Consumption in life transition : How do unemployed consumers behave in the marketplace?

Sihvo, Cecilia, Mesanovic, Diana January 2010 (has links)
<p><strong>Background:</strong> We live in a world where not everyone is employed; numerous people havelost their jobs due to several factors where one of them is the economic crisis. This has hada huge impact on Sweden and the unemployment rate. Previous research has shown thatinflation, unemployment, and high interest rates represent risks to consumer welfare. We all consume daily, or on occasions, but how do unemployed consumers consume, what do they consume and why? In this area, the authors have found a knowledge gap in literature; therefore exploring this phenomenon is of interest.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Purpose:</strong> The purpose of this study is to explore and illustrate how consumers who have experienced a life transition, from employment to unemployment, are affected by this and how it has an impact on their consumption.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Method:</strong> This is an exploratory study performed with a qualitative and an abductive approach, where the authors used primary data collection through semi-structured in-depth interviews in Swedish with 16 unemployed consumers. These unemployed consumers were selected at Arbetsförmedlingen, the public employment service, in Jönköping.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Results:</strong> By living in unemployment the consumers have been affected psychologically, physically, financially and socially. Their identity has changed for each of them since they have to adapt to the new circumstances in their life. The new life situation has had an impact on the consumer’s well-being where depression, anxiety, and a feeling of being the underdog in the society is present. Their new life situation has implied a change in their consumption behavior since they nowadays have to prioritize the basic needs. Many of the respondents used explicit and implicit shopping-list in order to reduce their impulse buying. The contribution that the authors have done to the theory of resistance is a fourth category called ‘Everyday life resistance’ which explains the behavior of people who live in unemployment, i.e. they always have to think about resisting temptations, wants, desires, and avoiding situations where the result may be unnecessary consumption. The consumers in this study are highly involved in their consumption behavior, which the authors have chosen to call ‘reversed habitual decision making’. This kind of involvement is very high despite the high- or low risk category of the product. Their new life situation has made them more aware of product alternatives, market supply, prices, and also knowledge about their own resistance in the marketplace.</p> / <p><strong>Bakgrund:</strong> Vi lever i en värld där inte alla har en anställning, en omfattande andel av befolkningen har förlorat sitt jobb på grund av flera faktorer, där en av dem är den ekonomiska krisen.

Lineare und nichtlineare Analyse hochdynamischer Einschlagvorgänge mit Creo Simulate und Abaqus/Explicit / Linear and Nonlinear Analysis of High Dynamic Impact Events with Creo Simulate and Abaqus/Explicit

Jakel, Roland 23 June 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Dies wird mittels zweier kommerzieller FEM-Programme beschrieben: a.) / The presentation describes how to analyze the impact of an idealized fragment into a stell protective panel with different dynamic analysis methods. Two different commercial Finite Element codes are used for this: a.) Creo Simulate: This code uses the method of modal superposition for analyzing the dynamic response of linear dynamic systems. Therefore, only modal damping and no contact can be used. The unknown force-vs.-time curve of the impact event cannot be computed, but must be assumed and applied as external force to the steel protective panel. As more dynamic the impact, as sooner the range of validity of the underlying linear model is left. b.) Abaqus/Explicit: This code uses a direct integration method for an incremental (step by step) solution of the underlying differential equation, which does not need a tangential stiffness matrix. In this way, matieral nonlinearities as well as contact can be obtained as one result of the FEM analysis. Even for extremely high-dynamic impacts, good results can be obtained. But, the nonlinear elasto-plastic material behavior with damage initiation and damage evolution must be characterized with a lot of effort. The principal difficulties of the material characterization are described.

Σχεδίαση και ανάπτυξη ολοκληρωμένων κυκλωμάτων για συστήματα υπερευρείας ζώνης με έμφαση στα κυκλώματα του πομπού / Design and development of integrated circuits for ultra wideband systems, with emphasis on the transmitter circuits

Παπαμιχαήλ, Μιχαήλ 14 May 2012 (has links)
The multitude of applications that Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology can serve, from high-speed Wireless Personal Area Networks, to Wireless Sensor Networks with precision Geolocation abilities, and Wireless Medical Networks, has attracted intense research interest in the implementation of UWB systems. The unusually wide range of frequencies assigned to UWB, from 3.1-10.6 GHz, allows UWB systems employing low order modulation schemes to enjoy high throughput at low power consumption. However, since UWB shares the spectrum with existing wireless networking technologies, UWB emissions must be limited to a power spectral density below the threshold of -41.3 dBm/MHz, satisfying very stringent emission masks and introducing great challenges in the design of UWB transmitters. The subject of this thesis is the design of low power, fully integrated, reconfigurable CMOS UWB transmitters, with high spectral flexibility, high speed and high modulation quality. Adopting the Multi-Band Impulse-Radio architecture, in conjunction with the Direct Sequence BPSK modulation, the research focused on the development of a baseband unit, able to precisely invert Gaussian shaped, subnanosecond pulses. The key contributions of this thesis are a CMOS Gaussian Pulse Generator and a BSPK modulation topology, which jointly constitute the proposed baseband unit. The Pulse Generator (PG) is based on non-linear shaping, so as to facilitate the configurability of the output pulse duration, and exploits the voltage transfer characteristic of a Resistive Loaded Asymmetrical CMOS Inverter, which results in spectral sidelobes typically better than -40 dB. The PG incorporates mostly-digital low voltage circuits, while the MOSFET devices that undertake the pulse shaping avoid exclusive operation in weak inversion, in contrast to previous implementations. Consequently, the proposed CMOS PG is able to support higher throughput, as well as higher output amplitude, which relaxes considerably the design of the RF front end. This thesis presents a systematic design procedure and a scaling analysis of the non-linear pulse shaper. Moreover, in order to further increase the speed, a special PRF boost technique is proposed, which trades off speed and spectral efficiency for the spectral sidelobes level. Regarding the BPSK modulator, this work introduces the “Trigger Switching Fully Balanced Up-Conversion” topology, which avoids the use of power-hungry and distortion-prone analog circuits for the accurate inversion of the subnanosecond shaped pulses, as well as avoids the application of analog waveform switching to the baseband pulses, since the baseband modulation takes place before the generation of the pulses. The digital nature of the switching lends itself to high data rates, while the balanced paths of the topology ensure high modulation quality with minimal design effort. Wafer probing measurements confirmed the high performance of the baseband unit. The functionality of the transmitter was completed by the development of an RF front end which consists of a double balanced mixer, an LO buffer, a differential to single-ended (DtoSE) converter, and a power amplifier which is ready to drive a 50 Ohms load without requiring any off-chip components. The integrated transmitter, which incorporates the proposed baseband unit and the RF front end, was fabricated in 130 nm CMOS technology. The transmitter RFIC was directly attached to the system RF PCB using the Chip-on-Board packaging option. The First-Pass success of the system was ensured by paying particular attention to Signal/Power Integrity issues and following an IC-Package-PCB co-design procedure. The transmitter was measured up to 1.5 Gbps, which, to the author’s knowledge, was the highest speed amongst the competitive Multi-Band Impulse-Radio UWB implementations in the literature. The corresponding energy efficiency was 21 pJoule/bit and the Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) 5.5%, while the proposed transmitter improved the spectral sidelobes by over 10 dB. Exploiting the reconfigurability of the transmitter, this thesis presents the first measurements at multi-Mbps speeds that completely meet the final version of the European spectrum emission mask.

Analýza ztrát v železe malého asynchronního motoru / Analysis of core loss of a small induction machine

Plíšek, Oldřich January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this master´s thesis is to analyze core losses of a small induction motor. Analyzed values are obtained from laboratory measurements, software analysis and 2D finite element method simulation. The theoretical part of this thesis consists of two parts. The analysis of the higher spatial harmonics presents in the induction motor and the analysis of core losses of the motor. Practical part consists of laboratory measurements according to ČSN. Measured values are used to calculate individual losses. The next part consists of creating a model for software analysis (Maxwell RMxprt). The generated model is converted into a 2D simulation environment (Maxwell 2D), where it is adapted to obtain values from the examined parts (rotor and stator teeth and rotor cage). Results of simulations at different loads are compared and analyzed from the point of view of higher harmonics.

A transdisciplinary approach to dealing with child offenders with psychiatric disorders

Geoffrey, Leandre Christina 12 1900 (has links)
This study aimed to develop a framework for improved legislation, methods of practice and services used to meet the best interest of child offenders with psychiatric disorders within the South African child justice system. This aim was achieved via a qualitative study, which evaluated child justice and mental health legislation, methods of practice, role-players, and services in South Africa, and compared same to those in Namibia, Botswana, and Nigeria; to establish if the best interest of child offenders with psychiatric disorders are currently met from a South African perspective. Data collection occurred in two phases: a document analysis of legislation, policies, and procedures in the selected comparative jurisdictions; followed by semi-structured interviews with child justice and mental health experts. During phase one the researcher analysed child justice and mental health legislation, human rights protections, and policy related to child justice in Nigeria, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. In addition, she interrogated literature relating to child justice and mental health, in comparative jurisdictions. This phase formed the foundation for the semi-structured interview schedule. Purposive and theoretical sampling was used to conduct 24 semi-structured interviews. Data was analysed and interpreted using pure qualitative document and thematic analysis. The overarching findings indicate that the best interest of child offenders with psychiatric disorders, in the South African child justice system, are unprotected. This vulnerable group is not dealt with from an individualised, case-specific, multi-disciplinary perspective; informed by legislation, practice-policy, and a service-orientated approach. Further, certain domestic legislation and methods of practice are inadequate in holistically assessing a child who comes into conflict with the law in the jurisdictions of comparison. Further findings identified that biological, psychological, environmental, cultural, and social factors influence the development of psychiatric disorders in children, which may bring them into conflict with the law. This study further confirmed that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Intellectual Development Disorder, Learning Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Conduct Disorder are prevalent in children who iv come into conflict with the law. Further, substance abuse disorder, depression and attachment disorder were identified as predominant factors affecting children who come into conflict with the law. The influence of these factors, in conjunction with biological, psychological, environmental, cultural, and social factors, were found to predispose children to psychiatric disorders linked to criminal behaviour. Thus, to meet the best interest standard; children in conflict with the law must be dealt with using a multi-factorial approach which considers biological, environmental, social, cultural, and psychological factors. In this way, the behaviour of child offenders with psychiatric disorders will be addressed holistically in a manner that considers all factors influencing behaviour. The empirical data supported the recommendations used to develop a trans-disciplinary framework for child offenders with psychiatric disorders. / Olu phononongo lwesi sifundo lujolise ekuphuhliseni isakhelo somthetho ophuculiweyo, iindlela zokusebenza kunye neenkonzo ukwenzela ukunikezela ezona zilungileyo iimfuno zabantwana abangabaphuli-mthetho benengulo yesifo sengqondo kwinkqubo yobulungisa yabantwana eMzantsi Afrika. Conditional Truths: Remapping Paths To Documentary 'Independence'

Lang, Ian William, n/a January 2003 (has links)
(Synopsis to introductory statement): An introductory statement to five documentary films made by Ian Lang in Australia between 1981 and 1997 exemplifying  a 'democratising' model of sustainable and ethical documentary film production. This document critically reflects on the production process of these films to accompany their submission for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Publication at Griffith University. It finds that a contemporary tendency towards 'post-industrial' conditions allows an observational film-maker to negotiate a critical inter-dependence rather than a romantically conceived 'independence' traditional to the genre. [Full thesis consists of introductory statement plus six DVD videodiscs.]
