Aging and Early Life Stress: Telomerase Dynamics and The Consequences for Telomeres in a Wild Bird

Vangorder-Braid, Jennifer Teresa January 2020 (has links)
Aging is an underlying risk factor for many major diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegeneration. Yet we still do not know the full extent of how our bodies age and what determines our lifespan. One mechanism that may play an important role are telomeres, which are protective caps at the end of chromosomes. Telomeres are directly linked to longevity and can be lengthened by the enzyme telomerase. Early life telomere length is critical for lifespan, but we do not know how telomerase performs during this period. Whether variation in telomerase levels can influence telomere length and loss during development with consequences to longevity is still unknown. This thesis focuses on the role of telomerase during post-natal development and its response to stressors and activators with effects on telomeres. Taken together this research enhances our understanding of how telomerase acts and influences telomere during post-natal development.

Optimalizace tvaru a následné ověření pevnosti dřevo-slámových panelů / Shape optimization and subsequent verification of the strength of wood-straw panels

Škrachová, Ivana January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis focuses on shape optimization and then on determining of strength of straw bane panels. The thesis aims to maximize the load-bearing capacity of the panels and using static calculation and laboratory testing to prove usability of panels in construction of buildings. From the acquired maximal load values for each panel the technical data sheets were created. Values in the technical data sheets were evaluated on FEM model of a simple house. The model proved applicability and reliability of straw bane panels in construction of buildings.

OBYTNÝ PŘÍVĚS / CARAVAN

Balková, Natálie January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with possible layout plan of a camper van and considers different possibilities of its utilization and tries to find the best possible ways of comfortable living on roads. The goal of the thesis is to show meaningful ways of connecting the sanitary, living and sleeping zone to achieve ideal balance among those. When living in the cramped space of the camper van, the goal is to provide ergonomic environment without any obstacles caused by poor design of the interior. The thesis shows the layout plan that would comply with comfort both on short trips and also on longer tours. Important thing is to deal with the design of windows to utilize the possibilies of using the natural daylight as a source of lighting. Larger windows would also contribute to a better connection with van’s surroundings. The outcome of the thesis is visualisation of 3D model, architectural study showing possible layouts, physical model and additional visualisations.

Children’s agency in reducing poverty and environmental risk : case study of Lerato house, Tshwane Leadership Foundation

Crouse, Simone January 2021 (has links)
South-Africa’s government has adopted several global, national, and regional developmental agendas to combat systemic inequalities in the country. The developmental agendas should consider the role of children’s agency in reducing poverty and environmental risks. South Africa ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child (UNCRC) and the African Charter on the Rights and the Welfare of the Child (ARCWC) and is therefore bound through international treaties to protect and promote children’s rights (Hall, Richter, Mokomane & Lake, 2018:48). The goal of the study was to explore and describe how children’s agency is recognised and respected in programmes/interventions aimed at reducing poverty and environmental risk in the case study of Lerato House, Tshwane Leadership Foundation. The researcher used a qualitative research approach, and the type of research was applied. The research design was a case study, and a purposive sampling method was used to sample five child participants and five key informants from Lerato House. Data was collected through one-on-one semi-structured interviews. The findings show that children’s agency is recognised and respected in the planning and implementation phases of the programme, while there is a lack of children’s participation in the conceptualisation phase and little participation in the monitoring and evaluation phase. The study concludes that children’s agency was more likely to be recognised and respected when staff have been trained to work with children and when children were allowed to provide their input into programmes. The study recommends that children’s agency be recognised and developed by preparing and allowing them to participate in all the phases of programmes at Lerato House aimed at reducing poverty and environmental risks. / Mini Dissertation (MSW (Social Development and Policy))--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Social Work and Criminology / MSW (Social Dev and Policy) / Unrestricted

Polyfunkční dům / Polyfunctional building

Chocholouš, Lukáš January 2013 (has links)
In Master´s thesis I evolved a projected documentation of newly designed building ofthe polyfunctional house. The project is completed as a professional docummentation for the planning permission. This suggested conception respects valid standards and announcements (organization of the stability and area, orientation to cardinal points, fire safety of the building, noise protection, energy saving demands etc).

Vliv investice do stavebních úprav na zhodnocení standardního rodinného domu / The Influence of Investment into Construction Alterations on the Valuation of a Standard Family House

Slamená, Iveta January 2011 (has links)
The master's thesis deals with determining the influence of investment intro construction alterations on the valuation of a standard family house. Quantifying the cost of investment into the construction budget adjustments and valuation of a standard family house a home's value difference before and after completion of building alterations. Calculated data on the amount of investment and valuation of a standard family house to compare and evaluate in what time period, age structure and in what kind of investment in construction to occur by similar adjustments to the assessment.

Phenomenology of Home

Angelova, Lidiya 24 March 2010 (has links)
The intent of this Master's Thesis project is to investigate the meaning of home through the bodily experience and psychological perception of space. An inherent ambiguity to the word, as it fails to translate in languages other than those of the Germanic group, causes confusion in defining what home is. In English the word home suggests a deeper understanding and attachment to the surrounding environment, a sort of fusing of the spatial, time and material elements into a single intense experience of being. In languages that do not contain the word the notion of home is expressed in poetry through the idea of the journey from and to a point of origin and through the symbol of the fireplace. The project uses these ideas pertaining to home in an effort to understand how we form our place in the world.

Housing supply and the level of house prices : An outlook on the greater Stockholm region real estate market

Teklay, Filmon January 2012 (has links)
The Swedish housing market has experienced an almost constant increase of housing prices since the economic crisis in the early 90‟s. Many studies have been conducted on the field which have tried to find an explanation to the constant trend and if there is an end in sight. However, this study aims at focusing on the supply/demand relationship in determining the housing prices in the County of Stockholm. The method that was used was both a time series regression and a cross sectional regression, by applying data on the amount of housing that has been constructed per thousand inhabitants in each municipality, the development of housing prices in each municipality and the average annual development of wages. Since there are 26 municipalities in Stockholm County, it would be too time consuming to go through each and every single one of the municipalities, instead the focus was on the 5 municipalities with the highest and lowest construction rate per thousand inhabitants. Thus, we can observe if there is any general difference depending on the construction rate in determining the house price development. The results on the time series regression implies that most of the municipalities housing prices are primarily dependent on the housing construction rate, when construction goes down the prices goes up and vice versa. However, the municipality of Vallentuna had suspicious signs which imply that other factors (then the variables used) are driving the prices up. In the cross sectional regression where both the 5 highest and lowest municipalities with construction rate were regressed together, we can see similar signs as in Vallentuna. It would therefore be interesting to find out what the underlying factors that are driving the prices up in the case of Vallentuna and in the cross sectional analysis.
