Design and implementation of remotely controlled laboratory experimentsHyder, Andrew Charles 08 April 2010 (has links)
Laboratory experimentation plays a critical role in the education of engineers. With the increase of students choosing to obtain their education online through Distance Learning programs, something must be done to allow them to gain practice with experimental techniques. Remote Laboratories (RLs), or laboratory experiments specially constructed for remote use, have the potential to fill this void.
In a "traditional" laboratory experiment, students physically interact with an apparatus to obtain experimental data. Remote Laboratories are meant to offer a similar learning experience that is equivalent to, or as close as possible to the physical one, by allowing a user to control the apparatus from a remote location using mechatronic control hardware, integrated with data acquisition software. Studies have shown there is no significant difference with regard to meeting educational outcomes between students who performed an experiment remotely versus those who carried out the same experiment in-person.
The focus of this thesis is on the development of a framework for developing and implementing Remote Laboratories. To do this, this research introduces advances in the following areas:
a) Identifying the educational differences between traditional and Remote Laboratories.
b) Developing a method for comparing student perceptions about RLs and their laboratory reports through surveys and laboratory report grading.
c) Creating a standard Information Technology protocol for hosting and conducting remote experiments.
d) Investigating alternative uses for RLs.
e) Proposing new methods to best mimic the physical interactions of traditional laboratories.
f) Creation of functioning Remote Laboratories.
g) Analyzing the findings of their use in a classroom setting.
A comparison of surveys and laboratory reports between groups that conducted remote experiments and those which conducted traditional experiments over a period of 4 semesters suggest that RLs have the potential to be used to achieve the same educational outcomes as traditional laboratories.

COSINE: A tool for constraining spatial neighbourhoods in marine environmentsSuarez, Cesar Augusto 20 September 2013 (has links)
Spatial analysis methods used for detecting, interpolating or predicting local patterns require a delineation of a neighbourhood defining the extent of spatial interaction in geographic data. The most common neighbourhood delineation techniques include fixed distance bands, k-nearest neighbours, or spatial adjacency (contiguity) matrices optimized to represent spatial dependency in data. However, these standard approaches do not take into consideration the geographic or environmental constraints such as impassable mountain ranges, road networks or coastline barriers. Specifically, complex marine landscapes and coastlines present common problematic neighbourhood definitions for standard neighbourhood matrices used in the spatial analysis of marine environments. Therefore, the goal of our research is to present a new approach to constraining spatial neighbourhoods when conducting geographical analysis in marine environments. To meet this goal, we developed methods and software (COnstraining SpatIal NEighbourhoods - COSINE) for modifying spatial neighbourhoods, and demonstrate their utility in two case studies. Our method enables delineation of neighbourhoods that are constrained by coastlines and the direction of marine currents. Our software calculates and evaluates whether neighbouring features are separated by land, or are within a user defined angle that excludes interaction based on directional processes. Using decision rules a modified spatial weight matrix is created, either in binary or row-standardized format. Within open source software (R), a graphical user interface enables users to modify the standard spatial neighbourhood definition distance, inverse distance and k-nearest neighbour. Two case studies are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the new approach for detecting spatial patterns: the first case study observes marine mammals’ abundance and the second, oil spill observation. Our results indicate that constraining spatial neighbourhoods in marine environments is particularly important at larger spatial scales. Fast and Approximate Text Rendering Using Distance FieldsAdamsson, Gustav January 2015 (has links)
Distance field text rendering has many advantages compared to most other text renderingsolutions. Two of the advantages are the possibility to scale the glyphs without losing the crisp edge and less memory consumption. A drawback with distance field text renderingcan be high distance field generation time. The solution for fast distance field text renderingin this thesis generates the distance fields by drawing distance gradients locally over the outlines of the glyphs. This method is much faster than the old exact methods for generating distance fields that often includes multiple passes over the whole image. Using the solution for text rendering proposed in this thesis results in good looking text that is generated on the fly. The distance fields are generated on a mobile device in less than 10 ms for most of the glyphs in good quality which is less than the time between two frames.

An Investigation into Motivations of Instructors Teaching Business and Technical Internet-Based Courses at Two-Year CollegesSwartwout, Nansi. A. 12 1900 (has links)
This research was conducted to determine why two-year community college instructors teach over the Internet. By understanding why these instructors teach over the Internet, colleges can recruit more instructors to teach using the Web thus allowing colleges to offer more Internet courses. They can also use the information to keep the instructors who are currently teaching over the Internet satisfied, and motivate them to continue to teach. To gather this information, a questionnaire was created and evaluated for reliability and validity during a pilot study. It was then sent to those instructors who taught over the Internet, and had their e-mails available on their campus Website. A 30.5% response rate (N=100) was achieved. The survey was divided into two sections, a demographics section and a Likert scale dealing with motivation. The Likert scale had six choices ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree and 31 statements. The demographic data were reported and summarized. The Likert items were examined using factor analysis techniques, and a number of components were discovered. Eight components, made up of the 31 variables from the Likert scale were found using the factor analysis. The eight components in order are labeled: Technical and Computer Challenges, School Promotion, Student Preferences, Personal Benefits, Receiving Computerized Assistance, Growth and Knowledge, Textbook Company Assistance, and Pay.

Student Perceptions of Quality Online InstructionMoorehead, Tamika Kutrice 04 May 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine students’ perceptions of quality of online courses as they relate to the IHEP Teaching/Learning Process Benchmarks, Course Structure Benchmarks, and Student Support Benchmarks. The research design for this study was correlational. Out of 3,310 students enrolled in online courses, 97 successfully participated in the study at an urban southeastern university. A survey instrument consisting of three parts was used in this study. Part I of the survey instrument contains 24 Likert Scale questions, examining students’ online learning experiences. Part II of the survey contained four Likert Scale questions, gathering students’ rating on the overall quality of the online course in which they were enrolled. Part III of the survey instrument sought to obtain demographic information from the participants. The research questions were designed to determine students’ perceptions of online course quality distance education and whether a relationship exists between online students’ perception of quality and the operational variables: peer interaction, instructor feedback, course structure, and student support services. Pearson’s r correlation was used to analyze the survey data. After the data were collected and analyzed, the researcher determined that peer interactions, feedback from the instructors, and course structure contribute to predicting students’ perceptions of online course quality in the online courses studied. Students rated the quality of online teaching, online learning and course structure above average to excellent. Students’ perceptions of the quality of student support services were rated the lowest. An examination of the relationship between student perception of course quality and, instructor feedback, peer interaction, course structure, and student support services was also conducted. The results of the examination indicated that moderately statistically significant relationships existed between student perceptions of course quality and each of the three variables. Conclusions and recommendations based on the findings in this study indicated peer interaction, instructor feedback course structures, and student support services contribute to students’ perceptions of online course quality.

Cette étude porte sur la distance parcourue pour commettre un crime à Gatineau en 2006. Peu d’études canadiennes récentes ont porté sur le sujet. De plus, il existe un vide de connaissances sur la mobilité des délinquants dans les petites villes et les banlieues. La présente recherche vise à comparer trois mesures de distance différentes, à vérifier si la distance parcourue varie en fonction du type de crime et à voir si les variables de temps (jour de la semaine, moment de la journée et saison) de même que certaines caractéristiques des suspects (âge, sexe et lieu de résidence) ont un impact sur la distance parcourue. Pour chaque crime, l’adresse du suspect et le lieu du crime ont été géocodées pour ensuite calculer la distance entre les deux points. Il ressort de l’analyse de la forme des courbes de distances que seules les agressions sexuelles présentent une zone tampon. Les résultats des analyses statistiques indiquent que les jeunes sont plus mobiles que les suspects plus âgés et que les hommes parcourent une distance plus élevée que les femmes. Étonnement, la distance parcourue ne diffère pas significativement selon la saison et le moment de la journée. Enfin, comparativement aux autres criminels, les délinquants qui ont commis un vol qualifié sont ceux qui ont parcouru les plus grandes distances. / This study focuses on the journey to crime of the offenders who have committed a crime in Gatineau in 2006. There are only a few recent Canadian studies on the subject. In addition there is a vacuum of knowledge on the journey to crime in smaller cities and suburbs. This research is designed to compare three different measures of distance, to check if the distance varies depending on the type of crime and see if the variables of time (day of week, time of day and season) as well as some characteristics of suspects (age, sex and place of residence) have an impact on the distance traveled. For each crime, the address of the suspect and the crime location were geocoded then, the distance between the two points was calculated. An analysis of the shapes curves pattern of the distances indicates that sexual assault is the only type of crime which possesses a buffer zone. The results of statistical analysis show that young people are more mobile than older suspects and that men travel a greater distance than women. Surprisingly, the distance does not differ significantly according to season and time of day. Finally, compared to the other criminal offenders, those who have committed a robbery traveled the greatest distances.

<p>This thesis shows the result from investigations of methods that use distance vectors when matching pictures. The distance vectors are available in a distance map made by the Euclidean Distance Transform. The investigated methods use the two characteristic features of the distance vector when matching pictures, length and direction. The length of the vector is used to calculate a value of how good a match is and the direction of the vector is used to predict a transformation to get a better match. The results shows that the number of calculation steps that are used during a search can be reduced compared to matching methods that only uses the distance during the matching.</p>
